Torcello Island is located about ten kilometers northeast of the main island of Venice. Travel guides often suggest that tourists visit Burano Island first before taking a "detour" to explore Torcello. However, while the journey from the main island to Torcello is quite straightforward, the return trip requires more careful planning as the routes to and from the island are not the same.
In fact, Torcello's terrain consists of sandy shores, salt marshes, and scattered hills, giving it a primitive and undeveloped appearance with very few inhabitants. Compared to the main island or nearby Burano, it's quite apt to humorously refer to Torcello as a "desolate island."
When I initially planned my trip, it was a single phrase in the guidebook—"Torcello Island is the birthplace of Venice"—that sparked my historical curiosity, otherwise, I wouldn't have considered visiting.
