3 Best Day Trips from Venice | Condé Nast Traveler

"With its off-kilter bell tower and simple brick exterior, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, a small, 7th-century church, doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, it's a Byzantine jewel box with glittering mosaics and floors covered with marble tiles. This is one of the oldest buildings in the Veneto region, and it's an interesting example of the Byzantine style that influenced some of the city's later, grander structures, like St. Mark's Basilica. Three euros gets you in the door; an extra two gets you a to-the-point audioguide." - Andrea Whittle

Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta (Basilica di Torcello) – Landmark Review | Condé Nast Traveler

"What’s this place all about? With its off-kilter bell tower and simple brick exterior, Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, a small, 7th-century church, doesn't look like much from the outside. Inside, it's a Byzantine jewel box with glittering mosaics and floors covered with marble tiles. Three euros gets you in the door; an extra two gets you a to-the-point audioguide. What’s it like being there? Because of the scale, the church falls somewhere between pleasantly cozy and awe-inspiring. On a sunny day, the light filtering in makes everything shimmer. Who comes here? Historically inclined day trippers hitting up Torcello and Burano and long lunchers passing through while they wait for their water taxi to pick them up from Locanda Cipriani. Did it meet expectations? This is one of the oldest buildings in the Veneto region, and it's an interesting example of the Byzantine style that influenced some of the city's later, grander structures, like St. Mark's Basilica . So, then, what, or who, do you think it’s best for? If you're a fan of beautiful, peaceful churches, this well worth the handful of euros and the 15 minutes it takes to experience." - Andrea Whittle

Quite disappointed in this place. Was told it is worth the visit but seems more like most parts are closed for work and there is a whole list of things you can't do including taking photos. The most interesting part is the mosaics which was closed... and if you need to use the WC then you have to pay an additional 1.5 Euros (June 2025 so may be more by the time you read this). To really add injury to insult, despite being catholics we were refused entry into the church to pray. Not the worst thing the Catholic church has done, but their decision was financial based so very clearly corruption runs deep and at grass roots in the church, which is truly a crying shame In short we just didn't see the point in spending 10 euros for not being able to see much, be insulted for our religion and not even be able use basic facilities. Can't comment on the inside and don't really want to. The island if Torcello itself is very nice and definitely worth a visit. To get there go to Burano and get the number 6 boat from platform A ( which is just along from the main platform B/C - as you come out of B/C turn right and platform A is about 50/100metre away.

Do not waste your time or money on Torcello Basillica Church. Not worth seeing. Not worth the 5 euro ticket. Very rude staff (all 3 - ticket office, entrance and in the basillica). Clearly do not welcome tourists. Cannot take photos. Need to be a bit more respectful to the tourists, as you rely on tourism. Do not waste your time on this island Torcello.

Just a short boat ride from Burano lies the island of Torcello, home to the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, a treasure trove of history and art that is well worth a visit. Founded in 639 AD, this basilica stands as the oldest cathedral in the Venetian Lagoon, offering a glimpse into the region’s early history. The basilica is renowned for its stunning mosaics, which are among the most ancient and impressive in Italy. The 12th-century mosaic of the Last Judgement is particularly noteworthy, covering an entire wall with intricate and vivid depictions that have captivated visitors for centuries. These mosaics are believed to be the work of craftsmen from Constantinople, reflecting the Byzantine influence on Venetian art. In addition to the Last Judgement, the basilica houses other significant mosaics, including the Virgin Hodegetria, the Crucifixion, and the Anastasis, each showcasing the artistic mastery of the period. Visiting the basilica offers not only a visual feast but also a serene escape from the bustling areas of Venice. The tranquil surroundings of Torcello, combined with the basilica’s historical ambiance, make for a contemplative experience. Opening Hours: • March to October: 10:30 AM – 6:00 PM (last entrance at 5:30 PM) • November to February: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM (last entrance at 4:30 PM) Please note that the ticket office closes 30 minutes before the basilica’s closing time. A visit to the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta is a journey through time, offering insights into the rich tapestry of Venetian history and art. It’s an experience that should not be missed.

It's a stunning cathedral. It's the oldest cathedral of Venice. The exterior shows the decline the island itself has shown. But the inside is stunning. They don't allow you to click photographs but the interior has amazing mosaic work on the floor and the walls. I'd definitely recommend

A historic church and nearby archeological museum. Much older than most of Venice, it's more history and less grandeur than what you find on the Grand Canal. Incredibly beautiful during sunset.

Came April 25, a significant refresh is on going (no info when buying tickets) preventing a full experience. Local staff is closing 15min earlier than official time and do not allow photo.

They charge money to enter the house of God! Not worth it. It's a cute tiny town.

I am torn in my review. The basilica itself and the 11th century mosaics are an absolute must see if one is in the area and worth 10*. They are stunning and well preserved. BUT the staff, the audioguide, and the visiting rules are simply not visitor friendly. It starts at the ticket desk. Staff is unfriendly, tickets are expensive - especially that more then half of the church is under renovation and one can see only a small part of it, while paying full price. It is impossible to take pictures. The audioguide (2€) is clearly recorded by someone who reads the English text without any understanding of it - it is hard to follow. It also switched to Italian in the middle. It could also be better content wise. In summary, I was stunned by the mosaics (the part that we could see, that is) and annoyed by the organization of the visit.
