10 Black History Tours and Experiences in New Orleans

"Led by former Mardi Gras/Second Line King Hollis Burton, this walking food tour and bar crawl showcases the richness of Tremé’s African American cuisine. The tour includes generous samplings of each dish and ends with a daiquiri at one of Tremé’s many jazz clubs."

Our tour guide was Nika and she is an absolutely amazing. She has so many historic stories to tell and is excited to share the stories with as many people as she can. She is truly a woman that sees value in history and how it is important to not repeat the horrors of the past. She is very friendly and it's obvious that she loves her job and is highly dedicated to it. I also love her finger nails

Yelp
On a cloudy rainy day today we got to meet Hollis. We weren't able to walk the tour but he was gracious enough to drive us around in his car. When I say he took us through the best guided tour EVER!! He's knowledge and experiences spoke to the history, culture and struggles of the city. We started with the Storyville area and heard about the rich history and how the community has drastically changed after Hurricane Katrina which coincidentally happened 19 years ago today. From there we traveled through parts of NOLA and to the Lower ninth Ward to see the area today and hear first hand about what happened and what's occurring today. We ended this tour at one of Hollis' favorite spots- Stuph'd for some great beignets. This tour that was supposed to only last an hour ended up lasting two hours and we are so much more enlightened after!! Don't second guess., book with Hollis and you'll learn so much more than the traditional tours. Thank you Hollis for the great experience and helping to cap off our trip and my birthday!!

Yelp
Had an absolute blast learning about the community and culture of the second line in this New Orleans neighborhood. Hollis and Levar were outstanding guides that truly went the extra mile in making this the experience it was. Thank you Hollis and Levar!

Yelp
My cousin and I had the pleasure of taking this tour today. Whenever I travel I love to learn about the history and culture of the place that I'm going. Well today we got just that. We learned about a small portion of NO. How/where second line originated, theater, damage before and after Katrina. Walking through the city. Seeing different murals. We went to a museum and a community event that ended in a delicious fish fry. Our guide was VERY knowledgeable and showed us different pictures/videos of the city. It was an amazing time.

Yelp
Everything about this tour was amazing. A great way to experience the culture and spirit of Treme. I recommend everyone who visits NOLA to take this tour as Hollis was a great tour guide that made everyone feel welcome while providing all kinds of knowledge about his community. Recommendation: Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Yelp
Thank you Treme Luxury Experience and our guide Hollis for immersing our group into the culture of New Orleans. We got to experience the second line parade with the locals along with learn about the history of it and the neighborhood. We had an amazing time. 100% recommend doing this while visiting New Orleans. Be prepared to walk, dance, and have a great time!

Yelp
Book this walking tour!!! Hollis is a New Orleans native, who is extremely knowledgable about this community. I've been to NO several times but was not aware of a lot of the information that Hollis shared. This was my first time hearing about the Tremé neighborhood and I enjoyed the history (past+present+future) lesson. I highly recommend this tour and I am excited to visit some of Hollis' other recommendations.

Yelp
Experience was fun but it wasn't much of a tour. There was not much information provided, and the guide was often busy with personal phone calls or chats.

Yelp
This was an amazing tour. Lots of history about the area, AND King Hollis offers a dynamic bar crawl. A classy bunch from NY, SC, NC & MI, we asked for what may be considered a specialty tour--women of color in Nola business. Hollis' connections did not disappoint. Safe driving, good food, great company and adult entertainment. What's not to love? Go on and book yours, now!

Yelp
This experience was amazing! Before the tour, I only knew about second-line parades from shows or films. Let me tell you that did NOT prepare me for the amount of history we'd learn, culture we'd see on display, and fun I'd have in those couple hours. Hollis is a well-known Treme community member and he's a wealth of knowledge! New Orleans is an old city and the culture of Black/African Americans runs deep - once you look past the touristy areas of Bourbon Street and the main streets in the French Quarter. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting New Orleans. Wear comfortable shoes, wear sunglasses and sunscreen (for bright days) and prepare for a great time. Thank you again, Hollis!

Yelp
We booked a tour with Hollis to attend a 2nd Line Paraded. This is an experience not to be missed! We were able to see and feel the authentic New Orleans. Hollis provided us with so much context to help us to make meaning and understand the importance and cultural significance of 2nd Lines. Hollis has a deep love for his community and it was apparent throughout the day in the way he told his stories and the way he connected with people along the route. It's clear that he's doing this because of how passionately he feels about preserving and sharing the culture. I couldn't help but walk away feeling that love. I highly recommend this tour!  Thank you Hollis for sharing your New Orleans with us!

Yelp
An experience where I didn't know what to expect. The Treme tour is a side of New Orleans that not a lot of tourists will choose to see. Hollis took great care to convey both the joy and the troubles experience in the area. He speaks to the past, present and future of the Treme area and New Orleans. The murals that he took us to were beautiful. The history of Mardi Gras and krewes Was fascinating. He does not shy away or sugarcoat the subjugation and Disenfranchisement of the African-American community here but instead discusses the way in which this lovely town was built on the backs of this community. On a sidenote, he was a very kind and talkative tour guide. He actually picked us up from our hotel and took us on the tour. His vehicle was clean very clean. His driving was superb. At the end of the tour, he dropped us off at an excellent seafood place. If you are a history buff or want to know more about the Treme area and New Orleans history in general, I highly recommend the tour.

Yelp
I've been to Nola multiple times but I've never experienced it the way Hollis showed us! Hollis gave us in-depth explanations of the history of parts of Nola we've never been exposed to before. He was very knowledgeable about the history of Nola, & the cultural ramifications of gentrification, as well as the impact the hurricanes have had on the communities of color. At the end of the tour, he took us to a great restaurant & gave us recommendations of places to go during our weekend trip. I would highly recommend a tour with Hollis! We loved it!
