Tony's Market is a one-stop local favorite for three island must-haves: beer, take out lunch and lottery tickets.
Their sandwiches are generous, affordable and tasty. If you call ahead you can have it waiting for you when you arrive, which is nice if you are in a rush. Back when I was eating red meat and American cheese, I had a regular Friday tango with one of their cheese steak sandwiches which was a highlight of my work week. The deli counter is over to the right when you walk in and they make anything you want- hot and cold subs, primarily. It's not fancy and you can't eat there, but if you notice the number of cars in the parking lot at lunch, you'll discern that these guys know how to make a meal.
All the booze is in the back and they actually have a decent selection. It's interesting to see who tanks up at lunch time and on Sundays at noon which is when liquor sales begin on Sundays in Massachusetts.
Tony's does offer your basic household necessities like milk, paper towels, dish soap and the random vegetable, but I don't think there's much turnover there.
The staff can be surly and gruff but don't let that scare you. Most of them have been here forever and have seen it all.
They've had a few big lottery winners including one that put an island gal on Easy Street for the rest of her life, so there's always a fair number of people hoping for a repeat performance.
Tony's is out of the way but when you find it, you'll be happy you did. Especially if you are going for beer, sandwiches or lottery tickets.
