Small temple that served as a refuge for divorced women. The gardens are lush and well maintained. Taking photo's inside is prohibited.

The temple discourages sightseeing and no photos or videos are allowed within the grounds. If you have an interest in the temple’s history and or want to pray there, it is acceptable to enter - just be mindful of the rules and exercise proper etiquette (talk quietly, dress modestly, leave a small offering, etc). If you have questions (in Japanese), there is usually a priest within the small on-site shop.

Beautiful temple that served as an asylum for divorced women in the past. The graveyard in the back is one of the most astonishing in all of Kamakura, especially in late Autumn when the leaves of its maples turn red. The graveyard is also home to the remains of some famous figures such as the Kyoto School philosopher Nishida Kitaro. Free entrance.

Unfortunately, I believe this is the temple who has now posted a sign at the gate saying something along the lines of, this is not a tourist destination for community members only. My wife and I were very disappointed as we felt a connection to the history of this temple and would have loved to hear more about it as well as see the magnificent garden and architecture. We try our best to be respectful, learning the customs and acceptable norms of the culture but it seems some other bad apples ruined the bunch.

Good tourist attraction, if you are around Kamakura, and want to do the shrine run all around, ensure to cover this shrine, if interested in a hill trail, you can travel from this place to the Buddha Statue(Kotuko-in). It will take you around 45 minutes, but highly recommended. Remember to wear your good hiking or sports shoes! Enjoy.

Tokei-ji temple in Kamakura is a captivating destination with a unique feature—the hauntingly beautiful graveyard. This historic temple served as a sanctuary for women seeking divorce during feudal times. The serene cemetery, adorned with moss-covered tombstones, evokes a sense of tranquility and reflection. A remarkable place that intertwines history, spirituality, and natural beauty.

Nicknamed "Divorce Temple". It is a small temple, not crowded but worth the visit. Very well maintained, beautiful with a nice garden.

Another amazing place tucked away on the side of the mountain and only 5 minutes from Engakuji Temple so a must see!
