I stayed at the hostel and hotel and I can just recommend it. It's a 15-20 minute walk from downtown. The prices are fair, given that this is not your regular hotel but something else. It is a cooperative owned and run by maseualmej, one of the indigenous peoples in the region. All proceedings support more of their work that includes a wide range of projects such as sustainable household, health, education, environmental awareness, fair trade organic production and women and youth participation in the region. The pool is small but nice and there is a spa with certified masseuses. The food is just delicious, you have to ask for Tlayoyos and Cecina. They also produce organic honey (melipona bee, an endogenous species) and make some cosmetic products, such as shampoo and moisturizers that work wonders. You can ask for a "tour interno" and they show all the eco-techniques they implement at the hotel (natural water filters, fertilizers, compost, bamboo construction, rain collecting system, solar panels, organic garden, intercultural school, capacity building center) and you will be amazed. If you are more adventurous ask for the tours outside with the guides and visit the small producers: Visits to rivers and natural pools, visit to archeological site Yohualichan, "Ruta de la canela", "Ruta del Café", "Ruta de la miel", "Ruta de la pimienta" etc. It is incredible how much they do in terms of sustainability and food security, and you will be able to see it directly with the small farmers and producers at their homes. The downside is that they don't speak much English (Remember that they are already bilingual since they speak nahuatl as mother tongue and learned spanish at school, so please be comprehensive on that matter), but they are very kind, patient and helpful on whatever you need. |As it is an eco-hotel, it may lack of some of the comfort of luxury hotels (which actually do not exist in Cuetzalan). Be prepared for mosquito bites, a small flashlight would be useful (the pathways have some lights, but since it is solar panels, it might not be enough for you), water shoes or sandals with a good grip for slippery rocks, raincoat, and also eco-friendly sunscreen. Cuetzalan is a "pueblo mágico" and it deserves the name!!!||||
