16 Best Bars & Pubs in Edinburgh | Condé Nast Traveler

"With exposed brick and golden industrial lighting, Toast is a great place to linger over a mix of share plates. Food and wine pull equal weight here, although there's no pressure to have both (the coffee is great, too). The menu is heavy on the—yep, you guessed it—toast, with bacon, eggs Benedict, and avocado options. There are plenty of fun ways to doctor up your slices, too—additions include Scottish smoked salmon and wilted spinach, all at reasonable prices." - Krystin Arneson

First of all, we really liked the atmosphere. It is very nice to be able to sit outside by the river, but the interior decoration also makes you feel very good. We tried the mango eclair from the artisan desserts and it tasted very good. The French toast tasted very good and the portion was very big. The yuzu matcha lemonade was both different and refreshing. I should also mention the friendly staff. The menu is very rich, you should give it a try for brunch or to try their desserts.

Had a very nice dinner . Ordered the 3 piece cheese board as a starter and it was very generous. Had Niçoise salad with salmon. Fish, potatoes and green beans all cooked perfectly, some of the lettuce was not good, too sad to eat. Gnocchi were also very good.

Warm and friendly environment with great breakfast and coffee selections. The Latte, Eggs Benedict, and scrambled eggs on toast were all delicious. The waitresses were welcoming and nothing appeared overpriced. Highly recommend this spot for breakfast or brunch.

The waitress is very kind and lovely, she even suggests things if you’re unsure about what to order(I’m new into coffee so don’t really know much about it, she suggested me one according to what I like). The food was delicious and we were asked a few times if everything was okay, very kind. They windows were open and that made the place a bit cold (kept my jacket on) overall, very nice place. Recommended.

Walking through the doors at 11am, we were instantly captivated by the display of delectable treats awaiting us. We settled on two exquisite choices – a warm cinnamon cake and a refreshing lavender & lemon cake – both of which exceeded our expectations in every way. The cinnamon cake offered the perfect balance of spice and sweetness, while the lavender & lemon combination provided a sophisticated flavor profile that was both unique and comforting. What impressed us most was the remarkable variety of options available. Beyond our selections, the bakery showcased an impressive array of cakes and loaves, each looking more tempting than the last – from rich chocolate creations to fruit-studded delights. The service matched the quality of the food, with attentive staff who were knowledgeable about their offerings and genuinely pleased to assist us. The seating arrangements deserve special mention – comfortable chairs arranged to provide both privacy and a pleasant atmosphere for conversation. After a morning of exploring and walking, this charming establishment provided exactly the respite we needed. The combination of exceptional baked goods, welcoming ambiance, and thoughtful service made this much more than just a quick stop, enjoy!

Nice place for lunch or brunch. Good variety of dishes. The shakshuka was nice, and the huevos rancheros were pretty good, but the egg yolk was quite solid and the “soft” tortilla was hard and dry. Some nice juices on the menu too. It’s in a good location with a decent view of the water side.

Absolutely loved our breakfast here! The staff were incredibly friendly, and the food was fantastic. We tried two dishes—Avocado Poached Eggs and Mushroom Poached Eggs—and both were perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. A great spot to start the day; highly recommended!

Yelp
Great atmosphere! They encourage everyone not to use cellphones and talk to each other instead. They are open early while other places nearby are still closed. They are busy but the service is fast. Chai latte is delicious with lots of aromatic spices. Haddock, pak choi (bok choy), and egg on toasted sourdough is tasty.

Yelp
Stopped for a breakfast before the Royal Yacht Britannia tour. So glad I did! Great views, incredibly flavorful food and nice staff was all a welcome treat. Early Sunday morning the inside wasn't too busy; by the time I left, the place was packed! Locals sipping coffee and families feeding children. Debated between dishes as so many sounded delicious. Landed on sourdough accompanying a blackened skillet filled with venison, mushroom and sage sauce adorned with two eggs. Oatmilk flat white to boot. The inside was chill and the sweets case looked irresistible. Took a banana and chocolate loaf to go as a snack.

Yelp
Absolutely gorgeous view of the water. Ordered a cake and it was decent. Would like to return and try out the breakfast.

Yelp
Great brunch and pastry selection! We had the shashuka and carrot cake and both were great! The carrot cake had nice chunks of walnuts, and many people ordered it so it was already half out in an hour. The shashuka was interesting and came with a lot of veggies. Also very cute vibe and atmosphere - perfect for friends and family

Yelp
This place is close to the shore line with the view of water of Leith right outside the window. The service was great, kind hosts. The food was delicious, full of flavor, anything you choose you will enjoy. They even have a desert bar with a variety of options. This place does get crowded fast.

Yelp
Honestly, I rarely give 5 stars. But this place is honestly fantastic. Great food, great service, and great coffee. I honestly can't find any faults. The eggs I ordered were perfectly done with a nice runny yolk. Honestly, check this place out if you're in the area. You won't regret it!

Yelp
What a beautiful little place. We popped in here recently to grab some pastries to go, and were mesmerised by the gorgeous goodies on display. We ended up getting some incredible filo mince pies along with our croissants. As we waited for everything to be boxed up, we got to take in the atmosphere. Beautifully decorated with plenty of floor space, Toast is an inviting spot with a delicious sounding menu. I would absolutely love to come back for a meal in the not too distant future!

Yelp
Spacious, bright cafe on Shore. Great for coffee and brunch (avocado toast, pancakes, eggs Benedict). Has evening service too but not tried that. Good coffee, selection of pastries and cakes. Friendly service, reliable WiFi.

Yelp
We wandered upon this place while strolling by the river. We chose to sit outside to enjoy the view. The food was fantastic! I had to try the porridge, it was the best I have ever had. Others in the family tried avocado toast, fabulous, and the shakshuka, incredibly delicious as well! The coffee was perfection and the service was very pleasant. Highly recommend!

Yelp
A wonderful little spot for breakfast. Spot on flavors for food and price. Service from Zak was excellent!

Yelp
Love this little gem of a place. Timely service. Perfectly seasoned. Great environment. I had the avocado toast with poached eggs. Yum!
