I Visited Bermuda and Never Went to the Beach—Here’s Why an Off-season Trip Is Worth It

"A centuries-old tavern originally built in 1652 as a private home that retains many historic features; the rustic, timeworn atmosphere gives diners a sense of the island’s past, and the restaurant has hosted celebrities and royalty, making it a memorable choice for dinner." - Skye Sherman Skye Sherman Skye Sherman is a travel writer based in West Palm Beach, Florida. "A warren of rooms make up this cozy restaurant that some claim is the oldest on the island. The building itself was originally a private waterside home constructed in 1652—some 40 years after the first English settlers arrived to Bermuda —and it has operated as restaurant for more than a century. The name comes from the married Irish poet who lived here and spent his days on Bermuda composing love poems to local women. However, don’t let the tavern in the name fool you: The cuisine and vibe here is haute, and the menu showcases French influences on island favorites, as well as traditional Bermuda fish chowder and grilled meats; if they're listed on the day's menu, the soufflés are a must-try. There’s no longer exactly a dress code (the emphasis is on "elegant casual"), but like everything in Bermuda, it is best to err on the side of formal."

Absolutely delicious food and great atmosphere! We were a group of 4 and started with salads. The spinach salad with goat cheese, beets and pancetta was wonderful and so pretty on the plate. My dad had the special, a water melon and feta salad. Also very tasty and pretty! For dinner, my mom had a pasta special with home made Italian sausage, my dad had the salmon, my husband had the duck, and I had the scallops special. They were all amazing (scallops were the best though!). We shared two souffles for desert, one of each flavor. Also fabulous, but chocolate seemed to be the favorite of the two. Overall great experience and wonderful food!

This is one of the best and classiest restaurants I’ve ever visited. Not only was the service exceptional, and the waiters friendly, but the food was delicious and presentable. The restaurant is historic and lives up to its name. The menu is not long and confusing and it’s easy to select the meal you want. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone

We had a truly amazing experience at dinner last night. From the time Bruno greeted us at the door until the time we left the service was friendly and professional. Having dined at many fine restaurants nothing compares to what we experienced. The food from the Ceasar salad to start till we ended with a chocolate soufflé- was incredible. Bruno and his staff take pride in everything they do!!!!! Thanks for a great time and look forward to seeing you on our next trip to Bermuda.

Excellent. Delicious food, wonderful service and a super cozy atmosphere. I had escargot, then an arugula salad with Stilton and walnuts. My husband had scallops, then lamb ragú pasta, followed by chocolate soufflé. It was all really yummy. Not inexpensive, but worth it!

Tom Moore's Tavern is perhaps the best fine dining experience to be had in Bermuda, and that's saying a lot. The location can trace its roots to the 1600s making it something of an institution by itself. We ordered the Bermuda fish chowder and mussels as appetizers. I take pride in the mussels I prepare at home - these were otherworldly and highly recommended. Our main courses were salmon, and the catch of the day (tuna). Both were delicious! We finished with dessert which was equally delightful.

It starts with the incredibly witty and funny Italian maître d’. It then evolves to some brilliant appetizers and entrées. And then concludes with one of the better soufflés I have had. The white tablecloth service is impeccable and you can feel the hundreds of years of history as you eat the delicious food. A definite must if you are on the island of Bermuda
