Great experience here after coming from an Asia trip, I’m a huge fan of the Japanese culture and to try some things I haven’t before was interesting. I tried my first mackerel here too! The small plates are affordable and it allows you to order variety, my favourite was the tongue and mackerel. Got a good bang for our buck here and they have lunch specials 😉 I love the fish tank display that shows on the outside of the store, we had a knowledgeable older gentleman who just understood the vibe! He also gave good recs, cosy spot for a date night. Oh and Jasmine tea on arrival!!

Honestly, I have never eaten Chinese / Japanese food like at Tomo. It is a place where you feel like you are physically transported to the Far East. A warm and welcoming atmosphere with attentive and very kind staff. Chef David is a character who will remain in your memory for his friendliness and for the preparation of delicious authentic dishes with absolutely genuine and fresh ingredients.

We were the first customers of the day and got some jasmine tea after being seated. We went for the lunch special and it was delicious. I like the style of the restaurant. The staff is friendly and I would highly recommend this place for authentic Japanese food.

Great food, lovely setting and good service! Definitely will be going back. We had the veg & prawn dim sum, the reloaded sushi ,salmon sashimi. and the tofu. All of which was incredible. The complimentary tea was also fab

The place is cosy and the service is very good. The food... well not bad per se, but too sweet for my taste and somehow unorthodox: the misso soup was tasty, but I would not expect to find mushrooms in it, for example. The waitress has assured me that their chef was Japanese and as I kept finding the food more Korean inspired (added sugar and so on), I asked another waiter from which part of Japan was their chef, as I became more and more curious about the food style. "Oh, but he is Chinese!" was the reply. As I said the food is not bad if you like it sweet, but if you want a more authentic experience, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Your server sucked. Whilst the food was good and rather pricey.... he started out ok.. as the night grew on, he lost it... and even jokingly said "good riddance" as we left. Please hire requisite people who know how to deal with a big family. Almost ruined my sisters birthday dinner. We were 17 in total and a hefty spend indeed. Possibly, we should have had 2 waiters assisting this large group. Oh... and the food was served 'as the chef managed to cook it. "... he said. So I literally got my mains 35 minutes after most of the family was long done eating.... it was tempura prawn sushi. As I said the food was really good. But it's become an afterthought given his micro aggression.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the Japanese food was. There are some things I prefer done differently, like miso soup—I really enjoy it the traditional Japanese way. Nonetheless, the soup was hot and quite satisfying. I finished everything, which means it was very good, even though I just had a red cappuccino and muffin. You should give it a try. Bree Street is famous for its many great restaurants, and I’m sure this is one of them.

walked past here today. Last time I had Toro was many years ago. They had some. limited. made it priority to come back. The owner greeted me between 3-5pm when they were closed. had a few simple items. in a nutshell: my new FAV restaurant in Cape Town! half the price, same quality as others who claim to be the best. this is authentic.
