Nicole Byer, Host of Netflix’s ‘Nailed It,’ Reveals Her Favorite Foods | Eater

"A gritty, beloved neighborhood spot described on its site as “truck stop gourmet,” located on Broadway between La Salle and Tiemann Place near 125th Street; she lived above it and went almost every day. Her usual order was cheese fries with gravy on the side and a Caesar salad loaded with extra cheese, extra dressing, chicken, and bacon, and she notes the place doesn’t really offer desserts." - Greg Morabito

I’m from Iowa and this place is amazing. I’ve been through many places in NYC with a similar background and style and this place is the best. The atmosphere at a minimum is 6 stars and the service was even better. The food topped it all with the cherry on top. Our server was amazing and helped our larger group out perfectly. Food is slightly on the higher end of expense but you get exactly if not better than what you pay for. 100% worth it and 100% reccomend.

Google
I had lunch here and ordered BBQ pulled pork sandwich with a Caesar salad. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming - a place where neighbors gather and enjoy a good time. The food was great - my friend had the chicken penne, which was also delicious. The Servers were friendly, and we really enjoyed our visit! Plus, they also have a lovely terrace!

Google
Genuinely such a great spot to eat on a semi regular basis. Been here multiple times and the food is always enjoyable and more importantly it tastes fresh. Another awesome thing about this location is that the meals all taste just as good as they look! The fries really are that crispy, the salad really is that balanced, and both the entrees really are the star of the show. I would have liked to see the waiter be more approachable and attentive but he’s also the only one so it’s understandable! Last thing is that it is pretty hot in here. I’m not sure if the AC was down, but New York heat mixed with hot served food would really benefit from having a cooler environment.

I usually come by for Buffalo Wings & other foods and I must say HUGE Shoutout to Ruth (Waitress) & the manager ( older guy with glasses ) I should remember his name lol, but let me let everyone know! These 2 give amazing service!! from the manager he always fixes any little mistakes or issues, always on point with customers and restaurant overall!! & Ruth always greeting and getting the right orders and delivering safe and delicious foods! Love Toast and I will continue to come and enjoy it!

Food is always good here and they serve all day breakfast options. I had the french toast and I love the strawberry butter it comes with. I also love the mac and cheese.

Visited Toast 125 at 3157 Broadway for the second time. Overall, it's a nice spot with a good vibe. The Mexican burger was solid; juicy and flavorful; but like most of the menu, priced on the higher side. Then again, that's consistent with the restaurant's overall pricing. The ambiance was pleasant; low-level music playing boleros and other Spanish classics really set a cozy, relaxed mood. We checked out the special lunch prices, but honestly, they didn't make much sense to us. We ended up ordering from the regular entrée menu, which felt like a better value. One thing that caught our attention was the drink pricing; beer was only $2 more than a soda, so it felt like a better deal than paying high for soft drinks. Service-wise, this is where they dropped the ball. It took quite a while to get our appetizers, and after that, we barely got any attention from the staff. That part of the experience really stood out in a negative way. Overall, good food and ambiance, but the service needs serious improvement.

Lovely little place to eat. Love the mac and cheese, it was war and creamy. Worth the time and effort. Not too far from Columbia University.

Yelp
This is one of my go too places in the area when I can't make up my mind on where to go for dinner. This time I got a French onion soup with a side of sweet potato fries. It was a very satisfying meal and would get it again. I've been here multiple times and the food never disappoints. The service is always really good too. The people are always super friendly and helpful. One time when we ordered pick up, we forgot something and they came running after us to make sure we got it. The ambiance is really nice too. The music is pretty good when I've gone. Overall this is a solid choice for some decent American food.

Yelp
Toast is one of my favorite spots. Pretty standard bar decor, but the staff are friendly and attentive, and they do comfort food properly. From the burgers to the chicken sandwiches and the wings of all flavors, you can come here and get right regardless of the time of day or meal you're looking for. Definitely in my regular rotation.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with a diner! It was cozy and clean. The menu on the wall had plenty of food and drink options making it hard to choose. Our waiter was attentive, seemed unsure at times but did go ask someone for clarity. Again... it's a diner!

Yelp
AMAZING Haply Hour from 4-7 with drinks AND food. Honestly one of the best on the UWS. I had the frozen margarita ($6 and you can add flavor) and wings and both were soo good. The buffalo wings were crunchy, juicy and had a delicious tangy sauce, plus came with blue cheese and veggies and the frozen margarita was a good size and gave me a nice buzz. Service was also great- server was attentive and staff were really nice!

Yelp
I came here after a show at columbias theater and was really half I did! Food: this is a diner that has several options and a bar. We were craving some breakfast food and got the French toast and fries! Both were solid, and they offered huge portions! Ambience: there is a really fun vibe! The bar makes it a bit more trendy compared to most diners. Service: good attentive service, where I didn't feel rushed! Price: reasonably priced!

Yelp
Very misleading - sign says $10 burger and beer, which seems too good to be true. Turns out it was! We were explained AFTER our check arrived that it's a $10 burger if you buy a beer. The server admitted it was misleading but did nothing to rectify the situation. I even ordered by saying, "We're going to have the $10 burger and beer!" As someone who works in the industry I find this incredibly sketchy and I will definitely not be back.

Yelp
Ok.. I didn't take any Pics because once the food arrives I devour it They have a pretty full menu, but I will say this. First, I tried the Mac N Cheese.. It was good! Nice taste.. Knocked it out no problem. Then I tried the Grilled Cheese.. It was good! Nicely cooked, good amount of melted cheese.. Can't go wrong. Then I had to try the mozzarella sticks and woah! I must say.. They make them there from scratch.. The cheese is silky smooth and soft melted.. Lightly breaded.. You've never had anything like these Mottz sticks! A+ And lastly, I saw the Beef Sliders and well.. I had to try those and let me tell you.. They did not disappoint at all! They were flavorful. They come in 3's. Pat LaFrieda beef patties.. So you know they're the truth! I again devoured those bad boys with some Fries which were good as well. My favorites were the Sliders and Mottz sticks though. They also have a great Happy Hour on food and beverages if you're up for it. Really great deals. The service is pretty on point. The manager and wait staff does a great job with accommodations. The venue is nice, homey, warm. Pretty good amount of seating. Clean. Music isn't blasting in your ears so you can hear each other speak. A block or 2 away from The train, so easy to get to. I'll try to remember to take some pics for the next time! So if you're looking for a cool spot for Happy hour, food, sips, lunch or dinner.. This is a great place to start! Now visit Toast, have some good food and enjoy the experience! Have a great one y'all!

Yelp
An American bar restaurant in every capacity. A warm place to stop for burgers and brews, a perfect place to watch the game. That said, the food couldn't be confused for 5 stars.

Yelp
Nice spot for brunch. Relatively on the less expensive side. I had their smoked salmon and it was very good! Nicely portioned too. They've got plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. You'll probably always get a table. If you're local, I'd recommend coming by at least once to try out this small business.

Yelp
This place is pretty darn good! I stumbled along this place when I moved to the area nearly 2 years ago and have been back many times since. Anytime I'm feeling a little lazy for dinner, it's hard to say no to this place as they're always reliable, fresh, and delicious! I pretty much always get the grilled cheese and it's sooo good. It's made on sourdough and it's a perfect mix of crunchy and soft. If you're going to get anything as an appetizer, definitely get the mozzarella sticks. They're so fresh, soft, and absolutely melt in your mouth. Easily the best mozzarella sticks I've had in a long, long time. The place itself is also pretty nice! It's got a pretty laid back vibe and always has good music playing. I've never had a problem getting a table for lunch or dinner and it's very clean on the inside. The one thing I will say is that I've had quite a few encounters where I've been done with my water for a while before they come by again to refill. Sometimes it's no problem at all, but it's happened enough times that it seems like a small enough area of improvement. Doesn't keep me from coming back!

Yelp
The BEST food (Terragon chicken, fish tacos, calamari) cocktails, draft beer, dessert and ambiance that's economically sound in Manhattan not far from #ColumbiaUniv . Say you hello to Kevin the bartender & Ethan/Jenifer Host

Yelp
i got the french onion soup, a small house salad, and the half chicken with mashed potatoes. the french onion soup was ok. it wasn't terrible, it had a good layer of cheese. but i feel like the onions should have been simmered more, they had a bit of a crunch to them. the house salad was disgusting. the greens didn't taste washed. they had a weird waxy taste to them. the half chicken was so disappointing and underwhelming. i had to look at it with my flash on to make sure it wasn't raw. it tasted like chicken with no seasoning at all. the mashed potatoes weren't good either and the gravy it was served with was very thin like watery. i understand that this isn't maybe one of their standout dishes (like for example the mac and cheese that the waiter recommended to me) but i still felt like there should have been more effort. i couldn't eat the chicken there i had to take it home and re cook it myself with more seasoning. also i want to add that the owner made me feel uncomfortable. my server was very nice but the owner didn't make me feel welcome at all. i almost felt like he was annoyed that i was there? all in all, i might come back again but would order things they are known for because there is a serious lack of effort for the other dishes. the layout of the restaurant is a little weird. also the tables are wayyyy too short. i am a small girl and i felt like the distance between the food and my mouth was too high so i imagine a larger person would be bothered even more.

Yelp
Great neighborhood tavern vibe with a varied menu and delicious food. Went there three times when visiting my son in NYC.

Yelp
Cozy bistro with a full bar and menu comprised of all of the classics for brunch, lunch, and dinner. I came around noon on a Sunday and they were incredibly understaffed. They had one chef and one waiter that were working on serving ~10 different parties. There was a ton of free space for more customers too I ordered a bison burger and it was very dry. The fries were pretty tasty however 5

Yelp
Toast is absolutely one of favorite bars and restaurants in all of New York City. What makes the place so special? First, the food is fresh and well made. You can tell it's been made with care. Second, the staff is attentive, genuine, and very personable. The same goes for the manager and owner. Third, the beer selection is always good and pretty diverse. Lastly, the clientele is very eclectic. It can be highly educated, because the bar is located near Columbia University, Manhattan School of Music, and Barnard College. With all of that said, though, there are many working class locals from the neighborhood who are also patrons. And the best part about the ambiance is that everyone mingles with one another in a very relaxed and social, and down-to-earth atmosphere. If you are one to like interesting and diverse conversations, come grab a seat at the bar.

Yelp
I live nearby and this is our favorite neighborhood spot. Staff is friendly and personable and the food is great. We particularly love the happy hour and the specials throughout the week. Toast, yall rock.

Yelp
Larry and Yogi made this experience sooo amazing!!.... This place is the vibe! Seriously!!....

Yelp
Great food and even better drinks! Nice ambience and location is very close to the 1-9 subway. Live music would make this place even better.

Yelp

Yelp

Yelp
Highly recommend Toast for your next delivery meal at home. Would I order from here again? Yes! Order straight from their website toastnyc.com Sooooo delicious. We had the half roasted chicken w rosemary mashed potatoes and gravy $16 and added a caesar salad for $2 HIGHLY recommend this dish! It smells and tastes amazing. May just be the best mashed potatoes I've ever had. The gravy was delicious and the whole meal arrived well packed and hot! BLT was delicious! Well made sandwich that was nicely wrapped and stayed together till the last bite. We chose the thick white bread which was great and the garlic mayo was delicious! We Chose fries as our side. They came in a bag and tasted great( like better five guys fries) Caesar salad was very good, great homemade croutons! Also they had a nice fiddlehead IPA beer as well. All in all, a nice dinner with delivery and a tip fitting of this pandemic and you still have dinner under $60!

Yelp
Great place for a Friday night NBA game, great service and delicious food! Nachos and burger were huge portions.

Shaquan C.

Yelp
I loved this place when it was on Amsterdam Ave. They HAD the best nachos in the world. Imagine my dismay when they closed down. They reopened a short while later on Broadway but they didn't have nachos.... Fast forward they now have nachos. Yayyyyy. They taste horrible. The buffalo chicken was salty and over sauced. The only thing I liked was the drinks. The bartender was good vibes and kept em coming.

Yelp
Twice in a month, like two slices of TOAST A bottle of wine to relax along with some wings and calamari as starters. Always hard to make a decision on what to order because the Turkey Burger and Cajun Catfish Sandwich are such contenders along with other menu items. However for last nights dining pleasure the pick was Tacos. Chicken and fish options, both very tasty but the shinning glory has to go to the sauce that elevates both tacos to the next level. Doesn't hurt that it also brings the heat that I love. Like every other time no disappointments. Last nights waitress was Vanessa and she was simply a delight and thanks for the suggestions btw. Once again a TOAST to the happy customer. Lol

Yelp
My mom wanted a burger for her birthday and we ended up at toast. The Grange was closer but I'm not a fan, and she saw the prices there and said hell no. The prices at Toast are a lot better. We loved our food so much that I came back the next day with my husband and another couple. I'm trying to remember the last time I ate at the same restaurant two days in a row.. and I'm pretty sure it's never happened. She had a burger and her only complaint was that it was too big (not actually a complaint in my eyes). I had the lamb burger which was to die for. It's stuffed with feta cheese and even typing this review right now makes my mouth water. As much as I wanted to order it again the next day, I wanted to see if Toast just makes good burgers or if they make everything well, so I ordered the roast chicken and mashed potatoes which was delicious aside from needing a little salt. The three others at the table ordered various burgers and everyone loved their food! We were joined by a toddler and a baby in a stroller. There were other families with kids there. The place feels pretty family friendly. There's a kids menu available by request.

Yelp
It is quite the mystery. I know I have frequented this place more than a few times than I care to recall. I can say with all assurance that the food I ate was better than average pub food. This is the home of a lamb burger that I craved after (let's be real, I still do). Their beer is always in stock and ice cold. Surprisingly, I've never had a cocktail here--- shocking, I know. But this is the type of place to grab a bite and relax with people you like. The music is on point and the lighting is right. It can get packed but it's full of fun loving, good folks. The exterior doesn't grant much of a view but step inside and make yourself comfortable. Service is friendly and non-intrusive, with a rustic, cozy decor. Bathrooms are clean and set up to the right of the bar. It may not be a place to travel to, but it sure is a solid spot in the neighborhood that has been around for a while. Worth checking out.

Yelp
I've been working in the area for over three years and never thought about buying food here. I was craving a burger and said why not. So glad I did! The English burger is so good! The fries are good as well. It's been a while since I've had a burger from a bar. A different pace from the popular smash burgers that are taking over the city. Highly recommend

Yelp
I think this is a nice brunch option near Columbia university. I came here in a group of 4 on a weekend and it was pleasantly crowded but we were still able to seated right away. I had the Eggs Benedict ($13). I requested the eggs should be made with the yolk hard and they fulfilled my request which I really appreciated! The service was overall very nice. For the Eggs Benedict, I loved it overall. The only part I wasn't so sure about was the Canadian bacon which tasted like ham. Next time I would try the Italian sausage perhaps. I think the prices are very good; their sides are priced especially nicely. It's $2 to add bacon, $3 for eggs any style, and $3 for Italian sausage. I also really enjoyed the hot apple cider which was $5. The rim had something like cinnamon sugar which I thought was a nice touch.
google avatar

Yelp
They have good chicken sandwiches and chicken fingers. The food is usually fresh and well-presented. Overall tasty. Haven't dined in so can't speak to that but for pick up or delivery they do a good job.
google avatar

Mik L.

Yelp
This place seems to have good reviews in general, but maybe hit and miss depending on what you order. My BF's mom and I ordered Eggs Florentine and Eggs Norway for brunch on Saturday, but eggs with Hollandaise sauce were tasteless and smoked salmon tasted fishy and too raw and not smoked or seasoned enough. We had to put a bunch of salt and peppers to make it edible, but our dish was still not good. My BF ordered burger and he said it was fine, so maybe best to order standard American foods here. Server was friendly but I was a bit disappointed she was not attentive enough to refill my coffee when my cup was almost empty. Overall, it is very casual and laidback place, so enjoy burger without too much expectation.

Elizabeth N.

Yelp
I have eaten and ordered from this restaurant since it opened and came with the sweet orange kitty that is remembered in the artwork. Since then the fries and burgers are still great. Pulled pork sandwich used to be the best thing but has gone way downhill in quality- it's now like a sloppy joe with pork. The nachos while a great addition are a joke. My main beef is with the delivery and the staff. I know they are super busy but when you forget to put something in the bag and a delivery person has to be sent twice instead of saying no problem to me on the phone why not, "Sorry for the inconvenience". And nothing is ever offered for that inconvenience. And the delivery person has to go again because of the mistake of the staff. You all charge too much to not train your staff in common courtesy. An OG Toast eater. Thanks.

Yelp
Was in the area and ended up here. So glad I came here! I was here for dinner, ordered a burger and I was pleasantly surprised! The server was friendly and attentive - and the burger was juicy and fresh. I would definitely come back here again! This spot was super cozy and a great dinner place.

Yelp
I've been eating here for years, I've literally never been disappointed! The lamb burger and the shrimp avocado wrap are two of my favorite menu items!

Yelp
All of our apps were so delicious and the vibes were amazing. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Super cute establishment in Harlem! Very homey atmosphere, and great American classics (think BLT, steak sandwich, salads, burgers, etc) the staff is lovely! I had opted for their version of the French Dip, and added Swiss and mushrooms. My colleague had a sliced steak over salad. It appears that the steaks are on point! Tasty and tender! Looking forward to a return visit next time I'm in Heartland!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great little spot right on the border of Harlem and Morningside. Got some wings and tacos, as well as some great craft beer. The wings were phenomenal, even having been doused in sauce they were still steaming
google avatar

Amy Z.

Yelp
Always good food. Service can be less attentive at times (less attentive when they're not busy, for some reason). Appreciate the outdoor seating. Good craft beer selection usually.

Yelp
This was my second time at toast, about 5 years ago (1st time) and it was not good. I went with a friend and I enjoyed my meal and the service. I had the Cajun catfish sandwich with a mesclun salad, and the blueberry bread pudding dessert. The catfish was lightly fried (so good) and the salad wasn't oily. Just the right amount of balsamic. I always order dessert when going out and I was worried about the bread pudding because it usually sucks but they came correct. It was the right amount of blueberries and it did not dye the bread. The "I believe" brioche bread was perfect along with the Chantilly sauce. Two thumbs up for dessert-alone. The waiter/host reminds me of a bouncer very tall but very pleasant and helpful. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 due to them using soy oil. Please change to grape seed oil so I can return.

Princess H.

Yelp
This place was pretty amazing. The customer service was great. Our server Will was so kind and attentive . The lamb burger was cooker to perfection and the cheese fries was delicious. The music was on point. Love the vibe period. Definitely should come here. Also, get the Brownie Ala Mode

Yelp
Awesome little brunch place close to Columbia and Manhattan College of Music. I came here very often when I lived in the neighborhood, but stopped in this past weekend to relive old times, since my girlfriend loves their french toast and strawberry butter. The menu hasn't changed much since I moved out a year ago, but they had added two specials: the breakfast burrito and the Italian omelette. We ordered one of each since we were able to get a side of toast with strawberry butter. The burrito came stuffed with egg, beans, rice, and some type of sauce that was delicious. Many burritos come with too many beans to the rest of the filling, but this was perfectly proportioned. It was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. The Italian omelette was a variation on the eggs and sausage, coming covered with mozzarella, roasted red peppers, onion and a side of roasted potatoes. I'm not sure what they did to change them, but they were better than I remembered. The waitstaff was busy, but had time to stop by and talk for a few, which I always love. Grab the strawberry butter if you get a chance.

Yelp
The food gets five stars but the third party delivery system Ruins the food.. our delivery came an hour late, they went to the wrong address across town, and they gave me the wrong chowder. Other neighborhood restaurants have restored doing their own deliveries. I hope they soon follow... the 3rd party delivery system leaves no opportunity to communicate with a human being until it's too late...

Greg P.

Yelp
I ordered a burger from Toast over Grubhub and it came without condiments. What kind of restaurant would send out a burger without condiments? Needless to say, I won't be ordering from the restaurant again.

Carlos C.

Yelp
CC. I am very honest , generous customer for 24 years, Fails to meet my expectations in terms of service quality, response time , overall customer experience . Staff sleepy and don't appreciate goodwill and sincere tips, no kindness. The food is not great but the chefs are great I know this guys. kind Regards, CC

Bridget M.

Yelp
Summer Sunday, slow start. Avocado toast with over-easy eggs and a side of crisp bacon, iced coffee. The side of bacon is quite a generous amount (enough to share) and is curled up/crinkly, obviously cooked in a pan. My eggs were initially not as I ordered but they quickly fixed it. I'd return.

Phillip P.

Yelp
Food poisoned. I'm not pro Yelper or anything nor is my stomach weak but I ordered their "special" ribeye and it was rancid. They said the kitchen tasted it after returning and it was fine which means that the must have COVID because they have lost their senses of taste and smell. I had to throw up in the bathroom and the establishment was gracious enough to take the death meat off the bill while charging an unannounced 3% credit charge sur-fee. Our waiter was great, the drinks were great, the app wings were great, the food for my two companions was great, but if the kitchen tells you the rancid meat they served you was okay, I would reconsider.
google avatar

Yelp
This space has a great lunch special. Waiters always provide great service. They have a bar and a TV where you can catch mid day sports if you'd like. They let me change the channel because it was a soccer match. The soup / salad / half sandwich lunch special always hits the spot for me. I can go healthy or order a side of fries to scratch my sweet spot. If you want to go by yourself or with someone for a cheap lunch, this is definitely an option.

Siyun Z.

Yelp
I've walked by this restaurant so many times but never always was too nervous to go in because it looked like a dingy bar from the outside until my friend and I came here for brunch on Sunday. This places is actually pretty cute and quaint on the inside. We both ordered the breakfast sandwich. I got mine on an English muffin with pepper jack cheese and tomatoes. It came with home fries. The sandwich was very yummy, the eggs were runny just the way I like it! The server was very kind, although he forgot to mention a couple of things. The sandwich came out to be about $15 with tax and tip which isn't too bad. Definitely will come back for a quick bite since I am in the neighborhood often!

Yelp
When I need REALLY GOOD SALMON AND A GLASS OF RED WINE ... (( Honey Child)) I'm hooked. The prices are unbelievable reasonable. Diverse crowd of beautiful New Yorkers... Not to mention that there's a bar also. Very dim lighting for the lover in you! #Harlem
