How to Make the Most of a Last-Minute Trip to Spain - AFAR

"A towering, party-ready neon landmark in the city center: a 27-foot-tall, sombrero-wearing beer-bottle sign that reads as festive and iconic by day or night, though at dawn it stands quietly amid the calm sounds of the plaza." - Mira T. Lee

The landmark is always our meeting place whenever we plan to transfer to another place in Madrid.

It's a Madrid icon. Yes, it's cool. Yes it lights up. But really that's about it. Supposedly it's been in the square for almost 100 years.

A famous advertisement sign for dry wine brand that has been standing in the square since 1936. It has been found since anyone can remember, and has become a real cultural icon

İf you wish to see central you should choose this place. Nice view from balconies. Drinks and services very well. Different view point for the big street.

Super famous neon ad that became of the significant points of interest of Madrid It’s cool to compare how it looks now and how it was 50 years ago, for example

I guess this is one of the things you’re supposed to see while you’re here. The big plaza was under construction while I was there in 2023..

Nice sign, better seen at night

Yelp
In the center of Puerta del Sol (the Times Square / Trafalgar Square of Madrid), the Tio Pepe looks down from above. Installed initially in 1936, it has survived the Spanish Civil War and the building being sold. It was removed in 2011 and then returned in 2014 with refurbishments and updates and a new rooftop. If you are familiar with Boston's Citgo sign, then you'll know what we're talking about. It's tradition. [Review 12521 overall, 2311 of 2019.]

Yelp
This sign has presided over Plaza de Pureta del Sol for a very long time, The company's website has alot of info on the history. But for me it really just help sets the mood for the plaza. with its historic and almost kitschy sign. It can be seen from anywhere in the plaza but my favorite is from across the plaza with the fountains at night, like in the picture I posted. When I first came to Madrid it was on top of the building that now houses the Apple Store but it got bumped when they renovated the building. After disappearing for a few years it reappeared on top of the hotel where it stands now. I missed it when it was gone and am happy it is back! The plaza wasn't the same without it, especially at night when the neon really shows up.
