Some positives, some negatives...sadly wouldn't stay again because of the latter.
My Premier Double room was spacious, with a very comfy armchair. The bed itself was good but the pillows were absolutely awful (the worst I've experienced in decades of hotel stays), really flat with no bounce whatsoever. Even with 6 of them to arrange in different ways I just couldn't make myself a comfy place to rest my head, and now have a very stiff neck.
My sleep was also impacted by the lack of curtains on the 2 big windows. The blinds are ill-fitting and let light in at the sides. I resorted to hanging clothes up on hooks on window frames to block some of the sunlight! The blinds are attractive but the room needs curtains too!
Staff service also failed to impress... In the morning I made a coffee but then decided to leave drinking it until after breakfast (I like it cold as well as hot, especially in this weather!). I also made a herbal tea with my own teabag, and deliberately left that to steep till later on, with purpose of it aiding my digestion). On my return from breakfast a short while later I discovered that my room had been serviced (no issue there, I had forgotten to put a Don't Disturb on door).
I was then rather gobsmacked to see that the housekeeping staff had thrown my drinks away (I had left full mugs) and washed the mugs! Perhaps I could have excused that if it had been later and they had thought I'd headed out for the day, but this occurred during breakfast time! In my opinion though they shouldn't touch things like that left by guests. Many people like to drink tea and coffee cold, I don't understand why they thought it was a good idea to chuck out my drinks! Also, I could well have put meds or supplements in these drinks....the staff should surely know to leave these things be!
I realised that a member of housekeeping staff was outside my room at the time so nipped out to ask politely for a couple of extra sachets of coffee. I felt too awkward to mention the beverage disposal but am sure she was aware... She did indeed then give me 2 more sachets, but without any smile or pleasantries.
Her dourness left me feeling a little unwelcome, and this feeling was then magnified on returning to my room and switching on the television... only to discover that she or another member of the housekeeping staff had switched it off at the wall socket whilst I was at breakfast. Not because there was only a single socket and they might have had to use that for a hoover etc... No, there were plenty sockets, but they had very deliberately reached under the table housing the TV and switched it off at the mains. Why, when they knew i was very probably about to return to the room, would that seem a good idea?
That action kind of summed up my time at the Tontine... whilst I had hoped for a heartwarming stay in a privately owned hotel what I actually experienced was a very impersonal and not entirely pleasant couple of nights. I'd love to return to Greenock but would definitely stay elsewhere.
I should mention that breakfast was fine, with a huge Scottish cooked option, enough to satisfy the biggest appetite! I would still, sadly, opt for alternative accommodation on my next visit.
