11 Best Bars in Dublin | Condé Nast Traveler

"Toners is said to be the only spot where W.B. Yeats would occasionally imbibe. In the main space, there are weathered partitions along the length of the bar, giving you a sense of privacy as you perch on your cushioned leather stool. There’s also a fairly sizable beer garden out the back, which is heavenly on sunny days and heated on the colder ones. The bar stocks a nice selection of spirits, including some good gins—goblets of Bombay Sapphire and tonic will keep you going for a while—as well as local beer." - Nicola Brady

Arrive in Dublin on Sunday and what do you do? Have a drink in a few bars maybe? Toners was one such place. A bit of an Irish institution. Crazily busy but still found a table. On the surface it’s mad. But boy is it well run. Table service works brilliantly so no waiting. Nice pint or two of Guinness ( read the sign) Smithies red ale was also a great pint. Nice music going on and a wonderful atmosphere. Would I go back? You bet I would 😁🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇮🇳 Recommended 😁

Want to get a feel for a local pub in Dublin - this is your spot. Pub has a lot of character, huge heated outdoor seating ( Toner’s Yard). Great place to hang out with friends and a few pints.

Google
Toners is one of the coziest and most authentic pubs in Dublin — perfect for a relaxed afterwork pint. They don’t serve food, but the great thing is you can bring your own. Right across the street is Cirillo’s, one of the best Italian pizzerias in town. Great Guinness, warm lighting, wooden tables, and that timeless pub charm you just can’t fake

Ronnie Campbell

Google
Really cool spot in a great area of dublin. Classic pub inside, with a nice courtyard that is covered in the back. Very lively and a good crowd. Lots of spots to sit, but does get quite busy.

Stopped in before a rugby match at the Aviva. It was packed, but the service was excellent so no long wait. Staff were very efficient. Great atmosphere.

Google
Great Irish Pub. They don't make them any better l promise. They certainly know how to make the Guinness flow!

Google
Toners is a great spot, especially if you're looking for a lovely beer garden to relax in. The bar itself is a bit of a walk, but once you're there, it's worth it. One thing I'd love to see improved is the food situation – while they have online menus for a nearby pizza place on the tables, you have to pick up the food yourself, which feels a bit inconvenient. The prices are on the higher side too; I paid €7.80 for a pint of Guinness, which feels a bit steep. That said, it's still a good place overall with a great vibe, especially if you want to enjoy a drink in the beer garden.

Google
Unfortunately they have an old bar man who absolutely ruins the vibe. The pub is great and always good craic despite the absolutely miserable sod. I see from other reviews it's a common complaint though. I'll probably never darken the door again because there's plenty more pubs in Dublin just like it without a sour auld bar man ruining it

Yelp
Joint is a relic and many of the old aspects of the bar are still intact! I would go for a pint just to check out the old bar. Service was a bit dry but who cares when the joint was founded in 1734! If you don't like it, theres like 3 other pubs within a stones throw. Must stop for a true pub enthusist! talk later

Yelp
Was in smoking area with friends for a birthday, and due to the bar outside being very busy i went inside to ask for a pint. The bar tender was incredibly aggresive and refused to serve me because i needed to order from the smoking area bar. When i explained this was more convenient he said fuck off and hed kick me out. Horrible person and place. Only 2 stars cause good guinness

Yelp
Not if you paid me , would I go back into this bar , what does it cost to be nice , hello , thank you , again give me Donahues any day of the week.Right down the street.

Yelp
Best pint of Guinness I had in Dublin!!! I never knew that a pint could taste so different from one pub to the next. Guinness is a very temperamental beer and Toners knows how to treat it! The bartender has been pouring pints for about 25yrs at Toners. He was very friendly and allowed me to sample a few other beers as I drank my Guinness. Toners is a blast from the PAST! It has been around for a few hundred years and the decor has not changed. It is a very relaxing place to enjoy a beer and chat. The beer garden was under remodeling when I visited but it was still nice. Very large and open space. I would love to see it when remodeling is all done. This was my first stop for a True pint of Guinness!

Yelp
Another pub that you will most definitely visit if you are doing the twelve pubs of christmas along the Baggott Mile. I like this pub mainly because I am a fan of the Snug, there is nothing like being in a crowded pub but you have your own individual space to move around in. Upstairs is a function room that I have not heard many people talk about. its really good if you are looking to hire a space (for free i might add) to have a little private party for whatever occasion you can think of! Make one up and invite all your friends i say!

Yelp
Toners is a mix a many kind of business in the same venue, in the front pub you will find a traditional pub, in the backyard a big beer garden and in the first floor a venue with different proposals like parties and dance floor. It is really interesting that everything in under the same pub, it looks like the owner is working hard to open the pub to new business options. Good for a pint after work and if you are lucky and the weather is nice outside. It is a pity that there is no bar in the beer garden.

Yelp
Just one of those lovely old fashioned gems - aehmmm - pubs in basically the middle of town. Quite small so I had it before that we didn't make it in. Another time we got our hands on their famous snug - which for the right reasons is famous - just lovely. This time I came with a friend after an exhibition opening around the corner for a few pints. It was a Thursday evening so it was busy but not overcrowded. The only thing I noticed at some stage that for quite some time I was the only female in there. But that didn't feel strange - it was just the way it was.

Yelp
I used to really like Toners and would have recommended it a lot. I was there on Friday night, and they have a bouncer on a power trip. He wouldn't let me return to the bar after being outside even though my bag with all my money, phone, cards was inside. This really upset me as I was then on my own and couldn't reach my friends. When I tried to go back in to get my things he grabbed me. I am now left with bruises on my arm. I won't be returning again. I would advise everyone else to go to any of the other bars on Baggot Street as they are all more welcoming.

Yelp
Was I the only person who didn't know about the beer garden out back in Toner's... Dam! This is pub offers everything you expect of a traditional irish pub, so old this place oozes character and their front of bar snug is the perfect example... I once managed to bag it and it is definitely a gem; now don't expect luxury, we're taking about good ole tranditional irish pub, unmatched, old / worn seating that has stood the test of time and what's an old bar without some dust; it's an important ingredient.. ha ha! Ok, out back there is this roughly put together beer garden which ok, no frills but it's a gem, people come from everywhere and this place, evening and on a summers day doesn't be busting at the seams with people, it's hugely popular which brings a great atmosphere to the place and with large screens too, perfect spot to catch the spot

Yelp
James Toner or simply Toners as it's known is one my favourite Dublin pubs, because it doesn't have to try to be a grand pub, it just is. With not a hint of phony nostalgia, it's genuinely traditional, the bar tariff is one of few things to have changed in years! On the subject of the prices, happily you're far enough down Baggot street here to stretch your euros a little further. In the evenings the downstairs bar appealing to younger Dubs, comes into it's own. I've always found the staff here fast & friendly. In the 1950's & 60's this pub was popular with local Baggot Street Bard Patrick Kavanagh who came here with a thirst on him to rival his nearby beloved Grand Canal. Although apparently W B Yeats before him could only be tempted with a solitary sweet sherry! It's not really on the tourist trail, and refreshingly most weekday daytimes, the sounds you'll hear are of voices & glasses, with an atmosphere that doesn't have to rely on Leona Lewis warbling her way through "Run" on the juke box, or for that matter relentless "diddly-dee", (not that I don't care for a spot of diddly-dee music in the right place & live). So if you're looking for either a nice place for a drink & a chat in the daytime or for getting euphoric with your euros with mates in the evening this is you're man!

Yelp
A classic Irish pub, unchanged in many years, apart from the addition of extra toilet facilities and the excellent beer garden with heating and TVs. A great spot for catching any sporting event and favoured by many Irish legends, historical and current. It's on the circuit for many visiting celebrities too, Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd and many more performing artists can occasionally be seen here, enjoying the legendary Guinness. "The best pint of Guinness in Dublin" is quoted from Rory Guinness and hangs over the door. I'd be very close to agreeing, but that argument will never end.

Yelp
This place has the coolest beer garden in town. I wouldn't have thought of myself as seeking out a place with outdoor seating in wet and cold Dublin, but really, it's worth it. They have heaters all over the place so it makes it okay. Every time I come here, it's pretty packed, but not in an annoying can-barely-move-getting-pushed way, but just the right amount of people. They have waiters coming to take drink orders, as the bar is inside and you need to go around from outside to get to the inside. The location is pretty good too, as it's close to other places you can go to after.

Yelp
I'd not reviewed Toners? Yelp, you having a giraffe? I need to sort this out. One of the first pubs, if not the first pub, I socialised in with work when I first started working in Dublin. It was and remains the quintessential Dublin pub. The main bar is dark with stained wood and panelling. Upstairs is a brighter second bar, which can be used for events and parties. Put down a 60 EUR deposit and you can hire it for free. Out the back is Toners newest attraction. One of the best beer gardens in Dublin. Now there is no bar, but there is a team of floor staff that do table service. The last part of my hen party was in here and the staff served us well, very well indeed. I definitely recommend Toners. A Dublin institution.

Yelp
Their claim of having the best pint of Guinness is pretty hard to dispute. At present, only M. O'Briens has a comparable pint. However, the atmosphere at Toner's Pub is far more authentic. This is a legitimate Irish pub that serves up outstanding pints of Guinness without fuss or pretense. One gets the sense that the barkeeps here are nearly as old as some of the well worn furniture. Speaking of which, this is the first (and so far only) place I have seen that creates little booths at the bar. This creates a sense of privacy, while still allowing easy access to the barkeep and another perfect pint of Guinness

Yelp
Amazing staff, the friendliest in Dublin I would easily say. Excellent beer and great service. The clientele were lovely also, thirties and above was our experience. The place was really busy as Ireland were playing rugby that day. I will definitely go back. Its very authentic and very Irish. Full of locals.

Ron M.

Yelp
Best pint of Guinness in Dublin! My family and I stopped in early in the day and it was great. The gentleman behind the bar was a little busy with someone checking inventory, but had time for us. Toners pub is what you think of when you think of an Irish pub. It is small, dark and full of character. Definitely worth stopping in!
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Toners is a very authentic, traditional pub. We were there in the afternoon and it was quiet and had a great atmosphere. The bartender was friendly and welcoming. Sad that I did not know about the beer garden out back.
google avatar

Melanie M.

Yelp
Toner's is a really lovely unchanged Victorian Bar and pub with traditional snug! The pub is old and worn and it is wonderful and a great thing that the owners haven't changed and gone down the modernisation road that lots of these old Victorian pubs in this area of town have succumbed to and not successfully either. This is the pub in which W.B Yeats had his one and only drink in a Dublin pub brought here by his friend Oliver St John Gogarty. Check out the really old drawers and beer pump handles still on display and used today!

Yelp
A great place for a night out with the lads. All of its furniture is very old if not ancient and completely authentic. It is the real Irish-Pub experience that so many places worldwide and even in Dublin try to copy. Toners has places in Temple Bar that are attempting to be like it but these are full of tourists and stag/hen parties. While some pubs in Temple Bar (perhaps named after famous friends of Y.B. Yeats) charge up to €7.50 for a pint, the cost of the drink in Toners is fairly normal, for Dublin that is. About €5 a pint. Toners is the real deal and although full every night it is full of Dublin folk out for the night.

Yelp
We came here the other day to try to get into the free Shaggy concert (why not??). Of course it was packed at the time, but behind all the people milling about it was a really small, classy pub. When we eventually got into their courtyard at the back where the concert was going on, it was also packed but a cute little area to enjoy a pint. Of course, it definitely would have a different vibe sans all the Shaggy-crazed fans, but I had a good feeling about it!

Yelp
I held a charity event here. I paid a 60 euro deposit which I was told I would get back. At the end of the night, the manager refused to give it back to me even though I was promised it back, and also, it was taking money away from a children's non profit charity. He had no grounds to take the children's money as the room was left in perfect condition and clean. He then told me to go '****' myself. He swore at me numerous times. We were also charged more for drinks than the register would ring up. Disgraceful place. Also the toilets were filthy.

Yelp
Where did that beer garden come from? I've been coming to Toners for years and out of the blue there's a giant beer garden out the back! Great pint of Guinness here, consistently. Always a good mix of regulars and blow-ins. Great location to start or end a night out as it's easy walking from loads of places (Baggot st., Grafton, Harcourt st., etc.) and no matter how busy it gets the barmen are so old school that you'll always get your turn. Good sign of barmen who know what they're doing. Quality.

Ciara K.

Yelp
Toner's is a beautiful old Victorian pub, with all the original pub paraphernalia from down through the years scattered around the place. There are so many Dublin pubs that buy this antique pub stuff by the barrow full, and sometimes they aren't even genuine antiques at all, but in Toner's you can be guaranteed that the furniture, Guinness pumps, old photographs etc are all genuine. (I read an article recently in which the journalist described a visit to a warehouse selling such "antiques" BY THE SQUARE METRE. There's definitely something wrong with that). The floors are stone, the furniture worn and wooden, and there's a cosy snug partitioned off by giant mirrors.
google avatar

Christian P.

Yelp
Beer, which by the way is amazing, can be enjoyed outside in there beer garden, in which you can easily fit in a balkan wedding. Great place to go an grow odd thoughts about the society, while you enjoy a beer with some friends at one of the October-fest inspired tables. There is also a small couch/lounge area to claim for early birds.
google avatar

Kate D.

Yelp
I'm a little biased about Toner's because it's actually where my parents met back when they were a young engineer and a young nurse working in Dublin. Still, I can see why they were feeling romantic; this is a gorgeous, classic Dublin pub. Dark, old-fashioned, divided bar seats, a proper snug inside the door, good barmen, and a FANTASTIC pint of Guinness; it's kind of an institution. I cheesily took my boyfriend here on our first Valentine's Day (I didn't tell him about the parents thing, didn't want to totally freak him out!) and he was delighted to find it a quiet, comfortable place to lounge over a pint. I haven't experienced the upstairs but it was more than enough to keep me coming back.

Yelp
Been here a few times on various nights. My favourite thing here is the beer garden. It looks really great at night, really spread out and has an undercover bit as well for the rainy nights. The indoor pub is really old school and have attended a function downstairs. It is on the top end of drink prices at 5.60€ a pint. But if you have a large group they will organise some free finger food which is a plus for sure!

Neil M.

Yelp
an old skool, Duberlin pub unchanged thro the rotten years of the Celtic Tiger and the subsequent recession. No airs or graces are expected here; they just wouldnt fit into the environment or be tolerated by most of the staff or customers. The beer garden is supposed to be good but I haven't yet tried it. The pub is located on the tourist-trail-of-pubs ( O'Donaghues, Foleys) and is located across from politico-favored Doneghy & Nesbitts but Toners holds an authentic crowd that the other's lost in the 1990s. I've been known to arrive in here on a Saturday on my lonesome just to experience the place & crowd and have a few words with the staff & some customers. It's one of my favorites.... since I was a teenager.

Brian B.

Yelp
Typical Dublin pub, very lively, exactly what you would want and expect.
google avatar

Rafayel K.

Yelp
An old school pub that serves beer & hard liquor mostly, no cocktails, food or martinis. It's worth checking out on your visit to Dublin. Prices are competitive compared to other Dublin centre pubs. Beer garden is very cozy, but you probably will only enjoy it if you are a smoker. Positive review, but personally old pub feel is just not for me.
google avatar

Fabian T.

Yelp
It's a typical and old fashion irish pub...if you like pubs with history inside it and where guinness is great quality, you should go for a pint. I really enjoyed it this place.
google avatar

Qype User (Grinla…)

Yelp
Non-pretentious, old-fahioned Irish pub. Little to dislike as there is no airs and graces, just good honest beer and atmosphere!
google avatar

Jodie B.

Yelp
Busy! Great atmosphere; absolutely try and get outside into the beer garden (yes, even in march) it's flood lit (not in a horrible artificial football pitch kind of way, more in a crafty arty string lights way) and has massive outdoor heaters. Also great staff buzzing around taking drinks orders and bringing them out to you. Bit funny that to get into the beer garden you have to go through the pub and out into the street but once you've figured out how to get to it the beer garden is definitely the way to go for me! Didn't spend much time inside but seems to have a good vibe going, nice mix of people and great staff. Nice big picnic style tables outside too which I'm sure would be great for a bit of a chilled out afternoon drink or food (didn't see the menu so can't comment on that!)
google avatar

Peter R.

Yelp
Really great pub. Especially the bar area with the booths is something really special if you aren't irish because it is something you haven't seen so far(i guess). Prize for a pint of guinness is 5€.
google avatar

Peter W.

Yelp
Left almost as soon as we arrived. None of the 4 of us were happy with our pints taste-wise. One of my group brought her drink back because there were small specks of dirt floating in it. Bathrooms were dirty and the couches in the smoking area were smelly.

Bryan K.

Yelp
Really nice pub. Large outdoor heated beer garden perfect for relaxing with cigar. Friendly staff.

Nicola B.

Yelp
Very rude middle aged bar man in this pub, doesn't have any customer service skills. I was emailing the events person through the week who told me to call over when ever I liked during the week to see the room in which I wanted to rent out in two months time for a christening. I called in to be treated by a horrible bar man who just brushed me off and said the room is booked even tho the events person told me this morning it wasn't. Very rude wouldn't recommend to anyone.

Karina C.

Yelp
I've been going to Toner's for years and it's one of my favourite Dublin pubs. It's very laid back and the same bartenders have been there for an age. The crowd is always cool and chilled out and nobody is trying too hard to be a poser like in some of the city's other bars! Pints are great - if a little pricer than other places - and there's an upstairs section too for parties. The loos are surprisingly spacious for such a small pub and during the summer they put tables and chairs in the laneway outside, which is a great spot to hang out in. Friday evenings are rocking with people from the nearby offices coming in for after-work drinks. But Saturday nights can be as lively as well.

Thelma L.

Yelp
Probably the worst (ladies) bathrooms in Dublin. Dirty and floors covered in puddles of water (well I hope it was water). Don't wear nice shoes.

Jon N.

Yelp
OK yes, this is clearly on the radar for most tourists, but I think it deserves to be credited for what it is and not punished for its popularity. This bar has a lot of Victorian charm, a friendly barkeep and somehow better tasting Guinness on tap than what I had at the Guinness Storehouse.

Johanna H.

Yelp
Great Guinness. A real old Dublin pub with original character. And the beer garden out the back is a great suntrap on a fine day.
