James Toner or simply Toners as it's known is one my favourite Dublin pubs, because it doesn't have to try to be a grand pub, it just is. With not a hint of phony nostalgia, it's genuinely traditional, the bar tariff is one of few things to have changed in years! On the subject of the prices, happily you're far enough down Baggot street here to stretch your euros a little further. In the evenings the downstairs bar appealing to younger Dubs, comes into it's own. I've always found the staff here fast & friendly.
In the 1950's & 60's this pub was popular with local Baggot Street Bard Patrick Kavanagh who came here with a thirst on him to rival his nearby beloved Grand Canal. Although apparently W B Yeats before him could only be tempted with a solitary sweet sherry!
It's not really on the tourist trail, and refreshingly most weekday daytimes, the sounds you'll hear are of voices & glasses, with an atmosphere that doesn't have to rely on Leona Lewis warbling her way through "Run" on the juke box, or for that matter relentless "diddly-dee", (not that I don't care for a spot of diddly-dee music in the right place & live).
So if you're looking for either a nice place for a drink & a chat in the daytime or for getting euphoric with your euros with mates in the evening this is you're man!
