Yelp
Buffalo is filled with great restaurants! Whether you're looking for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, you'll find something good. Then there is great! That's where Toutant comes in. Toutant is a southern inspired restaurant located downtown. Parking could be difficult on the street, but there are pay to park lots available. As you're walking down Ellicott, you could miss it if you're not looking for it. It's very unassuming when you walk in. It's industrial, smaller restaurant look/feel could throw you off, until you realize it's three floors.
The menu is refined and solid. Not too busy, with just enough to choose from. Recently, a group of us went for brunch. I would highly recommend reservations for brunch as it does fill up quickly. We started with the appetizer special of cinnamon sugar pork rinds and added the classic pimento cheese. The warmth of the crispy pork melted the creamy pimento. The thought of cinnamon sugar and spice seemed odd until you ate it. It was a great start to the meal. For entrees, the four of us decided to split four meals, just because we didn't want to have food envy of each other. I'm glad we did because I would have been jealous of everything I didn't order! We split the Biscuits & Gravy, Nashville Hot Chicken, Shrimp and Grits, and the Barbeque Hash.
The biscuits were soft and flaky while the sausage gravy was smooth and delicious, topped with two eggs cooked to your liking. The Nashville Hot Chicken was thigh meat piled on top of thick Texas toast and topped with house made pickles. I am normally not a fan of dark/thigh meat, but it was so tender and the batter on the chicken held its crunch all the way through. The Shrimp and Grits were the second best I've ever had, with the best being in New Orleans. The medium sized gulf shrimp were cooked perfectly and placed on a bed of creamy grits bathed in a light tomato broth. Lastly was the Barbeque Hash. This was my least favorite of the bunch. It was a skillet loaded with tater tots, and topped with smoked pork, root vegetables and two eggs cooked to your liking. Don't be confused by the flavor and taste of the Barbeque Hash. Although it was my least favorite of the four entrees', it was still delicious!
Wash it all down with one of their delicious cocktails, choosing from their wide selection of bourbon/whiskey. Or you can just roll the dice and go with their Striker Special, which is a beer and shot of their choice. No matter what you decide, make sure Toutant is on your list whether it be for a night out or Sunday Funday!
