This place RULES! prices are great. Selection isn’t overwhelming and I love how small the space is. It makes me feel like I’m not in America. They have the cutest dishes, bowls, cups, and all sorts of neat goodies. I make my own Taré and it was nice to see they have a decent selection of Mirin’s, soy sauces, Saké, and Japanese beers!! Plus a great variety of curry bouillons. I also LOVE that they have authentic Japanese literacy by the front door. I wish I knew how to read Japanese. The Onigiri is awesome too. Very tasty! Love this place and will surely be going back!!

Google
Very cool place, and my mom tells me she used to go here even before I was born so that’s awesome. I always get really good stuff here like my genmaicha tea, snacks, green tea in tiny little cans and all different kind of sauces.

Google
The best Japanese store in the states!! I can't believe they could keep such great prices. The inside is clean and has no smell at all. Items are well organized and they are great selections! The rest room is also open for customers. We can't go to any other Asian market for Japanese food anymore. This place is way too awesome! If you are looking for Japanese stuff, this is only where I seriously recommend out of all the places I've been to!

Google
To all you haters who have negative comments about this store ... my family and I like this store, above all the other stores! Your complaints about the aisles being too narrow ... lose some weight! Be happy the store is not in Japan or any of the Asian countries. The Asian shops are smaller. But the customers are smaller and slimmer than most of our overweight citizens in CONUS. I have never witnessed or experienced any discrimination. We are in an interracial marriage too. Prices may be a bit higher, but they are worse at the other stores. Overseas it's cheaper in some items, but they do not pay overseas taxes or subject to shipping costs. Personally we appreciate you staying away! That enables my family, friends and I to continue shopping there without friction from your kind.

Google
We lived near Tokyo for about 4 years and adored every minute. Exploring this tiny shop was a real treat that triggered wonderful memories. If you are looking for a place to get your Nippon fix, this is the place for you.

Google
✨The✨best✨prices✨ in San Antonio for authentic Japanese food & goods. Very similar to mom and pop shops of the Japanese countryside or urban back streets. Frozen Japanese staples like natto and Japanese sweets, Japanese snacks, tea, rice, some vegetables, sauces, spices, and even seeds to grow your own Japanese vegetables.

Google
Cute, quaint, and affordable Japanese market. A variety of ingredients and snacks. Nice selection of sauces and sakes. Took me a while to go, initially, since it's a little hidden, but I go every few weeks now. Highly recommended for fans of Japanese food and culture.

Google
Solid grocery store converting all the Japanese grocery essentials. They carry all forms sauce, many varieties of short and medium grain rices (I had trouble finding long grain), curries, and noodles. Their snack section also carries a few fun items to try. Be sure to keep your eye out when you drive up because they're a bit tough to see from the street.

Yelp
May not look like much from the outside, but this small store is packed with your Japanese cooking essentials you'll need in your kitchen. Reasonably priced too. I scored some Japanese curry mixes, a bag of calrose rice, shrimp chip snacks, mochi, sweet rice flour, and tonkotsu broth. A bit of a drive for me, but worth it!

Yelp
A small, old looking building with Japanese items inside. Reminds me of the old places that you could go and get candies and snacks. This might be one of the only places to get Japanese pickles and other Asian snacks. They had musubi at the counter but since I came pretty late, I had no idea how long it was out there. It was just in a case at room temperature. They might be part of the really good tasting Tokyo Inn that is right next door. Parking was good and it's a place to visit for sure if you are craving some Japanese items.

Yelp
Excellent quality of products and service. Prices are decent and the staff is extremely kind. Definitely worth the visit.

Yelp
First time coming here with my kids. This is a super small Asian store that sells a lot of things that I can't find in Bryan College Station so it was nice and convenient for me. The prices are either reasonable or cheap. Whenever we're in San Antonio again, we'll definitely stop by again. They also have a sushi joint next door that only opens for dinner. Cashier is friendly and professional. Small parking lot. Building looks old and a bit rundown.

Liz V.

Yelp
Thought I'd bump into a big grocery store but as their store name says it's a 'mart'. Not a lot of things but there are some noodles that I don't see in other Asian store. Clean quiet ambience & a lot of Japanese food utensils. It's ok. Wish they have more stuff though.

Yelp
Wonderful place! I went with my bf and I found a lot of great japanese food. They have a lot of food like rice, udon, noodles, pocky, and even bowls and glassware. Will be coming back! Great prices too!

Yelp
Such good snacks. Friendly people at the counter. Cute little grocery shop. I buy out their stock of aloha drinks everytime I go.

Yelp
こんにちは! Tune in Tokyo Mart! This place is a pretty great Japanese grocery store. It's across the parking lot from Niki's Tokyo Inn sushi restaurant, so you know it's legit. This place is San Antonio's oldest Japanese market, so it's a bit run down and dustier than the newer Japanese markets in town. However, the prices are much better than the competition! Admittedly, the selection is not as varied as the other market, but check out these prices. I tried out my Japanese on the clerk, and got some giggling, but not much else. They didn't seem to know much Japanese beyond "Hello" and "Thank you." I was a bit disappointed that she didn't know of or have any resources to help with Japanese language study, but that's not her role at a grocery store. I did notice a shelf of Japanese literature by the register, which seems like a book exchange where you can get some cheap literature. I asked if they had any Manga or Anime in there, and the clerk said they don't carry that stuff, it's all trashy Japanese romance novels in there. The frozen stuff seemed like it was still fresh, and not all freezer burned. They seem to go through a good amount of stock, so the stuff isn't all out of date, it's fresh merchandise. The merchandise trends towards serious cooks and food prep in the Japanese way, instead of fun crazy stuff that's more for kids or such. The shelves are well stocked, and the prices are clearly displayed. Parking was easy with a dedicated lot that is shared with the sushi restaurant off of Hildebrand. Niki's next door is worth checking out too!

Yelp
Great selection of snacks, including but not limited to pocky, mochi, meji chocolates, and some frozen taiyaki that you can heat up in the oven. They also have both ceremonial and culinary grade matcha. Overall a solid spot for Japanese snacks.

Yelp
I've been going here for years! One of my favorite places to shop, and it's only a mile away from my house which is awesome!

Yelp
I love this market! I am a California transplant and for the longest time was ordering my goods online as I didn't know San Antonio had a Japanese Market. They are always well stocked and I have never found something they didn't have. I don't live in San Antonio so its a bit of a drive so I make sure to stock up while I am there!I think right now is an even more important time to support local mom and pop businesses, so they are still here when we need and want them.

Michael B.

Yelp
It's all we have in San Antonio. That has so many of the authentic items from Japan if you like bread definitely get some milk bread.

Yelp
Stopped in here on the way south to get some supplies for my hot and sour soup. The lady inside was nice and helped me find some black vinegar. They had a limited selection of products compared to other Asian markets I frequent. Their prices were pretty steep, $4.95 for an 8oz can of straw mushrooms. Simple place.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Very cute place, has some good asian foods and even some sanrio items! I definitely recommend this place and the workers are very nice.

Otacon ..

Yelp
The Onigiris here are amazing! Get the Bonito ones! A nice, little selection of Japanese staples, they have everything you need to make perfect rice. They also own the restaurant next door, very good sushi! It's kinda tucked away but that only makes it more magical.

Yelp
When I lived and worked in San Francisco and Berkeley I had the luxury of hopping on the Geary bus and going to Japantown. I was spoiled: four blocks of Japanese stores and restaurants. It was possible to find all manner of things, my favorites being exotically packaged goods for all kinds of occasions. There was also a huge bookstore called Kinokuniya Bookstore. It carried Japanese stationery items and pens. I can't do that in San Antonio. There is no Japan Town Mall, so this little store is where I go if I need something. It's a small store but it has a decent selection of items (for San Antonio anyway). If you are looking for a special gift for someone who loves odd items this could be the place to go. The cashier does not wear a kimono. She is not even Japanese. But she is always helpful.

Chebo A.

Yelp
Great selection of awesome snacks and treats!!! We loved the items we purchased and would recommend it. Can't wait to go back

Moises O.

Yelp
This place looks a little worn and I was apprehensive about going in to purchase food items. Nonetheless, and because I was desperately looking for a fresh white miso paste, I took a deep breath and walked in. The store is small but if you're an Asian foodie cook, this place is for you! Again, the place is older but it's clean and the attendants are super helpful and friendly. I was amazed at the options of sauces, noodles, mixes, frozen items, etc... and guess what?, I now have an amazing favorite fresh miso paste! Since my initial visit, I have gone back multiple times and every time I visit, I leave with a bagful of delicious new adventures and a huge smile knowing the ones I cook for, will soon share in the culinary treasures and my smile! By the way, overall, it's affordable.

Yelp
Still my go to place , for years it has always been consistent and the young lady who is helpful is still there and always accommodating

Yelp
The original Japanese store of San Antonio, this place has certainly seen some better days. But it's a great place to visit if you want to avoid the congestion of Minnano Mart. You'll find a number of the same items at this store, although there are admittedly much fewer items. But it's nice to have space to walk around and shop, so I think it's worth a visit.

Yelp
TM has gotten a few bento box choices as well. Most of them are girly and the one I saw that a dude could probably get (without losing any masculinity) was a huge honkin one that could fit the kitchen sink in it... ok, I exaggerate but so what.. you're missin my point. LOL They got 'em!
google avatar

Yelp
This tiny hidden gem has all kinds of authentic Asian delights and things I'd never even heard of. It's super awesome to explore.

Yelp
Nice little store and a good selection of Japanese basic products. The building itself I have to say is not inviting from the outside. I guess it's an old neighborhood and has a lot of run down buildings but overall not bad but not great. If I'm ever in the area I will pick something up from here but I would rather stick to the other Japanese market as it's closer to where I live and more aesthetically pleasing with more of a selection.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
This market is so tiny, but it's packed with a variety products. I was looking for Natto and found a bunch of different brands! I'd highly recommend checking this place out!

Mike M.

Yelp
My mother has been coming here for years. She passed 5 years ago and now I go in her place:) They are always extremely friendly and helpful. I called a few times and they put what I wanted away to ensure that it was available later that day. Great customer service!
google avatar

Julie S.

Yelp
Love this place. It's small but most everything Japanese I need is there and at very good prices. Very friendly service and accommodating. I wish they were closer to my house but worth it to get what I need.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't listen to Google, they are open every day except for Mondays when the owner delivers groceries to Corpus Christi and goes fishing! Open from 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM

Yelp
My wife is Japanese and we frequent Tokyo Mart, Minano Mart, and Tim's Oriental Market. Each store has its pros and cons. The following is what my wife likes about Tokyo Mart: The #1 reason my wife likes Tokyo Mart is their used Japanese book selection. The books range in price from .50 to about $1.50. The books are from famous writers and many are best sellers. She states that Minano Mart's books are fewer the author's are unknowns. The #2 reason is that they have many different anko manju (bean paste and mochi snacks). Additionally, the price is better than Minano Mart. While Tokyo Mart is a smaller and older store, my wife prefers it to any other Japanese store in San Antonio for it's variety of good books, selection of anko manju, and price.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over a decade. It never occurred to me to write a review just because Yelp didn't exist at the time when this place took most of my money. This is a good place to peruse if you're just curious. They have a lot of interesting little trinkets, mugs, figures, rice bowls and such at reasonable prices (I have no qualms about paying $3.50 for a well made rice bowl). They also have a good selection of mochi in their refrigerators and intriguing snacks on their shelves. Ten years later, I'm cooking more often and watching my carb intake so I bypass the mochi and snacks. This allows me to see the light and recognize that in terms of cooking basics, they have pretty much everything that would need if you wanted to start cooking Japanese food. I was on a misson yesterday for Yamaki anchovy soup bags since I've only been able to find and buy them once in the Austin. Another bonus is that the prices here are cheaper than the Asian markets I'm use to going to in Austin (bonito @ TM: $4, bonito in Austin: $7). It makes sense that they would have a lot of cooking goods since they supply Niki's Tokyo Inn right next door. Overall, this is a great place to kill time if you're just curious, and most definitely if you're looking for a missing ingredient in your Japanese cooking.

Yelp
I like this place. I have to admit, I was wary of making the trip because I checked out the few pictures online, the place is smallish and the building is older. I was all "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" and out of sheer desperation, I made the trip. Wow, am I glad. They are small. But there are things here I can't get without a) bothering relatives to send stuff directly from Japan or 2) order online and WAIT. (nooooooooooooooo!!!) The selection is still pretty decent, and I really like the staff. There's all kinds of stuff that isn't what I consider touristy or caters to the cutesy-geared-towards-foreigners kind of stuff. Good selection of candy and snackages, including an unnamed confection I haven't seen since I was a kid living in Japan back in the 70's - 80's - no, I am not telling you what it is, because then there will be a huge rush on the stuff and then there will be no more for me. And I truly love this stuff. This was as good as currency in school. ("and she won't tell us what it is?!!? you cry - to which I answer 'NOPE" and you quietly call me a name that would be caught by profanity filters) It's small, it's hidden back off the street, and the floors creak like old houses do. It's awesome. Go.

Al G.

Yelp
The only place I go to for my Japanese groceries. The store itself is small, but the shelves are full and they usually have everything I want at a reasonable price.

Humberto S.

Yelp
Tokyo mart is in my neighborhood. I enjoy their teas. The lady at the counter very helpful and nice. Older and less inexpensive that other Japanese stores in San Antonio. An asset to San Antonio.

Yelp
Great place to check out. I will come back again and buy as much food here. I came for a bamboo whisk and left with more then I expected. I would recommend to friends and family. Thumbs up!

K O.

Yelp
I've been coming here for 25 yrs. I'm half Japanese. Born and raised in Japan and totally bias. They have everything I want or need....brand name products to cook authentic Japanese meals....and all if g he picked things I love to eat.
google avatar

Phil H.

Yelp
I did not expect SA to be the mecca of all things Japanese. However, Tokyo satisfies the yen for Nihonshokuhin. Decent selection of basic Japanese ingredients and some vegtables like burdock, kabocha, and satsumaimo. While it would rate a 3 stars elsewhere, here it get 4 stars.
google avatar

Hatori M.

Yelp
It is a really small place. At first, i didnt even realize it was a grocery mart. They have a lot of the basic japanese grocery fare. It is fairly cheap.
google avatar

Erica R.

Yelp
Love this place. Very little things I am looking for that they don't have. Tomato pretzels is the only thing I can't find. So if I could rate them, 4.8.
google avatar

GeeNah C.

Yelp
Protect your checkbook! The snacks here will consume your budget for food this month. And this is before you get to the utensils and condiments. My kids love the Sakura moshi, sadly frozen but tasty. Try to avoid the candy, get the staples first otherwise you got home with $30 of sweets and no real food. The sesame seed grinder has become a fixture in our home. The freshly ground seeds are a perfect alternative to salt at the table.
google avatar

Keith S.

Yelp
Not a bad little shop, has some of a good collection of items and I would probably go back at some time since of the Japanese markets I have been to locally it does seem to be closer to me than another one.

M G.

Yelp
So glad to have a place like this just around the corner! I like to cook, so I was glad to see it was not just a bunch of Japanese-brand junk food which is what I have experienced in small Japanese marts in other large cities. There's a good selection of basic Japanese staples that can be surprisingly difficult to find in your run-of-the-mill "Asian" food market. Lots of different rice and noodles (soba, udon, somen, ramen, etc), rice vinegar, shoyu, large vats of pure sesame oil, mirin, sake, instant dashi, kombu, bonito flakes, shiitake, miso, konnyaku and shirataki, umeboshi, green tea, sesame seeds, mochi, nori, wakame, etc. etc. Their prices were fantastic compared to what you'd find at a Whole Foods, and better selection of Japanese products than Tim's. Also saw some kabocha and burdock and some sad-looking enoki mushrooms. Mostly everything is in good shape, and there is nice range of quality/price points for most products which I appreciate. I also saw some seed packets on the wall for some interesting-looking herbs; perhaps will try growing some shiso in the future!
