I believe this is one of Bendigo’s most iconic spots—and possibly the oldest Chinese restaurant in Australia (though I could be wrong on that). Stepping inside feels like a trip back in time, with its nostalgic decor and charming old-school atmosphere. As for the food, I’d say it’s solid for a regional Chinese eatery, with a clear leaning toward Cantonese-style dishes. Personally, I’m always grateful to have access to Chinese food when I’m far from home. I do hope to see more Chinese restaurants opening up in Bendigo after this place no longer operational, especially those that highlight authentic Cantonese flavours.

Absolutely amazing meal and cosy atmosphere. We had the Bird Nest Combination and the Honey Pepper Steak. Can't recommend them highly enough. Will definitely be going back soon.

I’ve just read that Toi Shan Chinese Restaurant is shutting down, with their final day set for July 30, 2025. I’m really grateful they couldn’t find a suitable buyer—no one can do what the owners have done for over 70 years here in Bendigo . I loved how genuine the food felt… every dish was fresh and full of flavour, the staff always welcoming, and the place had such a classic, old-school vibe. Truly will be missed.

Amazing food, we stopped in Bendigo on our way to Adelaide and had heard good things about this place. So we decided to give it a try and it did not disappoint. The homemade steamed dim sim were next level, as were the spring rolls, prawn toast, and satay chicken skewers. Then we had the sweet and sour pork battered and it was probably one of the best I have ever eaten. Just a shame that they will be closing down for good in August. Will have to make the 3 hour drive back down before then.

We chose the restaurant because it’s purported to be the oldest Chinese Restaurant in Australia. The decor was definitely old school Main Street Chinese, and we didn’t know what to expect. We ordered beef and chicken dishes and some entrees. We were very impressed with the food - it was fresh, tasty and hot. The meats were tender, the veggies perfect, and the preparation was excellent. Recommended for a tasty and historic meal in Bendigo.

The beef on both dishes was really tender: beef ho-fun and sizzling Mongolian beef, the sauces were nice, specially the Mongolian. The deep fried banana and ice cream were also good. Service was prompt. Appreciated the fact there was no music or any source of loud noise present.

I went and ate there on the 4th of July had my dinner. When I went to pay I was not shown the invoice to see what I was charged for. I was quoted $50 which I new our meals was not that much. I payed but still was questioning the amount charged. Lucky he had a written copy of the invoice Infront of him and took it to see what was written down to see that I was charged $12 for the rice where it should have been only $3. I asked for a refund. Lucky I checked as they would have scored an extra $9. I wonder how many other people have been Ripped off like that. My advise is for this place is to check the invoice before paying. I am not going back there ever again. It's NOT good customer service. Making money on other people's expense.

Yelp
The staff are rude. The man who serves you has to be one of the rudest person, and the young girl as well who works night. The food is either tasting burnt or dried out. They don't like children in there premises and make that very clear! The restaurant is very small and squashy. They are lazy and allow you to sit in a mess as is and don't clean the table and glasses properly either. The floor is never clean, but have the audacity to say that you if drop a rain grain on the floor that your making a mess. They also rude about there all you can eat buffet and tell you get small quality and not leave food behind as you are wasting produce they cant afford, um I thought we was paying for what we was receiving anyway. You have to 9 times out ten call someone to order or to receive a drink or go to the fridge and get it yourself because the man is always behind the cash register looking down on life being a kill joy. They also don't know what they have in there food either, so if you have food allergies don't ask, as they don't know and wont go out of there way to help or look either. The premises is cold in winter and hot in summer. They don't use heating or cooling. Give this place a miss and keep walking for your own sanity. Especially if you have children, the man will stare them down like they are aliens.
