7 Charming, Small Wine Towns in California to Visit - AFAR

"An industrial complex south of downtown Paso Robles, Tin City houses more than two dozen small tasting rooms, three breweries, two distilleries, and several restaurants; it functions as a permanent hub for the kinds of small producers who first appeared at the Garagiste Wine Festival." - Justin Goldman

Great place for families and friends. Waterfall outside. They have an amphitheater and concerts. Large selection of great beer. The food truck is amazing. We got the "Boots &Spurs Smash Burger " American cheese, pickled jalapeños, BBQ sauce, with onion rings on it, and chopped bacon bits. Must try. They have a large menu to try and we'll be back.

Tin City is a collection of Many places - wineries, wine tasting rooms, distilleries, eateries and a brewery! There is some very good wine here. It gets Packed on weekends.

So glad I finally got to visit Tin City on a Sunday morning/afternoon in July. We were driving back to Fresno from Cayucos and decided to do one Paso wine stop and Tin City seemed like the best bet since we didn’t have reservations. We walked around the area seeing what was available and at a few mins till 11am it was pretty quiet but a few places seemed open and ready for business. We saw a “wine tasting walk ins welcome sign” and ended up at the most friendly, chill, and delicious tasting room for La Perdignus Wine. There’s so many places I want to check out next time I get to Tin City. We learned from another tasting room employee that the Tin City website is not updated so it’s best to go to each business’ website to confirm. For example, Fableist wines is listed on the Tin City website but they are no longer at Tin City. I’d love to plan a trip back here and line up reservations ahead of time. All in all such a cool place and awesome concept.

Google
Everything was good, but the single malt, as well as lemonade and passionfruit/orange/guava cocktails were our favorites. Delicious. While we were there, a local was picking up her big weekly flat of lemonade seltzer. We may need to grab a flat next time we are in town.

Google
Nice slow easy paced area. Many choices for a meal and a great spot to try micro breweries. There is one particular spot, Tin City Cider which I really enjoyed. Since I had never tried it, I ordered a flight of ciders and then ordered a glass of what I enjoyed. The ciders were nothing like what you buy at stores such as "Stella Cider". I guess what I'm trying to say is, there not as sweet and much more flavor...

Google
this is a great place with tons of places with restaurants shops, wine tasting, brewery, ice cream. The construction is all in tin like containers. not too far from downtown Pass Robles and a must visit!

Steven E.

Google
Tin City is definitely a playground for adults who like to drink, eat, and socialize. Not much else is going on in Tin City other than a couple of establishments that provide fun games like Corn Hole and Match Four. More restaurants would be a welcome addition, as well.

William B.

Google
You could spend your entire day here. In the several buildings there is all you need by way of food and drink (wine and beer). Plenty of parking in nearby lots.

Yelp
Tin City is a small collection of breweries, a distillery, and a winery (I believe). I originally thought it would be a lot bigger with more breweries to check out, but after exploring this time around, I was a bit disappointed. It definitely has potential though -- if it grows, it could be such a fun spot for visitors to hop around and explore. Overall, still nice to have experienced it!

Yelp
We saw the documentary on Netflix and were already planning a trip to Paso. Put Tin City at the top of our list! Parking was easy ( it was a Thursday) Had fun walking around, the Italian place was super cute! Loved the brewery! Everyone was friendly ice cold beers & great micro brews. Their smash burger & fries .... So tastee! Nix winery was fun and friendly. The distillery was interesting. Our server didn't seem like he wanted to help us, but wanted to hang out with the group of regulars. Made us not really want to buy a bottle. Can't wait to go back to the brewery especially for some live music! Oh all the places are pet friendly!

Yelp
Fun place with many choices for food and drinks. Lots of outdoor spaces for gatherings of all sizes.

Yelp
Quality/Quantity - Approximately 40 businesses. But really known for the wineries, wine tasting rooms, distillery, breweries, eateries, pop-ups, etc. See picture of directory, website, etc. My favorite place to visit is the Barrel House Brewing Co.; see other review. Atmosphere - Cool hip place to visit. A must visit when in the area. Service - Good, sales driven. Price - Fair, slightly above average, but you are paying for the atmosphere. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since the 1920's. Thanks for keeping up with the times. This is a fun area to visit.

Yelp
What a neat place! Surprised to only discover this after many years of visiting here annually! Collection of around 25-30 wineries and other small businesses in what used to be a tire factory? We visited several days in a row checking out the restaurants, small shops (cheese, bread, pastas) and many wineries. Was not crowded at all on the weekdays that we visited and finding parking was no problem. Only thing missing is that their website shows there is EV charging and even Google maps shows 2-3 chargers in the vicinity but we could not locate and the 1 unit we found seemed like we were trespassing into a businesses' garage!

Yelp
Had always gone to the brewery across the street and had missed out on this hidden Gem as we were always there too early. Finally got the opportunity to come here during a vacation last year and has become a regular destination. First off join the bootlegger club. A couple of weeks we got to attend their appreciation event and they do a really nice event for members. The bbq was top notch. The staff here is what sets this place apart. They really help with finding you the right drink. They turned me onto drink I never imagined I would like such as their Fig Brandy and Chocolate Vodka. I really love their old fashioned. If you want excellent service and a nice adult beverage it's worth a stop!

Yelp
Tin City was very cool! It was super cute and very fun. All walkable with a TON of wineries and breweries all next to each other. Some places have food and some don't, but there's definitely enough food in the area to stop in somewhere whenever you're hungry.
google avatar

Yelp
Tin City is an absolute must visit when in the Paso Robles area. There's a documentary on Tin City on Amazon Prime which is worth a watch after visiting. The area is a gathering of large Tin buildings housing: Wineries, Breweries and local food joints. This Tin City visit consisted of stops at: Benom Wine - See Yelp review =) Aaron Wine - See Yelp review =) Negranti Creamery - impromptu visit. The service was quick and friendly for a mid afternoon Ice Cream treat. We strolled around to peep out future places to visit. We'll focus on breweries and ciders on the next one. Cheers!

Yelp
A hidden city in Paso Robles or maybe not that hidden but definitely a place from the outside looks ordinary! Good spots Tried Barrelhouse and Negranti Creamery
google avatar

Bre R.

Yelp
We didn't care for the warehouse vibe but that's our fault. We expected something different. Didn't care for the atmosphere ( not cozy) hard to find parking, not a cute place. Flip side is you can try lots of wine, cheese, creameries with some walking. If that's your thing. Service was friendly & good most places.
google avatar

Traci R.

Yelp
Tin City is always good for some beers & ciders @ Barrelhouse Brewing & Tin City Cider! There is always a new spot popping up!

Charlie S.

Yelp
Great wine.. Great people Service is great and love hearing all about there winery and wine maker. Great price range also!

Yelp
Jamie W. and I were tooling down to Paso Robles to see the Sensorio light display that evening. We had a lot of time to kill, and we discovered that unless you're a world-class wino, there wasn't that much to do unless you want to go to the coast or head to SLO. So that's how we ended up in Tin City. It's described on their website as an "evolving industrial makers market nestled amongst the oaks where friends, adventurers, and aficionados come together to partake in craft wine, beer and spirits". I'm not sure what that means, but I assumed that a bunch of people get drunk and what evolves is their lack of sobriety. When we arrived, it did look like an industrial park without an obvious parking lot. That wasn't a problem since there was plenty of street parking. It was desolate at 2PM. We walked around the buildings which had tasting rooms but no customers. We aren't connoisseurs, so ended up at Tin City Cider (review: https://bit.ly/3iETTDB). Not wine and not bad. Just hard cider and short of a buzz. We made our way to Negranti Creamery, and their artisan ice cream was likely the high point. (review: https://bit.ly/3ZH5LFl). Speaking of which, we didn't see that much we would consider family-friendly. Maybe the outdoor beer garden at Barrelhouse, but there was still beer. RELATED - Exploring California's Central Coast? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://bit.ly/3zSyudU

Yelp
Very cool place with lots to see and do, but food, beer and spirits oriented. Lots of breweries, few distlleries, olive oil, ice cream in a neat location. But be prepared to walk as its spread over a large area. Well worth a visit.

Yelp
I have been to tin city twice. The first time was with a big group of friends for a birthday event. The environment was highly social, there were lots of games to play and we took lots of great photos. I liked that the space was both Indoor and Outdoor. The second time I went, I went by myself. During the day, the location is really enjoyable for a casual walk. I found some of the locations to be difficult to find and parking was tight. I still could not find the pasta, so I settled for a hotdog and I thought that it was mediocre to pour quality but expensive. I really enjoyed the service that I received at the ice cream bar. They had a vegan flavor available and I was able to take my leftovers to go. I noticed that a lot of the locations were meant to be family friendly. I thought it was kind of a weird combination, considering the space is mostly tasting rooms for wine and cider. However, there was signage posted to make sure that the children behaved.

Yelp
Tin City is one of the hottest new, up and coming places in Paso Robles. It's located in an industrial center with over 20 wineries, craft beer, cider, and local food produced in SLO County. You can find local food trucks at BarrelHouse Brewing Co and Tin City Cider. Almost all the tasting rooms are converted shipping containers or warehouses, giving it a fun and unique experience as you walk through the man-made "tin" city to visit the various vendors. Since the reopening post-COVID, most places are reservation only with some exceptions for walk-ins. There are a lot of different places to see and it can get a little overwhelming, so plan to spend a few days at Tin City alone if you're trying to hit every spot. Places to Visit: ONX, Nicora, Jacob Toft, Desparada, BarrelHouse Brewing Co, Tin City Cider Co, Negranti Creamery

Yelp
What a neat concept! Wine? Beer? Craft Oils, Vinegars and Ciders? A place to chill on an unassuming day. A place to host a party. A place to learn of the MANY new wineries and wine producers in the Paso region. A Place! A Place! There are at least 40 entities housed in the Tin City Block. I'm guessing it's been named Tin City because most of the structures are made with tin sidings. Please know there are eateries (McPhea's and Negranti for starters) and the brewery with snacks and a pretzel place and much more. I would suggest you go in the early spring or autumn when the weather is more conducive to strolling and grazing. I can imagine in the triple digit degree days, it might be a bit overwhelming. Located between the City of Paso Robles and Atascadero off Hwy 101

Brian S.

Yelp
I was told about this from a friend & was wowed at all the places; breweries, a creamery, winery etc. We enjoyed Barrel House Brewing & the food truck there (see my review) & Friends With Benifits Brewing. This review is for Friends With Benifits which brews cider & serves beer from a few third party colligues. I had an oatmeel staut & my aunt & uncle a Mexican logger & blond respectively. My mother enjoyed her cider. The bartender was very friendly & answered our questions; we got to try samples before ordering which is always a plus. It is a decent size shop with a couple bars & some tables to sit at. I will definitely be back next time I am in town. So, for great beer & cider with friendly service in a friendly casual atmosphere, Friends With Benifits cannot be beat. Keep up the good work guys.

Yelp
I suppose this would be a great place if you're into wine or beer. We found ourselves here while visiting Paso Robles and had some time to waste before lunch on a Monday. The ambiance is nice, as is the architecture. It was a nice walk around the "loop" before the restaurant opened for lunch. I respect what they did with the place and imagine it would really hopping (pun intended) on a Friday night -- though I cannot imagine where everyone would park. But coming here before lunch was a bit of a disappointment. Outside of beer and wine, there was an olive oil place, an ice cream place that was closed, and I think that was it except for Etto (our lunch). I would have loved to see more interesting shops (maybe a cheese place or bakery), something interactive, whatever.

Jolie O.

Yelp
Absolutely LOVE going to the barrel house brewing company! It is such a great little area to hang out with friends and grab a few drinks. I wish there was maybe ONE more food truck, but really enjoy that spot. Additionally, the ice cream spot is cute. Not a big fan of ETTO, the food isn't great- but there are MANY other spots here that make it a great way to spend the weekend with friends and family. Barrelhouse also has live music and different events, if you go I'd suggest to stop there!

F O.

Yelp
Mist stores are closed Monday and Tuesday so check date and hours of operation before you go.

Yelp
On our way home from Avila last week, we stopped at Tin City. Had oil and vinegar tasting at Olivas de Oro. Casey was so knowledgeable and paired some delicious combinations of their products. So we ended up up joining their club membership!

Yelp
This is a must when you are in Paso Robles. Many breweries to choose from. Homemade Ice cream shop and food available. Everything is walking distance from each other in this area. my favorite local brewery, BarrelHouse Brewing Co. is there and the grounds are pretty great! Love the big rooster running around welcoming guests as they eat. Really enjoyed the homemade pasta & deli shop and look forward to checking out the new restaurant next door that will carry some of their homemade pasta and sauces. Will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Where can you find wine tasting rooms, breweries and a distillery all in one place? Tin City offers all of the above plus a few restaurants and an ice cream shop. Just park within the area and walk to the different places. We spent an afternoon there and found it very convenient to get tasters and food. Tin City is definitely family friendly with lots of parents pushing strollers. There were a couple of bachelorette parties there too. While most establishments were open, some were open by appointment only. You may want to check the hours of each on their own website beforehand. Some highlights include: - Tin City Cider: various flavor combos of ciders. Cans and liters are available for purchase and the Honest juice boxes are free for the kids! - McPhee's Canteen: good place to grab some food. Great customer service and we enjoyed eating near the waterfall in their courtyard. - Wine Shine / Tin City Distillery: There are a variety of cocktails you can get along with some tasters, but only one cocktail or one flight per person.

Yelp
Unless you want a specific beer/wine vendor or try something new...nothing much else. Not all vendors are open so you may need to drive around to see what's open. No food restaurants.
google avatar

Army P.

Yelp
North Templeton is a strange place to have an eatery of this caliber, but here we are. Cool layout, friendly and helpful staff, BOMB pasta. House red was excellent, too. If you're too lazy to drive to Flour House in SLO for their pasta then this place will do the trick.
google avatar

K M.

Yelp
Friendly excellent service and variety of ciders to try. So fun!! Recommend going there on a nice warm sunny day.
google avatar

Brian P.

Yelp
Cool area consisting of dozens of wine tasting rooms, some breweries, Tin City Cider, Olivas de Oro olive oil shop, Negranti ice cream (which carries sheep's and cow's milk ice cream), and probably more that I didn't get to see! Our only complaint is that it's so popular, parking was difficult to find today since it was Saturday afternoon! I'd recommend coming early and staying a while!
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
We enjoy stopping by Tin City when we go over to the central coast. Whether it's for having lunch, ice cream, a beer or stout, some wine, olive oil tasting or spirits it's worth the stop! All the staff is usually friendly and informative, great customer service. Tin City is family friendly and always delightful ambiance.
google avatar

Briana K.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Breweries, wineries, food, it's pretty much got it all. The brewery had a big outdoor area and was perfect for families or just drinking with an outside atmosphere. We kept reading online that it closed at 530, but there were still some things open. All the wineries were closed (Sunday at 5), but I think all else was open until 7. We ate at the food truck located at the brewery and it was so good. Had a couple beers that didn't disappoint and then finished at the Ice Cream shop. We're from out of town, but when we come back to Paso Robles we'll definitely visit Tin City again!
google avatar

Gary Q.

Yelp
Continuing our drunken brewery hopping my buddy and I decided to finish off with TinCity. We were the only ones here so service was excellent lol. They specialize in cider drinks and do cool looking flights. These drinks were awesome on a warm day and perfect end to our tour. Will return!
google avatar

Olga K.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and watch the Amazon Prime Documentary "Tin City" before you visit the actual location. You will get an idea of who the winemakers/owners are at the location and give you a new appreciation for wine and other drinks. Next time I am in the area, I will plan to spend the day. Parking was tricky on a Thursday afternoon so I can't even imagine what it will be like on a weekend.

Az A.

Yelp
Super fun, affordable, good quality wines. Wine in paso doesn't have to be expensive when you have tin city.
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
We love this place! It has everything we need. Food, wine, beer, distillery, etc. what ever you are in the mood for they have it here. Reminds me of the Barton in Sebastopol. Both are amazing and go to's anytime we are in the area.

Sue K.

Yelp
Came here with family members for husbands 70th birthday celebration We could have spent more time but had a dinner reservation for later that night. A great are to explore listen to music people watch and of course sample cider wine beer and snacks We enjoyed the experience and found something for everyone! The area is filled with quaint shops as well as ma and pa brewers! Everyone was kind courteous and friendly It is a great way to enjoy your time!
google avatar

Marilyn T.

Yelp
This is a cool setup with a lot of local wineries doing both production and tasting. I thought it would be like a food hall setup, but it actually spans a few streets. Parking was pretty easy. One of the breweries has a bigger outdoor patio area with lots of tables, a food truck, games, etc. There's also a restaurant, an olive oil shop, and an Negranti creamery has an outpost there, but the focus is mostly wine here. Many of the tasting rooms are smaller and are by appointment only, and hours may be limited, so plan ahead!
google avatar

Andrew B.

Yelp
I have to be honest - this is the dumbest place I've ever been to. I get the whole weird "we're only open for Thre hours every 3rd - 6th - and 11th odd days on even months" but unless you come here o ma weekend it's a joke. Even if you come on a weekend it's filled with a bunch of sub-par wineries that offer minimal options for food. Don't waste your time - this is the Wall Drug of wine stops

Lilia G.

Yelp
This was a very cool place and the start to our wine weekend. It's casual and has lots of food and drink options (mostly drink options from what I could tell). Y'all should definitely stop by!
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place on a sunny, lazy Monday. Started with small beers from the brewery, had a great, informative wine tasting and chatted with the owner who generously comped our wine tasting due to our honeymoon celebration. Ended up at the nearby restaurant for a nice bite. Awesome day!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Great area for wine tasting, tap rooms, food options. Games are readily available for friends and family.

Rosa Y.

Yelp
Tried the flight, all flavors were good do hard to choose favorite. Service was great!
google avatar

Tee A.

Yelp
Sounded like a wonderful idea. Wineries, breweries and food all in one place. However, it's extremely overrated. Parking is not the greatest, food truck in the Barrel house brewery was over priced bar food at best. The reviews make this place seam like a Do Not Miss! Area. If I never came back I wouldn't regret it. Just glad we didn't come on a weekend. The three stars are for the service. The service was very friendly. Walking around, everything was close to each other. No my idea of a must-see.
google avatar

Isabel T.

Yelp
Awesome for the whole family! There are beers and wines, ice creams and shakes (non-alcoholic), and lots of olive oil tasting for my foodies! Most of the breweries have small bites as well!

Alex C.

Yelp
I took my husband whisky tasting with some family and friends of ours for his 40th Birthday. Our first stop on the list was Tin City distillery. And we had nothing short of an amazing time. Our tender was Joseph and he was awesome. It was our first time and he was great along with the whiskey. He was patient, funny, and took his time with us and an all around great guy. Highly recommend this Distillery. He made our experience unforgettable. Thanks Joseph, until we meet again.

M E.

Yelp
Went to TC on a cold rainy day. In spite of that we had a blast... visited Onx winery and tasted several delicious reds (bought a few), a wonderful olive oil tasting at Olivas de Oro, and a sheep milk ice cream shop, Negronti. Everyone was friendly and obviously loved Tin City.

S B.

Yelp
Great choice of venues! We had live music, food from an on-site food truck and drink from the brewery. Service was quick as well!

Nina R.

Yelp
We went to Tin City last Jin 2nd of 2022. It would have been an awesome place but most of the wine places are closed and or are by appointment only. There was a cafeteria where you can eat a sandwich and a basic salad. I would think with all the hype and promotion of this place there would be more to it but not! It wasn't inviting at all. There were no people around. And you don't know which shops are open. And they all have huge signs that says appointments only. I was very disappointed!

Tina M.

Yelp
First time visit to Tin City. Love the close proximity to friendly wineries, breweries and eateries. Downside: where are the restrooms?? When you have a beer or two, a gal has to pee! Outdoor potties don't cut it.

Aimee C.

Yelp
Make sure you research wineries. Majority require tasting appointments. We stuck with the breweries. Nice location. On a Sunday it was not very busy.
