Furano's accommodation is relatively expensive, compared to Ashikawa, even though the latter is the second largest city in Hokkaido. I had stayed in 2 hostels in Asahikawa before arriving in Furano, so the differences in the standards of the hostels were palpable. I chose Hostel Tomar as it is within walking distance to the JR station, and shared the ground floor with the tourist information and a cafe, which makes it look modern. The sitting area for the hostel cafe is large and cozy. The staff are generally friendly and internationally mixed. The shared shower rooms are clean but had a sewage smell in the morning. The kitchen is small with only one basin for washing and the kitchen towels disarranged. On the way to the rooftop bar, one passes by areas stacked with unused items. Upon reaching the rooftop bar, the lights were dim, and if I hadn't turned on the torch light, I could have fallen over the steps.
