Where to Stay in Barcelona When You Visit (Updated 2025)

"This social hostel feels very secure (there are fingerprint scanners at the door) and has a laid-back lounge and common area with games, an outdoor pool, and cozy pod beds that help ensure you'll get a decent night's sleep." - Matthew Kepnes

10 Life Changing Moments from 10 Years as a Nomad

"While staying in a hostel in Barcelona in 2013 a very drunk roommate took a shit in our dorm room and then locked himself out; when I woke up to let him in I realized what had happened (thanks to the shit on my hand), freaked out, yelled, and washed my hands like never before. Out of thousands of nights in hostels, this was the grossest thing that has happened to me, and afterward I vowed to only stay in dorm rooms if absolutely necessary — and to avoid hostels with a reputation for partying." - Matthew Kepnes

My stay was defined by a compelling contrast between cutting-edge comfort and one significant, sleep-disrupting oversight. The sleeping quarters were a marvel of modern hostel design, featuring ingenious personal niches that offered a surprising sense of space. Each berth was outfitted with brilliantly convenient individual reading lights and power outlets, allowing me to charge my phone without ever leaving the cozy confines of what were, without exaggeration, the most comfortable beds I've encountered in my travels. The crisp, clean bedding and the gentle hum of effective air conditioning created a near-perfect sanctuary from the vibrant energy of the city. However, this sanctuary was profoundly compromised by the complete absence of a simple curtain. This single flaw made for unexpectedly rough nights, as the lack of a visual and acoustic barrier left me exposed to the inevitable disturbances of a shared dormitory—the glare of a latecomer's light and the sounds of a fellow traveler's snoring. It was a stark reminder that no amount of technological convenience can replace the fundamental privacy and peace a basic curtain provides. Despite this nightly challenge, the human element of the experience was nothing short of exceptional. The staff was consistently top-rate, radiating a genuine warmth and helpfulness that truly set the tone for the entire community. Their unwavering dedication was the backbone of a wonderfully social atmosphere, where connecting with fellow travelers from around the world felt effortless and enriching. They were the undeniable highlight, masterfully balancing professional efficiency with heartfelt hospitality.

I stayed at TOC Hostel Barcelona from October 25th to November 1st, and I truly loved my experience! The hostel is beautiful and very comfortable — I really appreciate the decoration concept, the convenient location, and the bathroom setup. That said, I believe adding curtains to the beds would make a huge difference in privacy and comfort. Also, it would be great to have some kitchen accessories available for guests who want to cook or eat in. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the team, especially to Josefina. She is absolutely incredible and provided me with a 5-star, hotel-level service. I honestly believe she has the talent to be a concierge for big stars in luxury hotels! Josefina was extremely friendly and empathetic, making me feel welcomed and integrated — often switching seamlessly between Portuguese, English, and Spanish. As someone with extensive experience managing hotels, I strongly suggest that TOC’s HR department consider her for higher positions. She naturally demonstrates maturity, professionalism, and the ability to handle tough situations with calm and grace. My deepest gratitude to everyone for helping make this one of my best hostel experiences ever. As a solo traveler and a big fan of hostels, I truly value the welcoming environment TOC provides — it made me feel instantly connected to the city.

Stepping into TOC Hostel, I was immediately struck by the promise of a proper night's rest, thanks to their wonderfully comfortable beds, each paired with a secure, personal locker to safely stow my belongings. For a mere 2.5 euros, they offered the convenience of a fresh, fluffy towel, eliminating the usual backpacker's dilemma. The entryway was particularly impressive, setting a tone of modern, welcoming style that felt more boutique than basic, and I was especially pleased to see it was equipped with ramps and clear accommodations for wheelchairs, a truly forward-thinking approach to inclusive travel.||The private bathrooms were a genuine highlight, offering a spa-like retreat with their clean, modern fixtures and a design that guaranteed complete privacy and comfort. This stands in wonderful contrast to the standard shared showers, which presented a significant logistical challenge with their glaring lack of a dry shelf or hook, desperately needing a dedicated space to keep my clothes and toiletries from getting drenched.||Without a doubt, I absolutely loved the location, which placed me right in the vibrant heart of the city, with everything I wanted to see and do just a short stroll away. A delightful surprise was the food pool room, a kind of nice social hub where the concept of sharing a meal seamlessly blended with a casual game of pool. It's clear the hostel is packed with thoughtful amenities designed to make a traveler's stay effortless. Once again, the staff happened to be the establishment's greatest asset, transforming my stay with their incredible warmth and eagerness to assist; I truly loved their unwavering helpfulness with every question I posed.||The sleeping pods were a marvel of modern travel design, each bed equipped with its own personal power outlet, a lifesaver for keeping my phone charged and within reach. In a sun-drenched, bustling city like Barcelona, it was an absolute godsend to have powerful air conditioning providing a cool, serene oasis from the heat. The bedding itself was a delight—nice, clean, and crisp, promising a hygienic and cozy retreat. Furthermore, having individual chargers and personal reading lights ingeniously built right into the sleeping area felt like the pinnacle of thoughtful hostel planning.||However, one glaring downside dramatically impacted my sleep: the complete and utter lack of privacy. The absence of any curtains in the mixed-gender dorms simply does not work, creating an environment that feels exposed and uncomfortably public. Beyond just privacy, those flimsy curtains offer a crucial bit of sound buffering from the inevitable snorers, creating a visual and auditory barrier. If the hostel is committed to a no-curtain policy, then at the very least, they should provide complimentary ear plugs or offer them for a small sale at the front desk. Ultimately, the lack of curtains isn't solely about personal privacy; it's also about the disruptive glare of a roommate's personal light bothering everyone else trying to sleep in the shared darkness.

Location is A1. You're basically in the heart of Barcelona's gayborhood, and I never felt unsafe - even when walking home from the clubs in the wee hours of the morning. Anything you need is within a 10 minute walk - groceries, restaurants, shopping, transit... everything. Rooms were modern and cleaned regularly. I stayed here for like 3 weeks across different shared rooms - one had an en suite bathroom, and the other two did not, and so you used the shared one on the floor. There are 6 individual bathrooms per floor - 3 on each side. I never had to wait for a free toilet, BUT - idk if it's what they're eating or what, but you were pretty much guaranteed to walk into a "painted" toilet bowl once a day. They were, however, cleaned regularly - by the next day at the latest. There are 2 shower rooms per floor - one for women and one for men. Be aware that the men were not very observant of the signage - a picture of women on the women's shower door, and men on the men's, and several times they would barrel into the room. So - maybe don't ever be naked in the main area of the shower room. The shower rooms have 3 stalls, with locking doors and a light switch. There's soap on the wall, a small shelf, and a hook outside the door, as well as more hooks on the wall outside the stalls. Two sinks, and a hairdryer, but the one on the second floor wasn't working when I was there in September. The room will smell of sewage if the door isn't left open to air out, which the cleaning staff would do after cleaning, and I would if I was just int here doing my hair or something. I think it's something about the water traps not staying full to block the scent wafting up through the pipes. It wasn't overbearing - not necessarily pleasant though... like the level of aroma in a room if someone farted. I preferred the shared showers to the en suite, because you have to walk through the en suite to get to the beds, and when in a mixed gender dorm, was concerned I would be walked in on by someone returning to the room. Shower stall in the en suite was larger though, and no hairdryer. Was nice to have an ensuite toilet, and it's a separate room from the shower. Two sinks. All sinks are time release knobs - have to press a few times to let water heat up, but showers are free rein. Beds were comfortable, and you can ask for a duvet/comforter at the front desk, which frees you to use the provided sheet as a curtain, as there aren't any on the beds. Locker in the room is plenty big - it fit my carryon, backpack, and lots of shopping. Bring your own lock, or you can buy on either from the front desk or at a convenience store. Kitchen in the basement has cooking utensils, a fridge (not much room, but you can fit something), a stove, sink, seating... and shelves for dry goods. Pool was a nice touch, but was too cold for me to use in September, but others did. I had no issue having them store my luggage when I arrived, or temporarily while I checked out/back into a new room. Free wifi, and a few areas to relax, including a bar, rooftop, and outside smoking area. Overall, I really liked my stay there - it felt more like hotel than a hostel, and would stay here again!

Dangerous lack of security in this hostel! I checked-in to my room and within 30 minutes of arrival had some of my belongs stolen from inside my bed. When I was unpacking, I noticed a man sleeping in one of the beds with food lying all around him and he looked very dirty. I thought this was odd, but perhaps he had come back from a night out. He then woke up and I saw him looking through the lockers in the room but again assumed he was just confused and looking for his things. After I returned from the bathroom, he was gone and so were my belongings. After speaking with my roommates, many of them also mentioned that they were missing various valuable belongings. We later discovered he was a stranger who had somehow bypassed the hotel front door and broken into our room. The reception night staff were very dismissive and reacted as though this happens every other night. They would not even look through the cctv footage themselves to check if this thief was still inside the hotel. After looking through some of the other reviews and talking to others at the hostel, this sounds very common here. I understand that valuables should be secured in lockers in a hostel, however I would never have expected a non-guest to so easily access the room and go into my bed. As a solo female traveller this made me feel so unsafe and I had to end my stay early.

This hostel is disappointing overall. I thought this would be a good spot for digital nomads to socialise but it wasn’t. The bunk bed in room 403 was completely sagged. If you have a sensitive lower back like me, you'd might end up the next morning with pain. This was the first time in a month of traveling that that happened. My second-hand IKEA couch at home feels more supportive than this bed. The upper bunks also have no curtains or rails, so when someone turns on the light at night it shines straight into your eyes. For work a stable connection is essential, but the Wi-Fi here was really poor. The lockers are placed so high it’s hard to reach them if you’re short and carrying a big backpack. Other small inconveniences: only one washing machine and one dryer, one hooks and no shelves in the shower to put your clothes, silverfish in the toilet, poor lighting at the sink (not great for makeup) and no clean bowls at breakfast. I had to eat my cereal out of a coffee mug. They also make you pay for luggage storage. The air conditioning didn’t work in the common area (with almost no atmosphere), so I ended up sweating during my online meetings - and the Wi-Fi barely reached that space either. I actually left at noon to work from a café instead. The last straw was when a staff member insisted she’d given me a laundry token when she clearly hadn’t, and we had an awkward argument over it. To be fair, the rest of the staff were kind and attentive. The breakfast team always greeted guests with a smile and the reception staff listened and even offered a small compensation after I explained my issues. I really wish I could rate it higher, but between the bad bed, weak Wi-Fi, and hot common areas, it just wasn’t a pleasant stay.

The room is nice and clean, But the staff are very unfriendly seems like they hate their job. The blond guy checked us in and even the girl with curly hair checked us out, they both were very rude and mean. The girl started to be mean just because we asked about luggage storage, which makes no sense to be such rude and mean. I guess stuff hates to get any questions. So if you wonder about keeping luggage, There is a locker cost €3 for medium €4 for large the first hour and €0.50 on top of each hour. They also have other storage apparently depends on your booking you have to pay. but I'm unsure about it because she didn't want to explain. Anyway I would never come back even if the hostel itself is nice, such a shame it would have been a nice place with friendly or at least kind staff.

Yelp
So I have stayed here a total of 3 times . Two times in 2019 and also last night ( Nov 2023) . While this place still remains one of the priciest hostels in Barcelona the quality and service have gone down hill . The internet didn't work for my entire floor . The light in our en-suite bathroom made this loud buzzing sound that kept us up at night . The basement / kitchen area has a strong odor . There was I believe even a racial incident with one of the day time staff who asked me if I was staying here ? And proceeded to question me further after I replied yes .. Also there were a few passive aggressive employees in general ( I.e- turning on music during odd hours 5am to get people to leave common areas ) . I can't recommend staying here unfortunately.

Yelp
My friend and I stayed in a six-person mixed room at TOC for three nights. Pros: - beds are comfortable enough - decent-sized lockers for bags - lockers for secure protection of small items - nice pool area - reception staff were nice and helpful Cons: - cocktail bar is not ever open (seems weird to say it exists) - limited outdoor hours - bathroom cleanliness is OK but not great - there are not enough hooks in the bathrooms or showers! Overall, this was in a solid transit-accessible location close to lots of Barcelona's sights and restaurants.

Yelp
TOC Barcelona is the best hostel in the EU. It is very convenient to many sites and the subway. The facility itself it beautiful, from the exterior, the hallway leading to the reception area, and all of the interior. The hostel also has several suites or private rooms too. The vibe and mood is very modern and hip. The perfect place for young travelers. There are daily events in the bar/ common area, a billiards table, great house music, awesome bartenders (Emma made the best Passion fruit Mojito) and specials. I didn't use the laundry or lockers, but they are present and appeared very clean. The terrace is a decent size but the pool is very small. Luckily, there are plenty of beautiful beaches! If and when I return to BCN, I hope to stay at TOC. Unlike, other hostels, I'd suggest that they invest in Satellite TV or subtitle technology; my Spanish/Catalan is limited. Overall, the experience was great! I enjoyed the fob only entry to rooms, where you could also use your finger print to enter. Each room had a theme and or quotes adorning the walls. I loved the overhead shower that was separated from the toilet( which had a motion detector light). Oh and my balcony was an awesome addition. Also, TOC has a few restriction with fines, if broken. For instance the terrace doors must be closed at certain time, no towels or clothes can be hung outside to dry, and no outside guest( the best one, TOC cares about the safety of their guest- they also have security guards). STAY HERE!!!! I'M SURE THE MADRID SITE IS THE SAME TOO!!!!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here. We got a private room with a double bed and bathroom. My group members stayed in a room with 6 people total, but they liked the size of their room. They have a public space area with food, drinks, books and a pool table. The roof top pool was a little green, so we avoided it. I loved the location, very close to the city center and metro. Would stay again

Yelp
I had a terrible experience at this hostel. Someone who works at the hostel and had access to our room stole 100 USD and over 100 euros from my wallet that was left INSIDE my room. They also stole my friends money from her wallet. When we told the management what happened they tried to blame us and tell us we left our door open which was not true. The doors are heavy and close no matter what. (We tested it out multiple times and multiple ways, and each time it shut) I was really disappointed because this basically ruined my entire trip. It was very hard to enjoy Barcelona and feel safe after this incindent.
