First time ever eating a Tlayuda and I was very impressed with the flavor..oh my! The staff were so helpful since we couldn’t speak Spanish well. They walked us through each item. The atmosphere was very serene especially after passing the grill on the way in. Will definitely come back for validation.

I just had a filling lunch here and I'm stuffed! I ordered the Tlayuda premium (300 pesos) that came with carne asada and ribs. It also came with sides of avocado and onions. The meal is huge, you get two plates one for the Tlayuda and one for the meats! First the Tlayuda was crispy and the cheese was so good. It's so cheesy that you could do a cheese pull with it. By itself along with the provided salsas, it's a meal in itself. Now the meat was tasty and not fatty. I really enjoyed the carne asada, it has the fresh off the grill taste. Combining the meat and the Tlayuda made it a wonderful meal. I also had an agua de sabor, lemon flavor. It was like a honey lemon iced tea. It was really refreshing. The restaurant was not busy at all an hour after it opened. It's a large space and was very comfortable. Overall I recommend coming here for lunch or dinner. It will fill you up. If you're two people, I highly recommend just ordering one Tlayuda premium and sharing it. We ended up taking some home since we ordered two. If you're in the neighborhood, I definitely recommend giving it a try!

First off I like my food, loved the live performances but the service was extremely lacking, especially towards the end when the restaurant was getting empty, my cuñado & I ordered 2 shots but were waiting for orange slices. We couldn't wait anymore since we had to go so we took them neat and asked for the bill. My wife and cuñados tlayuda was folded??? Never seen that before but they also said it was "meh" (tasajo y cecina.) Trago de mezcal was fairly priced and decent burn/flavor. Probably not going back unless someone wants to. Let me know if you know of a spot I should check out 😁

Google
This was a big place but not even a quarter full. They had a Jackie Chan movie playing loudly on a tv on the back wall which didn’t do anything for the atmosphere. Our meals were very big but the meat was dry, the drinks were fine and service was good with the staff being friendly, the toilets were mediocre and not the cleanest they could have been. Would probably not revisit.

Google
Very tasty dishes, not only tlayudas but also the other items are really really good, service is attentive and quick, live music is nice too.

Google
Suitable for vegetarians. 😊 They were very accomodating to top the tlayudas with nopal (cactus). Great place to try warm tlayudas against the background of live music and jamaica (hibiscus) drink for a good price! Very smoky location and poor ventilation unfortunately. Other food like tostadas was not served warm. Pay in cash or expect to be charged 3% extra for credit card payment.

Google
The place is very clean with live music and the waiters are very friendly and helpful while deciding what to buy. But, the food itself I’m not a big fan of. It might be just me and my tastes, but I felt the tlayuda was a little dry. I shared a single tlayuda with a friends as it was huge.

Google
This place is clean! I didn't get sick. I had the Costilla Tlayuda. It was great! The menu doesn't say there is beer and mezcal. But, they do sell it. The staff was friendly and they had live music. The place was a little smokey due to the cooking. But, it was manageable. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
If you can get past the racist logo, which I didn't notice until I sat down, this place is pretty good and very reasonably priced. They almost exclusively have tlayudas on the menu, which I ordered with Cecina (129 pesos). I also had a Michelada. They didn't have corona or Victoria oddly, so I had it with Heineken. A true fusion of cultures! Tlayuda was great with a ton of cheese. I loved the salsa that came on the side. Wouldn't have minded some salsa de cebollas, but that's alright. Bathrooms were a bit rough but otherwise the place was clean and spacious. Food came out VERY quickly.

Yelp
Love this place that was recommended by a friend, is kind of a karaoke restaurant with great food and service , the tlayudas were very good and way better than the Netflix la chinita . The drinks are also very tasty . Cold beer also available. This is a family ambience. Heard also there's shows sometimes. I definitely will be back and will tell everyone about this place

Yelp
For a traditional Oaxacan dish, a tlayuda is worth tryin! Each has a base of a corn maize crunchy tortilla filled with a bean spread and oaxacan cheese with your choice of protein. I got the tlayuda with arrachera (beef). The veggies as a nice crunch and the pickled onion/chilies and range of salsas add to the flavor. The location is off a beaten path from the city center but it's worth the walk. It's a place visited by locals!

Yelp
We enjoyed the tlayudas and the service from Jose so much that we went twice! Yelp shows that they open at 3, but both times we went, it was closer to 12:45/1:00 and we were served. Jose made it clear, however, that the place gets super busy at night when they have live music. Tlayuda with Chorizo is nicely priced at 129p and plenty for two to share! Load up on the spicy salsa, guac sauce, and the pickled onions/peppers! Cerveza is wonderfully priced at 30p and if you ask nicely, you can get a basic espadin mezcal, as well. (Didn't keep the receipt with the price on it). As people have said, it's a bit out of the center of the city, but it's a nice ~15-20 minute walk or you can grab a taxi if you're so inclined. It's definitely worth it for such a hearty lunch with wonderful service!
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
So worth the walk or taxi drive! Beer and mezcal but not on menu, just ask nicely : ) Pretty simple, order a tlayudas with whatever you want inside. Don't be afraid of the salsa/guac/ etc. load it up and get a little messy! Don't miss the onions, spicy!!! Enjoy the music and plan your return. Service was awesome too!

Yelp
I'm almost embarrassed to say that I came here because I was hesitant to enter the building when I saw the restaurant mascot on the wall. It' very racist as is the name of the restaurant. The only reason I went was because I was invited to meet friends I made on the trip and we were told the restaurant had a nightly interpretation of the guelaguetza. The food was poor quality and the entertainment mediocre. With so many places in Oaxaca this was a poor choice.

Yelp
Great place for authentic Oaxacan food. Ambiance is casual and service is quick and friendly. The food has amazing flavor and they have plenty of options on the menu to sample some great local food.
google avatar

Nick G.

Yelp
Food was very good. They could use more variety in terms of non meat but guess this place is strictly for Tlayudas and they are the best.

Erica A.

Yelp
Quedamos encantados...que sabor tan rico! Much deliciosa comida y la gente muy amable. We were super pleased with the rich flavor and delicious tasting tlayudas. The service was on point...everyone was friendly and welcoming.

Juan Carlos S.

Yelp
Kitchen does not turn on exhaust fan. Restaurant is full of smog intentionally as they turn it on when you complain.

Roy R.

Yelp
We stopped by after seeing good reviews and ordered tostadas (pork and chorizos) but when the food arrived, the meat was cold! Never going back.

Yelp
Tlayudas el Negro is a bit of a walk, but it is worth the trip from town. The large restaurant has a grill up front and a large and rustic dining room with folding chairs around tables. There was live music on Friday night, and he was pretty good. The food was incredible. We ordered a Tlayuda Con Chorizo. The tlayuda is fresh and the cheese here is OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!! It is so fresh. The chorizo is wonderful and is served on the side as crisp links. I enjoyed every bite of the crunchy tortilla with black beans and melted cheese. I used lots of pickled onions. We also ordered grilled nopales y cebollas, which were a tasty side. Our entire meal was 150 pesos (including aguas fracas - DM had te y lemon which I do not recommend but I had jamaica which was wonderful). Yup, that is about $8. And totally amazing and very filling (one tlayuda for two people is plenty). Great and friendly service and lovely locals round out the experience.

Yelp
Love love love this place but definitely come hungry. Everything is fresh and just the fact this this is grilled on the coals just sets the flavor to a new height Please make sure you experience your Tlayudas here

Yelp
When flying into Oaxaca, I sat next to a man who was on his 4th visit in 4 months to Oaxaca. He told me about tlayudas, which would be difficult to find outside of Oaxaca, as the oversized corn tortillas are special to this state. Wary of having to negotiate prices at carts and in the markets, we turned to Yelp to find a sit-down restaurant that served tlayudas and we found Tlayudas el Negro. We ventured on foot from the main area of Oaxaca to TeN, along sidewalk-less streets. We saw the smoke emanating from the grill first, and I knew this was it. A man saw us and ushered us in. We were seated immediately at a round table where live music was playing and the smoke from the grill gently wafted in the air. Menus were placed before us. Requests for drink orders were made. Our server returned with our bottle of water and we ordered 1 tlayuda with dried beef, having read a tip that 1 tlayuda would fill 2 bellies. We also ordered flan. The dried beef was actually quite tender. I had expected a beef jerky-like consistency, but was pleasantly surprised it was more like a thin steak. I appreciated the pickled onions as a condiment. The flan was OK, much like the flan I buy in the refrigerated Mexican desserts section at a international grocery store in the US. Overall, TeN was a great locals joint, where basic Spanish will get you by, or do what I do at a dim sum restaurant in Hong Kong: point at menu items! There are also 2 clean bathrooms available for patrons.

Yelp
Came as a recommendation from someone as having the best Tlayudas. They were the worst - cheese not melted, not really even fresh. The best ones are in the market that looks like a hole in the wall with all the stores. Save your money here.

Andrea A.

Yelp
They need to change the name. Offensive and pictures on wall need to be updated. The fried pork was delicious though.

Yelp
El servicio es bueno en general pero la comida ya no es lo que era antes, las tlayudas muy delgadas y con una cantidad mínima de ingredientes, para su precio puedes encontrar algo mucho mejor.

Yelp
This a popular place and well known by the locals. It was recommended by our tourist guide. I'm glad we took his word. Due to the fact that the restaurant lyes in a residential area, it was hard to find a parking spot. The restaurant was nearly packed but still got seated quickly. Our server greeted us and took our beverage order quick then we had plenty of time to look over the menu. The menu was not that big, the tlayuda is the main dish you just got to decide the choice of meat and any sides or extras that you may desire. I loved the cheese they use in their tlayudas, but I guess you'll see that almost everywhere in Oaxaca. The restrooms could use a renovation, they need some work done as soon as possible. FYI. If paying with credit card, they will add 3% surcharge so you may want to carry cash with you instead.

Yelp
On our recent trip to Oaxaca, Mexico we were recommended to this place by our Airbnb host and we were very happy that we chose to try out this establishment. When I go back I would definitely go back and eat here again! I've even recommended them to family. The food was great and the price was very reasonable. They don't take card so have cash /pesos. When a local recommends a place 9/10 it's going to be good. Hope you enjoy the food as much as we did. Happy travels.

Yelp
A must while in Oaxaca. I didnt know how far it was from my hotel, so it was quite the walk.. nonetheless I was happy about the walk after eating half a tlayuda and a tostada. My favorite was actually the tostada de chorizo. I want to go back just for that tostada! It was the most flavorful tostada I've ever had. Awesome place, they had live music, and you see all of what goes on with the preparation of your food. Great service!!

Paymon A.

Yelp
There was live music and quick service. Food was good. Had the Tlayudas and a local beer. Nothing fancy but a great spot if out that way.

Yelp
Today I tried another Tlayuda place: Tlayudas el Negro. I have driven by this place several times and today I decided to check it out. It is a really big space with loads of tables and chairs, they also have a roof area. The service was very quick and efficient. I had a Tlayuda with Tasajo, there are not that many ways to make a Tlayuda but what is different at this place is that you can ask for your Tlayuda to be rolled up just like a hard taco roll. This way makes it a lot easier to eat and less messy. The Tlayuda was good and the Tasajo also. After 4-5 pm you can phone to order and they will deliver it at your house in the centre!! What is also interesting is that they mention in several places (you will see it on the wall in my photo) that if you do not like your Tlayuda it's free, if your waiter doesn't attend you well he will have to pay the bill and if the cook burns your Tlayuda, he will have to pay for it. Haha I find it a good way to get the best out of your staff!

Yelp
Me, as I cross the door into the restaurant : The place is messy, there's a lot of of smoke, I'm not even that hungry... Me, after finishing my chorizo tlayuda: This is the best food I've had so far during my trip to Oaxaca and I'm sooo full but it was worth it.

Elizabet L.

Yelp
+1 point service: friendly and quick +1 point overall atmosphere: large space, music, bathrooms, clean +2 points food: good price point ($80 tlayuda, $20 soda), big portions (we split a tlayuda and it was plenty for both), three toppings for the tlayuda (avocado, pickled onion, chile) It's a good sit down restaurant that isn't too pricey.

Yelp
A taxi drive away from the center of touristy food joints but worth it. I ordered the Tlayuda con tasajo, my friend and I also ordered some grilled onions and cactus... so yummy! The service was great too. If I find myself in Oaxaca again, I'll be sure to make this place a spot.

Dafne S.

Yelp
It's hands down delicious!!! The food has an authentic simplicity that captivates your taste buds. The environment is chilled and makes the experience really nice. Service is great and I loved the live music. Delicioso!!! Auténtica comida que te cautiva con sj simplicidad El servicio es muy bueno y me encanto la musica en vivo
google avatar

Roberta S.

Yelp
Such a good dinner! Grilled cactus, delicious onions and meat. Didn't want the Tlayudas given it was just me but there's plenty else to come here for!

J P.

Yelp
Want to have an inexpensive but good meal where locals go to eat? This is the place. Very basic. Very limited food items. But, it's the real deal! A bit away from the craziness of the tourist areas, this is well worth the walk. Tlayudas is a local food consisting of a very large toasted tortilla filled with whatever suits you. Nothing fancy here. Glad we went

alex b.

Yelp
Fabulous . Authentic . Mezcal is the only alcohol you can buy with your meal . And No American /Canadian millennial tourists to ruin the experience .
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
Te de limon was my favorite. The salsas they serve to go with food were great. Tlayuda with no meat was good. They cook the food when you order. They served us fairly quickly so service was pretty good. I enjoyed live band that was playing.
google avatar

Yelp
Had an awesome dinner here last night thanks to Yelp reviewers giving good reviews. The place was packed and my friend and I were the only gringos in the place, which was a great sign. We just had tostadas and mezcal but they were damn good tostadas and the mezcal hit the spot as well. (Side note: they don't have beer or other alcohol, just mezcal.) This will be a spot I take friends in the future. So good!

Andrew C.

Yelp
Great tlyudas....the best in oaxaca........................,.......................................

Lin Y.

Yelp
Nothing really special about tlayudas in general. Just did it to check off on my oaxacan food list. And the dried slice of beef on top didn't make it any better. It's basically an oversized tortilla with a bland cheese and bland sauce that's dry cooked over the grill. A bit dry and dull. Not really worth the walk across town for.

Claudia R.

Yelp
Really terrific easy atmosphere and nice waiters. Sensillo tlayudas were fantastic. Be warned the delicious taste is from pork fat...even the bean and cheese one.
