"With its off-kilter bell tower and simple brick exterior, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, a small, 7th-century church, doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, it's a Byzantine jewel box with glittering mosaics and floors covered with marble tiles. This is one of the oldest buildings in the Veneto region, and it's an interesting example of the Byzantine style that influenced some of the city's later, grander structures, like St. Mark's Basilica. Three euros gets you in the door; an extra two gets you a to-the-point audioguide." - Andrea Whittle

"What’s this place all about? With its off-kilter bell tower and simple brick exterior, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, a small, 7th-century church, doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, it's a Byzantine jewel box with glittering mosaics and floors covered with marble tiles. Three euros gets you in the door; an extra two gets you a to-the-point audioguide. What’s it like being there? Because of the scale, the church falls somewhere between pleasantly cozy and awe-inspiring. On a sunny day, the light filtering in makes everything shimmer. Who comes here? Historically inclined day trippers hitting up Torcello and Burano and long lunchers passing through while they wait for their water taxi to pick them up from Locanda Cipriani. Did it meet expectations? This is one of the oldest buildings in the Veneto region, and it's an interesting example of the Byzantine style that influenced some of the city's later, grander structures, like St. Mark's Basilica . So, then, what, or who, do you think it’s best for? If you're a fan of beautiful, peaceful churches, this well worth the handful of euros and the 15 minutes it takes to experience." - Andrea Whittle

There are no more things to do on the island, visit the church or maybe go for a walk around the countryside. The church is beautiful, but now (March 2024) is in renovation in a part of the facade and porche.

Beautiful little church, with a tower that will LITERALLY take your breath away in the ascent. (The ascent seems to go on FOREVER.) Not necessarily the most beautiful church in Venice but some very inviting looking restaurants on the approach, lovely landscaped gardens and surroundings, and still worth the visit if you like setting what's off the beaten track.

It's a stunning cathedral. It's the oldest cathedral of Venice. The exterior shows the decline the island itself has shown. But the inside is stunning. They don't allow you to click photographs but the interior has amazing mosaic work on the floor and the walls. I'd definitely recommend

Torcello Cathedral is an architectural masterpiece. The intricate mosaic work and historical significance create a serene and captivating atmosphere. The sense of tranquillity within its walls is truly a testament to the rich cultural heritage preserved in this gem on Torcello Island. A must-visit for anyone appreciating history and artistry.

I enjoyed the peaceful rural setting of Torcello. I paid 9 Euros for both the campanile and the basilica. The basilica is basically a 5 minute visit and there are signs that you are not allowed to take photos. The view from the campanile is not great due to the wire mesh all around. So not worth 9 Euros in my opinion.

Amazing basilica with beautiful mosaics. Truly like stepping back in time and seeing the origins of Venice. Well worth taking several boats to visit. It is actually not that hard or long so do it and see Murano and Burano as well for an amazing experience.

The cathedral is worth the walk from where you get off the water taxi or tour boat. It is a lovely cathedral from the outside. I didn't go in because of time constraints. You have to buy a ticket to tour inside.
