My Mom and I Became Digital Nomads at the Same Time — Here’s What Traveling Together Is Like

"While I’d recommend going through a homestay to do a trek with a local guide, if you’re looking for cozier accommodations, we were enamored with Topas Ecolodge. A 45-minute drive from Sapa town, the property sits on a cloud-covered hilltop with unparalleled views of the surrounding mountains — when the fog subsides, that is." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Wow, what an amazing place; stunning location perched on the top of a mountain with 360 degree views of mountains ranges, waterfalls and rice fields. Peaceful location. Staff were all so friendly. Infinity pool was amazing with a nice pool bar nearby. Nice to see a hotrl that actually helps the environment, so instance they offer free drinks if you ask for the room not to be cleaned every day or not to provide fresh towels each day. Definitely would recommend this place.

We spent 2.5 weeks in Vietnam and stayed at 6 hotels and this was my favourite hotel. It's a bit of a trek from Hanoi, but the shuttle is very comfortable and they picked us up from our hotel. You do need to be staying at a hotel in the old quarter in order to picked up directly from your hotel. We did the hiking tour and the hikes were amazing. It had been raining and it was very muddy and I did slip so make sure you have good shoes. We did borrow rubber boots from the hotel and these were very helpful. We opted for the pool villa and I would highly recommend this. We would wake up in the morning to a view of nothing but clouds and then there would be a break and you could see down into the valley. The pool off of our room was like a hot tub which was lovely. The larger pools had even more amazing views and they were heated as well, but there was a pool that was cooler. The food at every restaurant was so good. If you have a pool villa you can eat breakfast at the 360 degree restaurant. We ate dinner there one evening and it was very good, but the menu was limited and we ended up liking the Stilt House restaurant better because it had more options and in particular more vegetarian options. They had a lovely happy hour each evening. I can see why this hotel is on the National Geographic list of lakes and mountains hotels. Every hotel we stayed at in Vietnam was lovely, but this one was really exceptional due to the incredible location.

Gorgeous, dreamy resort with amazing service and focus on sustainability and the local economy. I'll note the areas for improvement towards the end of this review. ||General-The resort is located ~45 min drive from Sapa town and is situated at the top of two mountains. We stayed here for 2 days/2 nights, which was the perfect amount of time. Having your own personal bungalow/cottage was nice and felt very private. Do be aware this is very much a resort in nature so there were some ants in our room and bugs everywhere outside. I enjoyed watching the butterflies and dragonflies zoom about, was very relaxing. The room/bathroom was generally clean although there were some very small dark brown stains on the bed sheets. They did include in their pamphlet somewhere if there's a small "imperfection" they won't throw out their sheets due to sustainability. The balcony was nice and led to a beautiful view of the valley.||Do be aware the unparalleled views are the main attraction here, so plan accordingly to the season and go in with the expectation that you might not see everything. I'm glad we stayed for 2 days as the first day it was completely foggy (which has its own charm), but the rain cleared up second day and the sunset was phenomenal. ||Food overall was decent although not as tasty as in Sapa town/Hanoi and more expensive. It does feel like they jack up the prices since there's not really any other food options unless you shuttle to Sapa. The breakfast buffet was amazing and had a lot of variety with its pho station, heated Vietnamese foods, traditional Western breakfast foods, fruits, etc. We had lunch/dinner at the Stilt House a couple of times and it was okay. Dinner at the 360 degree restaurant (reservations only) wasn't bad. Not sure if it's worth the price, but good to try it at least once during your stay. Do get the corn while in Sapa, the corn in this region is absolutely divine!||Spa- We got their highest package which was 3 hours and included a massage, facial, scrub, and herbal bath for $99-not bad at all for a resort. You could choose between different massage, facial, and scrub options. This was very relaxing and a great way to spend your time as we didn't want to leave the resort (more on that later). Our masseuses were kind/skilled and it was my first time getting cupping done. ||Service is amazing/attentive throughout, and I appreciate how they keep track of your bags during the check in/out process and bring them to/back the room. Housekeeping is nice and would stop by to fill up our water (there are water refilling stations throughout the property as well). It was kind of cool we could earn drink tokens by declining room cleaning. The resort is not huge, but getting from one side to the other can be a bit hilly, so there's often employees with golf carts who will take you. ||Amenities-there are two infinity style pools on two levels with hot tubs attached to them. Both are quite clean and well maintained. The pool or the resort in general never felt crowded and there is a poolside bar on the upper floor. The view is dreamy and it's nice to lounge around sipping on smoothies. There were mosquitos in the area so take extra care to cover up with a towel etc if you lay out. There's also a flute player that added to the tranquil atmosphere by playing there or at the Stilt House. ||5PM-Cocktail hour is a nice touch. They rotate the drink and snack every day. ||There's an outdoor BBQ dinner on certain days by the calisthenics park that requires sign up to attend. We didn't try as we were afraid of mosquitos haha. ||Some areas for improvement:|Shuttle-there's a twice daily free shuttle from/to Sapa (requires 24 hour notice signup), but it leaves Sapa way too early at like 1:15pm so even if you take the earliest shuttle you get maybe like 3 hours to spend. Grab/taxi prices are also high because the hotel is so remote. It'd be nice to get later shuttle times. ||The transport from the resort to Hanoi is expensive at 45-50 bucks pp, but you kind of have to use it unless you want to go into town (which is also doubling back). At least it's a very nice limousine van with comfortable seating. ||Activities/Excursions-this is a definitely more of a relax and chill on the resort kind of the place as you can't leave the premises without being followed/pressured. We stepped out maybe like 100 feet to a nearby vantage point and was followed/greeted by the locals who were waiting around the entrance. My partner who is Vietnamese told them no thank you and was scoffed at. If you are interested in socializing and buying from the locals this is for you, but we were hoping to be on our own. ||The excursions looked well put together but seemed on the pricier side (ie $84 pp) especially for Vietnam. A fellow resort guest told me she went on the rice terraces excursion and said it was fun/a workout but was also accompanied by locals through the entire journey and was pressured to purchase from them at the end. ||I'm not sure if I'd come back, but I'm glad I went once!

My husband and I stayed at Topas Ecolodge in April, and it was easily one of the most magical holidays we’ve ever had. Nestled high in the hills of Sapa, the lodge is surrounded by rolling rice terraces and misty peaks that look like something out of a dream. From the moment we arrived, everything felt peaceful, unhurried and deeply connected to nature. We stayed in one of the hilltop bungalows. Waking up each morning to panoramic views of the mountains and valley below was nothing short of breathtaking. The room was beautifully designed in a rustic, Scandinavian-meets-Vietnamese style, with natural materials, warm lighting and just the right amount of modern comfort. One of the highlights was the infinity pool, which looks out over the mountains. We spent hours just soaking it all in. There is something so calming about swimming in warm water while the clouds drift by overhead. The air was crisp and fresh, and every moment felt like a gentle escape from the world. The food was also excellent. The breakfast buffet had a lovely mix of Vietnamese and Western options. Dinner under the stars was always a treat. We especially loved the local dishes, which were fresh, flavourful and thoughtfully prepared. The staff were kind, attentive and quietly efficient. They made us feel welcome from the start and were always happy to help, whether it was arranging a hike, recommending a dish or simply sharing a bit about the area. We also went on a guided trek through the nearby villages. This was one of the most memorable parts of the trip. Our guide was knowledgeable and respectful, and it gave us a glimpse into local life that felt authentic and deeply moving. Topas Ecolodge is not just a place to stay. It is an experience. It encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with nature, yourself and the people you are with. I honestly did not want to leave. If you are looking for serenity, beauty and something truly special, this is it. We are already talking about when we can return.

**Postcard-Perfect Escape ** Breathtaking view from the well-maintained resort - walking amidst and waking up to lush greenery as far as the eye can see - misty valleys in the mornings and gorgeous green terrace fields during the day. Serenity and peacefulness is how I would describe my short stay there (wish I stayed longer instead of 1 night). The resort is impeccably maintained, and you can see from the little touches / details that they genuinely care for the environment while ensuring a great experience for their guests. Gorgeous views from the swimming pool and complimentary sundowner drinks at one of their restaurants was just lovely. Food quality at 360 was average (and i thought a bit pricey). Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Topas Ecolodge is such a beautiful hotel with beautiful landscape. Very uplifting to be inside the mountain. Despite the few negative reviews on service on google, to my surprise, staff were extremely friendly and super helpful. I even forgot our jackets in the hotel and they arranged sending it to Hanoi in their upcoming ride and sent it up to my hotel there. Very appreciated. The reason I didn’t give it 5 is because of the pool villa. Not worth the premium and has the worst view in the full area, especially villas 601 and 602. It feels even a bit not right to charge same money for it. They have limited/ bad view. 601 is fully blocked and 602 you view the start of the cliff. On top, they are next to the road so while you paid for the quietness of the mountain, you hear motorcycles and villagers truck as of 6 am. So hotel is recommended but definitely not the pool villas

Even with the rain, this place was still such a vibe. Stayed in the pool villa and it was perfect. The heated pool hit different with that mountain view. Super peaceful, quiet, and just made me wanna stay in and soak it all in. Didn’t wanna leave at all. Just one of those places you feel completely at peace.
