On the Grid : Eat Mexican Food

"Santana’s, Fresh MXN, Eat MXN Food, the name is always changing, but the food is the same. California burritos and carne asada chips are a couple of our faves, but the most important part of any meal is the chilanga salsa. No matter what you end up ordering, make sure to grab a side of chilanga to go with it!" - LESS+MORE

Google
I paid $11 and some change for a bean, cheese, and rice burrito, which is absolutely insane. I didn’t see a price on the menu either and had to pay after he already made the food. Also served pre packed salsa packets 😂 About as far from fresh as you can get, and for those prices, it better be amazing and it’s very mediocre at best. I know it’s just crappy Mexican fast food and I expect that, but not $11 for some beans, rice and cheese.

Google
I paid $17 for a cali with guacamole. I should of asked for the price over the phone instead of trusting the "menu" on the Google page. I was hoping it would at least be a big burrito but it's actually SMALLER then a normal burrito. The salsa are not in cups like every other Mexican food place, they have packets of salsa. So I need to figure out how to hold the bag of salsa or my drink. Who has bags of salsa?!?!?!? TOTAL RIP OFF!!!

During my recent visit to Tony's Fresh Mexican Food, I had the pleasure of experiencing their fajitas, and I must say, they did not disappoint. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was warm and inviting, capturing the essence of authentic Mexican culture. The fajitas arrived beautifully presented on a plate, a delightful mix of colorful bell peppers, onions, and perfectly seasoned strips of chicken, beef, and succulent shrimp. The aroma was intoxicating, hinting at the rich, smoky flavors to come. Each bite was a harmonious blend of tender meat, juicy shrimp, and crisp vegetables, wrapped in soft, warm tortillas. The accompanying guacamole, sour cream, and salsa were fresh and added the perfect balance of creamy and tangy notes. What truly elevated my dining experience was the exceptional customer service provided by Danna. From the outset, she greeted me with a warm smile and genuine enthusiasm, making me feel right at home. Her knowledge of the menu was impressive, and she offered insightful recommendations. Danna was attentive without being intrusive, and that I had everything I needed to enjoy my meal to the fullest. Danna's professionalism and friendly demeanor made a significant difference, transforming a great meal into a memorable dining experience. If you're looking for delicious fajitas and outstanding service, Tony's Fresh Mexican Food is the place to go. Kudos to Danna and the entire team for their dedication to excellent customer service and high-quality food. I can't wait to return!

Google
Can not stand or use the plastic sealed salsa packets. Horrible flavor and very hard to open while on the move. These are not customer friendly, teeth friendly (opening) and careful opening them in a car, Salsa will be all over you.

Google
Food here is okay. I got the california burrito and it's not the same as it use to be years ago. I would rate the california burrito like a 3/10. It was flavorless and the fries weren't fresh. I also had the Asada Fries and it looked better than it tasted. Id rate that one a 4/10. Im assuming the 5 star reviewers never had real delicious Mexican food, no offense guys. Definitely not worth coming back here.

Google
Now check this out I'll order a carne asada fries twice and the first time I order it I'll give them the benefit of the doubt it was at 2:00 a.m. I was hungry. But when I got it I thought I got a good deal because they overloaded with a bunch of toppings but then I actually tried to eat the fry... it was still raaawww! It was so crunchy and pale I thought I still have to peel the potatoes... I ordered the second time I asked for no beans cuz the beans were super packed the first time I bought it and the fries extra crispy surprise, surprise was so limp that I thought I need bluechew. Also I know my Spanish is not good but I know how to say "Salsa Verde" and every time that I ask for "Salsa Verde" they give me something else I get salsa rojo or salsa ranchereo. Like bruh.. you know what I'll got to the other Mexican spot down the street next time.

Google
Brought my father, visiting from FL, here. He said the pollo asada might just be the best burrito he's ever eaten. I had the carne asada and it was delicious as well! The meat was flavorful and moist. Loved it! Service was excellent as well.

Google
Love this place. Vegetarian and gluten free friendly (not sure if it's suitable for Celiacs). Limited vegan options, but they'll work with you. Rice and beans are vegan. FRESH pico and salsa! Great service!

Yelp
We live nearby and Tony's is our family's choice for Friday night movie night. Great burritos! There was a small mixup with our order that Uber dropped off. Finding no options to contact Uber, we called Tony's. They made it right and delivered a new burrito to us within 10 minutes. I respect a company that makes things right, and along with their great burritos, they happily remain our movie night choice.

Yelp
Decent. Not the best but also pretty darn good if you need Mexican food asap. We get the 1lb the veggie burrito. 10x good as Taco Bell. 30% not as good as Don Tommy's. 100% recommend if looking for midnight burrito. This is the place for a late night burrito for sure. Never gone during the day.
google avatar

Chelsea S.

Yelp
Good food and service, I like the burritos and carve asada fries. Good churros too! That also serve beer on draft.
google avatar

Lynn R.

Yelp
Always excellent food at decent prices and great service with a smile! Clean and well managed and tons of menu options for any craving you're having. Mine happens to always be the rolled tacos smothered in guacamole and sour cream And sprinkled with cheese. The new avocado salsa was right on target. Lettuce was fresh and so was the pico de gallo. My husband always gets his Cali burrito and calls it a day. Green salsa for him. Yum yum!

Yelp
I went to Tony's today and was very happy with the food! I got the carne asada baby tacos and they were very delicious and came with a generous amount of guac which I enjoyed. The service was fast and they were very nice. Definitely will be returning!

Yelp
Great Tony's mix burrito! Huge and very tasty ! Cold beer and flavored salsas! Super friendly staff, food served fast, and the place is pretty clean! 2.7 is definitely unfair to this place! Food, price and quality got me today!

Yelp
Been coming here on and off for the last four years whenever I come down for my fishing trips a few blocks away at Fishermans Landing. It's really hard for me to understand the poor reviews, but I really recommend this place. I found the staff very friendly, service, to be quick, and the food fresh. My personal favorite is the supreme breakfast burrito. But outside of that, I've never had any issues with the other items on the menu.
google avatar

Yelp
12.5.22 Monday morning 7am drove by the place. Turned around and glad I did because I had the pleasure of enjoying the BEST breakfast burrito I've had in my life. We were the only ones in line at the drive through. Service was prompt. We shared one breakfast burrito supreme for $10.49: Supreme Breakfast Burrito Served with eggs, bacon, ham, chorizo, potatoes, cheese, and sour cream. This thing was big, tasty, fresh, cheesy, meaty, and I added a tad bit of the spicy salsa. Wow! It had so many great elements and filled up two hungry adults with a few bites left over. Highly recommend this meal anytime (breakfast served all day too)!

Amanda F.

Yelp
Some of the best churros I've ever had. I'm picky about quesabirria, and their's was phenomenal. The food came out quick and hot and the staff was polite and helpful. If you're looking for something quick or a late night bite for less, this is the place to go.

Yelp
It's been 19 years since the last time I came to this exact place so seeing that it is still a restaurant here I was excited. Even though the meat was bland I still tore up my fries because everything else was very good. My boyfriend had the quesadilla which he said was surprisingly good. Very fast service!
google avatar

Jeff D.

Yelp
Best grilled fish taco around. It's about $7, but it's a generous portion and very tasty. 5 types of salsa available. Burritos are available in 2 sizes, so be sure to tell them if you want the smaller one.

L R.

Yelp
Beware!! I ordered a California Burrito and upon taking my first bite it was a SHRIMP burrito. Thankfully I noticed right away and I always carry my EPIPEN on me. This mistake could have been life threatening. I immediately returned to Tony's to get this figured out.. They did not offer a refund, a whoops or I'm sorry. They just traded my shrimp burrito for the correct one... I had no time to discuss the issue as I immediately was not feeling well. Cali Burrito came like someone threw up in a tortilla. No fries. Just meat gauc and sour cream all jumbled up. Not to mention the meat tasted like it was grilled next to the shrimp/seafood. They also didn't include salsa or napkins in the bag. This is extremely dangerous for someone with a severe allergy. Anaphylactic shock is no joke. The management can directly contact me, but as of right now I am reporting this mistake to the health department.

Jeff S.

Yelp
Service was horrible, my previous visits the food was ok at best, I would go there on my way home from the airport due to convenience, but last time I went in the prices were raised and the quality was completely unacceptable. I generally do not write poor reviews as it is not worth my time to do so. But in this instance I feel my negative review was completely justified.

Marcella B.

Yelp
Corn tortillas had blue ink on them. Could have been mold. Order came out wrong even after I had to say what I wanted 5 times. Food wasn't edible, total waste of money. This place has to be shut down.
google avatar

Pinus D.

Yelp
Terrible, 3 years ago it was occasionally tasty albeit overpriced. Today feb 2024 I had the worst carne asada burrito at $10. Tiny. Tough meat , half cold. Place was empty at lunchtime ( I wonder why ). Never again.
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
Delicious!!!! Got the La Paz burrito with their green sauce and it was perfect La Paz Burrito

Yelp
Norma was friendly and helpful. Good Mexican food and affordable. Clean, delicious, and big portions.

Yelp
Had beef tacos guacamole with chips and everything was bland. I won't be back. Wife had same experience with their chicken tacos.

Yelp
I have lived in Point Loma for years now and every time I order from here, I always tend to regret it.... Cheap ingredients lead to cheap food which tastes like ass-which is this place.... Their drive through speaker never works properly, the orders tend to be messed up and the food has gone downhill over the years.... Good luck, I won't be back..... Tourists come and go but screw your locals over, we never come back.....

Domino S.

Yelp
Terrible breakfast burrito. Not only was it nasty. I told the lady at the window three times I did not want ham in my burrito and I got lots of it in my burrito. There was no line but hey, maybe the phone was distracting her from taking my order correctly. Then had the audacity to ask what sauce I wanted just to not put any of it in the bag.
google avatar

Yelp
** I love places that have good quality-quantity ratio. I have lived in Point Loma for 4 years and can say that Tony's is without a doubt the worst Mexican burrito/restaurant in the county. I have lived by them for years and only go when it is in dire moments...and when I do, it is regrettable every time. $11.52 including tax with no sour cream or guacamole is definitely absurd considering their competitors; Ortiz's, Adalbertos, Robertos. Please go somewhere else! I mean look at the lopsided cheese in my plain burrito . ** ---I wish I could give a zero stars especially because of the customer service aspect on top of everything else---

Yelp
Honestly don't understand the less than 3star review here because this food is delicious! I pulled up in the drive thru at 3am so damn hungry and this place delivered food that saved my life to be honest. Fast service and amazing carne asada fries and big and Flavorful tacos. So glad I came and definitely will be back when I need a late night bite.

Yelp
This place has become a staple for our after work churros. Awesome menu and definitely recommend. Churros are always fresh and perfectly cooked

Yelp
This place almost killed me. Make sure to acknowledge food allergies before ordering. Or else, there will be possible food contamination.

Yelp
Nicest people I've come across at a Mexican restaurant this side of the border! Great prices and open 24/7 too!

Yelp
I usually don't post reviews. After giving Tony's the benefit of the doubt for the last 5 years, I am over it. It has always bothered me that you are forced to buy a drink with any burrito. I don't want to pay for something I don't want, so I end up taking a bottled water, which I don't want. Today, they blew it for the last time. After ordering a Tony's Mix Burrito with carne asada, chicken, bacon, shrimp, exactly as listed on the menu, with no modifications, the person at the window confirmed my order. What I received was a burrito with rice, 6 small shrimp, 3 pieces of chicken and cheese, no carne asada, no bacon and tons of rice. It was really a rice burrito with some shrimp and 3 pieces of chicken. It was $15 for my rice burrito and plastic water bottle. I'm done, goodbye Tony's.

Brian R.

Yelp
I love the La Paz burrito, and their green sauce is probably my favorite in the city.
google avatar

Jaz A S.

Yelp
I thought I'd give a shout out to Tony's because my breakfast burrito was great. I ordered a ham, cheese and egg, easy potatoes with sour cream. Even though they forgot the sour cream, I thought the customer service was good, the prep time was fast and the tortilla was nice and thin... really good quality. The ham was not overly salty ( surprised by that ) and the cheese was real. It wasn't that phoney orange cheese, this was real cheddar! Then to the choice of hot sauce: I highly recommend the traditional red. This is ~not~ the usual watery red every other place throws in your bag, it is really, really good, as is to verde avocado hot sauce. It has a fresh cilantro taste to it, just fantastic! The burrito was about $10 bucks, but welcome to post-covid times people, businesses are lucky to have survived it! I'll be back,...and for more sour cream! Bravoooo!

Yelp
I stopped by this location of Tony's Fresh Mexican Food back in the day when it was a newly opened business. It's a typical 24/7 Mexican joint that serves a large variety of items. During my visit, there was a long line of vehicles in the drive-thru lane, but very few people ordering inside which was good for me as I parked and walked in. The overwhelming number of choices on the menu at these small chains always makes me wonder if they are particularly good at executing a few select items. I chose a La Paz burrito which was their version of a surf and turf (i.e. grilled shrimp and carne asada). The cost was $9.99 which included a soft drink. I thought the burrito was okay, maybe a bit on the dry side. I added some salsa verde to spice up and moisten the ingredients. Three stars was my rating for the quality and portion size.

Megarayqauza

Yelp
The service was amazing and the food was delicious overall 10 out of 10 would come again

Yelp
I don't know what they're all complaining about... had the La Paz (asada and shrimp) burrito and was not disappointed. Staff was nice and place was clean. Smallish space, limited seating, but the grub is good. Everyone in the group gave it a thumbs up!

Yelp
I'm a Point Loma local and go to taco shops frequently. I will not be back to Tony's. I have given it two chances in The last week and both experiences have been less then satisfactory. The burritos were Ok, though they are 25 percent higher than other taco shops in the area. That isn't a reason I wouldn't go back except the food was subpar. Yesterday the burrito they handed be fell apart after I opened the paper . It was if they through all the ingredients in a bag and said have at it. Again this wouldn't be a reason for me not to go back. Both times, the person at the drive up window was less than friendly. She quoted me the wrong order then when I said I didn't' t have a drink, she didn't say a word while I waited for her to fix the bill and I waited and waited and she handed me the credit card statement (which had a service fee added. It is either for using a credit car or for the employees tip. I don't know which. Either way that is a pet peeve of mine. Just add your expenses into the price of the food. Though I guess since they are already high, they want to gouge at a separate place). And then there's a place to leave a tip on the recipe. I'm a former waiter and I always tip well! It's a taco shop. Why are tip lines in here. So all fast food have tip lines. No! I routinely hand $5 to my drive through taco shop employees as they are hustling. I didn't tip and I feel guilty. But management and employees should be aware that we don't have to come to your restaurant. Which I will not.

Kyle S.

Yelp
Quick and delicious! Service was friendly. Norma took my order and gave me great recommendations. Highly recommend if your in the area. 24/7 and has a good ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here is always very fresh tasting and delicious! There's good options for vegans with the potato flautas and tacos (no cheese) and the veggie burritos (choose your own 4 ingredients), plus other options too especially for vegetarians (tostadas etc). Friendly staff and their avocado salsa is so yummy!!!! They also have glass bottle Mexican coke which is a great addition.

Yelp
We went through the drive thur this last Saturday we ordered three burritos and fries on our way out of town for when we got hungry. I looked in the bag and all the burritos were labeled so I paid no mind on opening each burrito and checking what was inside of the burritos. The three burritos we ordered were a carnitas burrito, carne asada burrito and a Pork Chile verde burrito with NO BEANS. The receipt shows NO BEANS RIGHT IM NOT IMAGINING IT. We get to Las Vegas and decide ok we are hungry let's eat our burritos the Chile verde burrito take one bite and taste beans wtf open the burrito and it was literally a shit tone of rice and beans there was a literally no pork. Super irritated!!! Husband bites into his carnitas burrito and it tasted like ASS so horrible he decides no to eat it, daughter bites into her carne asada burrito and again the carne asada was super dry and full of gristle and yucky pico de gallo. She doesn't want her burrito either so the three of us throw all the burritos back in the bag. I call the store no one answers it's around 11pm. I call Sunday talk to a girl about getting a refund she says no I can't I have to bring the food back in and I expressed to her I won't be back to San Diego until March I told her ok I'll freeze the food and bring back to you. She is quite I ask to speak with a manger she proceeds telling me no manger was there until Monday his name is "Saeed." So Monday I call again I ask to speak to Saeed he answers I explain to him what happened and he said he would call me back, because he needs to talk to his manager. Well he never calls back on Monday so I call back on Tuesday and he isn't there. At this point I'm just over the whole situation but am pissed I wasted over $50 for the worst food we have ever had. I waited to speak to Saeed to get a refund and just not leave a review, but he never called me back and I'm not going to keep calling everyday until I get money back. This place is super over priced the quality of food is disgusting, they can't even make your order correct and you can't get anything back for their employees messing up your order. Managers need to speak to their managers which probably need to speak to their managers and nothing ever gets solved. Just shut this business down!!
google avatar

Tara R.

Yelp
Unfortunately, I pulled up Yelp and saw the reviews after I placed my order at the drive thru. I decided not to think too much into it and was hopeful. As long as the food is fresh and tastes good I'm good. I ordered 3 carne Asada TJ tacos. I ate my food right away and the meat was cold. I just got it and it was cold! The taste was not very good. It kind of taste old if that makes sense. Typically TJ tacos come with 2 tortillas per taco but not this one. I didn't really mind about that but unfortunately the tacos were not good. The only thing I like was the tomatillo sauce. I had to use the sauce to make the tacos taste decent.
google avatar

Chas G.

Yelp
People come to San Diego from across the globe in search of the best Mexican food in the USA. San Diego has some of the finest examples of Mexican cuisine in the United States. But not many come to San Diego in search of the absolute worst Mexican food in all of United States. You have struck gold!! You have a rare opportunity to experience the most pathetic excuse for Mexican food in the United States and probably the planet. Taste the flavorless tacos, soggy burritos and hapless excuse for carne asada. After experiencing these delicacies you will celebrate every drive-through Taco Bell, Del taco and even the green burrito attached to your local Carl's Jr. By comparison these will seem like culinary delights imported directly from the finest chefs in all of Mexico. This is a rare opportunity indeed. Because only by experiencing the worst can you truly appreciate the most mediocre.
google avatar

JL S.

Yelp
FU Tony's. Never again. $27 for a veggie burrito and veggie nachos. Same price as carne asada. Not worth it by a long shot. Would've been less than $10 at Taco Bell for the same quality.
google avatar

Shannen M.

Yelp
So disappointing. I've been eating at Tony's for fast food since college. This trip the food was different. I love the adobada quesadilla, creature of habit, it used to be delicious. And way over priced.
google avatar

Chelle S.

Yelp
Garbage Mexican food with shitty service and a broken drive thru speaker. Do better. Bring back Santanas.
google avatar

Alicia R.

Yelp
We've come here for a while and the radio system causes a lot of issues. This time, I tried to order an "Azteca quesadilla" (a quesadilla with cheese, beans and carne asada) and they repeated back what sounded like "Chicken quesadilla." Then I repeated my order and they asked what type of cheese (the Azteca comes with jack or cheddar), and I said "jack cheese." I got home to find a plain cheddar cheese quesadilla - not even the type of cheese I requested. So, I called to let them know about the mistake and they didn't offer to correct it, but they said "we heard you say cheddar quesadilla, so that's what we made." I explained to them I said my order twice as clear as I could into their speaker and that they didn't give me a receipt so I had no way of knowing what I paid for. But from their perspective, they were correct and there was nothing more to say. Mistakes happen, but you should at least attempt to fix it. Customer satisfaction doesn't seem to be a priority here.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
What a joke getting charged extra to get horchata when the burritos I paid for clearly say w/drink.
google avatar

Daniela H.

Yelp
For starters I only came here because I was in the area, the shop itself looks nice from the front but we didn't go inside. The drive through speaker is a bit muffly, but overall its alright. As we got there, one of their workers outside was giving us a dirty look, maybe a bad day I'd assume, lets hope. Anyways, although the concept of making your own burrito may be a good idea at chipotle, it shouldn't even be an option here. We got a veggie burrito in which we can apparantly only get 4 items, and the "potatoes" are just fries. We had to tell them what to put in it, and honestly, if I wanted to create my own burrito I would've gone to chipotle. The veggie burrito was too salty, and forgot to mention, we asked to have guac and sour cream and they charged us extra but there was barely any in there and it didn't say it was included, but if it was, I don't know why we got charged. We also got the california burrito with guacamole, which to my knowledge the original cali burrito has guac, but most restaurants want to charge for guac now I guess. Anyways, the first bites were pure tortilla, and although the carne asada was good, it was a bit salty and way too greasy, and the rest of the ingredients were bland. As a mexican myself, I was a bit thrown off my the guac, it was way too bland and runny. The price of the burritos were $11 and max should've been $25 but we were charged 31, and got charged for ingredients they didn't even add lol. Once at the window, we paid and once the lady saw we gave no tip she didn't look too happy, but Im not being funny have a better attitude. I have seen lots of reviews where they take people's money for tips after their visit, so lets hope that's not the case. Overall, it was decent, if you're hungry and nearby sure stop by but be prepared to be charged for stuff you don't get and for not the happiest of employees.

Donell W.

Yelp
The food was decent and it's location made it an easy breakfast staple until the rude and unprofessional staff messed up my order and had cracked egg shells in my burritos. I was home when I noticed it called immediately I told them I wanted to speak to a manager and they said they would call back. This did not happen I drove by the next day and they also said a manager was not on staff. So they couldn't do anything. Wouldn't reach out to anyone in charge!!
google avatar

Meghan F.

Yelp
I haven't tried much at Tony's other than what was recommended to me by one of the employees working there. I usually ask what employees like because they tend to know the menu more ;) Anywhoo his recommendation was the shrimp quesadilla which turned out to be the best quesadilla I've had in a long time. They packed the quesadilla with fajita shrimp and veggies and some type of sauce inside that was messy, yes, but absolutely elevated the quesadilla. A small was enough to feed my fiancé and I late at night but maybe would get a larger one to share if we were wanting a full meal. Highly recommend the shrimp quesadilla!!!

Yelp
I am beyond furious with this restaurant! On Friday, September 1 at 6:09 PM. I went to the drive-through and ordered some Carne Asada fries simple three days later I notice that the amount on my credit card statement changed! This restaurant has the audacity to add a tip to my credit card without my permission. I went through the drive-through I am not tipping! This is a credit card fraud! I don't care about the amount I care about the principle you do not know me, or my life I could be poor, and you stealing my money is insane and it is a crime! She tried to say it could be a mistake, but I don't believe her. Beware when, using your credit card at this restaurant is more than likely they will steal from you! i've never had anything like this happen at any other restaurants. But luckily, I have multiple receipts and used Apple Pay. This toxic tip culture has got so bad that they think they can charge your card after you've already left three days later.

Yelp
This place is the absolute worst! I have NEVER encountered more rude individuals in a taco shop in my life. Not only did they give me the wrong order and actually dropped my food and the girl tried giving it to me after she dropped it because she thought I didn't see her but when I told her I didn't want the smeared hot mess she was trying to give me she said ok with an additude as if I was the one who dropped it! She hands me a bag after a couple minutes I drive away to go meet my boyfriend and child at the park in Liberty Station and what do I get when I opened it ....? Some chewy messy old carne asada fries that I didn't order so I call them right away to let them know how upset I was because I had a long day and ALL I wanted was what I ordered. The girl on the phone LITERALLY yelled at me and said I needed to speak "nice" and she was offended that I was upset because THEY wasted my time and money yet wanted me to be nice ?!?!? All I asked of her was how she was going to fix the issue and she hung up on me. When I tried calling back they wouldn't answer. Unbelievable. When I told one of my friends she said " oh yeah they're super rude there and do whatever they want" Needles to say I will never go back there and neither will my friends and family. WORST OF THE WORST

Yelp
This is my go to Mexican place. I love the rolled tacos and flautas. It's a specific craving that I have every so often.

This spot is always a fit or miss. Zero consistency of the quality of the food. I get their ceviche all the time and every time it's different. I got nervous once but ate it cause I was starving, but the shrimps were low quality, they DO NOT de-vein the shrimp. Yum! Poopy shrimp! Sometimes it's tasty but picking out the poop from the shrimp is a big no no. However there are times the ceviche is on point. So like I said this place is ehhh also the price! One tostado of ceviche is $7 and some change! Nah!
