On the Grid : Torn Label Brewing Company

"Start-up breweries are now popping up in Kansas City like mushrooms after a heavy rain. Torn Label was one of the first to arise in the Crossroads a couple years back and they’re now in full flower. It’s not much from the street, nestled in an industrial area to the east, but get in the door off the patio and you’ll discover a cozy, reclaimed wood-paneled escape perfect for sampling their tasty brews with a friend." - Brent Anderson

First visit to Torn Label and was absolutely blown away. Everything about this place is top-tier. First, the staff is simply excellent! Friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely excited about their beer, and facility. Even let us see the brewery. It makes the whole experience feel welcoming and fun. The beer selection is diverse and high-quality. But the food was the legit amazing surprise! Torn Label's kitchen is operating at a high level. It's truly a scratch kitchen experience that elevates the entire visit.

Look… I consider myself to have high standards when it comes to tacos. I’m originally from the border of Mexico. I lived there for the first 20+ years of my life. I moved to Kansas City in 2018 and there was a taco sized hole in my heart. Nothing was quite right. Sure, there were a few good options down southwest boulevard. But I winced every time someone whose complexion matched the color of horchata that I so dearly longed for, used the word “authentic” to describe a restaurant that served tomato paste and called it “salsa”. The first time I was introduced to Tacos Valentina was at Fern Bar on the last day they served their brunch menu. Their breakfast cronch wrap transported me to the days of popping into Mexico for Sunday afternoon lunch. I nearly cried knowing it was the end of their menu. (I might have actually cried when I was brought a sample of horchata that was soon to be added to the menu. It was perfect. Just like home. Something I had yet to find everywhere else I tried.) But when I found out that these glorious cronch wraps hailed from a few blocks away, my joy was restored. Tacos Valentina has been incredible every single time I’ve gone. Highly recommend. Please go. Support local. 10/10, every time.

This is a fantastic spot. I was on vacation but looking for the "local" experience. There's a huge selection of tasty beers, lots of veggie options for tacos, and an extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. Solid 5/5 and definitely a top notch experience.

Torn Label just does it right. All the beers are good and the setting is welcoming and approachable. I let the bartender pick my flight. I told him what I like and he picked a great flight that fit all my tastes. The beers paired perfectly with our tacos.

Went with family. I never would have found it since there are no signs, just a banner on the deck. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. I had the burrito and elite. We shared the sweet potato chips with bean dip and an order of fries.

Great hole in the wall in downtown KC. Great beer flights. Very chill and relaxing place. They have games to play. Mexican food was good and different. The empanadas were really good.

All the beers were fantastic from the dark Mexican lager to the driveway Czech, but the real deal sealer was the tacos. I ordered the cochinita pibil and suadero to start, and I had to get the pollo adobado because the first two were so dang good. The salsa is amazing as well. Tacos Valentina is a real show stopper. Grabbed a couple cans to go as well because the beer was too delicious to leave behind. So good.

Hands down, Torn Label offers the best food out of any brewery in Kansas City. This is a go-to spot for us on a Saturday when we're looking for a fantastic lunch coupled with some equally solid beers. From a beer perspective, Torn Label usually offers around a dozen beers on tap, 3 of which are consistent year-rounders and the rest seasonal and rotating. I'd be hard pressed to write a comprehensive list of all the beers I love, but High Contrast Witbier and Golden Garden Saison are definitely two that I consistently look for. When you visit, you have two options: 1) the OG taproom space or 2) the newer, larger Public House space. The OG taproom is charming and moody, with lower lighting and minimal seating indoors. A huge patio/deck area makes up for it with ample outdoor seating. The Public House is where we spend most of our time. While not massive by any means, it's much larger than the taproom, and much more open and airy. Plus, the food. Let's talk about the food. Like I mentioned, Torn Label absolutely has the best food out of any KC brewery with a kitchen. But beyond that, in my opinion they have the best French fries in Kansas City overall. Beautifully crispy and perfectly salted potatoes fried in tallow and as an added bonus, Torn Label has a rotating selection of stellar dipping sauces. While they are ever-changing, we've found favorites in the curry ketchup, romesco, and gochujang aioli, among others. Beyond fries, Tacos Valentina currently has a residency inside Torn Label, serving up decadent tacos, elotes and more. If delicious local beer and delicious local food under one roof is your game, Torn Label is the name to remember.
