BUFFALO CITY GUIDE

"Toutant**(pronounced too-tawnt) offers contemporary country cuisine and libations, served in a comfortable, casual setting. Focusing on high-quality, seasonal ingredients, Roberts’ Southern Louisiana roots and dedication to New York’s farming community provides Buffalo diners with access to modern, fresh cuisine influenced by the American South."

"Until Toutant opened in 2015, Buffalonians were hard-pressed to find any quality Southern food in their hometown. But now, when the craving for buttermilk fried chicken hits, they head to this Downtown spot, where chef James Robert combines his Louisiana roots with a passion for seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. A bit more refined than your everyday barbecue joint, Toutant is housed in a three-story, industrial-chic space, complete with a long bar for sipping craft beers, classic cocktails, and vast selection of whiskeys. While dinner brings such delicious dishes as house-smoked sausage, pan-fried cornmeal catfish, and traditional Creole jambalaya, brunch is the real winner here. The biscuits with two fried eggs and sausage gravy are hands down the best above the Mason-Dixon Line."

We love coming to Toutant. The food, atmosphere, and service are always great. If you're a bourbon drinker, they have a fantastic selection!

We celebrated my nephews high school graduation here. I'm big on customer service so I'll start there and say they supersceded those expectations. They took reservation for a large party with little notice and assisted with bringing up decorations and cutting the cake. Everyone enjoyed their food and we a wide range from family style meal, steak and shrimp, barbecue ribs, shrimp po boy, Nashville chicken, vegan jambalaya, and regular jambalaya. There were no complaints except the greens tasted like pure vinegar was added, and my mom said the Nashville chicken was overcooked. Other than that, it was a good experience and happy faces.

We had such a great experience at Toutant. The service was impeccable! I loved that the place appeared small, but has lots of space with different floors. We ordered biscuits and jam, the fried chicken with mash potatoes, sausage gravy, and candied yams and marshmallow meringue. We also ordered a baloney sandwich from their 9 year anniversary menu. The baloney sandwich has two big pieces of baloney, cheese, onions, mustard, a fried egg, and freshly baked bread. It's only there for a limited time. Get it while you can!! The biscuits and jam were also freshly made and delicious! I highly recommend the candied yams with marshmallow meringue! The sweet potatoes were more like a dessert than a side dish! I had one concern. I expected more from the fried chicken. Although it had a great crunch, it was missing the cayenne salt flavour. It was the same for the mash potatoes. It definitely needed some salt despite having the sausage gravy. I did not complain or tell the server even though I probably should've. The server was so friendly and attentive, but not overbearing. She gave us the bread pudding for my husband's birthday. We were so full, but she packed it up. It was so nice of them! I would definitely come back and try the rest of the menu!

Food and service were great! Excited they had coffee with chicory. The cinnamon bun was a great add!

Google
Amazing!!! They fit us in for a last minute reservation. What an amazing atmosphere! Service was good, but not fantastic. Gentleman up front was amazing!! Food was very, very good! Highly recommend the fried chicken or the ribs if they have them. The biscuits were to die for, but a little spendy for just bread. There were 5 of us, we all got different things and everyone was happy! Great portion sizes. As for dessert, if you get the brown butter ice cream, get it with the coffee & whiskey. It needs it, and it’s is absolutely incredible…but alone it’s just meh. We will definitely be back and looking forward to trying brunch.

We had a great brunch at Toutant. We have been on the hunt for some real southern biscuits and gravy, and we finally found it!!! Hands down the best biscuits we’ve ever had. Our server Tyler was great and quite knowledgeable - he was so busy but never rushed us, and answered all questions with a smile. We even got to chat with the owner on our way out. He was so nice and welcoming. We can’t wait to go back!!

I can believe it has taken me this long to try Toutant. First off, the ambiance is very rustic with the exposed brick throughout the restaurant. You are greeted by a bar as you walk in with a decent amount of whiskeys and spirits. All the table seating is on the second and third floor of the restaurant. They care very much about dietary restrictions and allergies, and it's very much appreciated. In this outing my friends and I ordered the Burnt Ends Appetizer ($15), Piccadilly Special ($98) Fried Chicken Bucket, Pimento Cheese ($8) and Traditional Creole Jambalaya with Sausage ($25). The Fried Chicken was by far some of the best I have ever had. The bucket can easily feed more than 4 diners and it came with Collard Greens, Smashed Potatoes and 6 Biscuits with Apple Butter. The Burnt Ends were very soft and tender and Pimento Cheese paired well with the biscuits. The only menu item I would not recommend was the Jambalaya. It was quite bland and did not have any spiciness to it. Otherwise, I would highly recommend coming to give Toutant a try. Please make a reservation as they can get quite busy.

This place is a fancy lil spot in Downtown Buffalo. Very quaint and nice. The staff is incredibly sweet and the food was good. The portion size is nice, which means you'll probably have leftovers! They do not have parking, so you have to park on the street aaaaaaaaaaand, this place is NOT for the handicapped. They have 3 levels of dining area: The bar is on the first floor with a couple of tables, and the bathroom is up a flight of stairs. The second level is 2 flights up, and the third level is 2 more flights up, which is a total of 4 flights. DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU ARE HANDICAPPED and HAVE DEVICES!!!!!! P.S. the drinks are good and strong!!!! 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾

Yelp
Date night! I loved every minute of it!! It's soooo cool, super industrial inside and intimate at the same time. The food was so good! The biscuits seriously forget about it ahahha it was sooooooo good. I was skeptical at first so I ordered one and then I was blown away. Had to order the full order! The bbq was very very good. But seriously I can't believe I'm saying this but probably the best steak ive ever had that has been prepared on a grill. Perfectly cooked medium rare with just the right amount of char in every bite but sooooooo tender. My bf used a butter knife to cut it and it sliced like butter. I've had my fair share of steaks from pretty well established other steak houses and this is the best on the grill. The dessert, ooeey gooey cake was soooo bomb. Service was incredible! She was sooo nice. I forgot her name. I will def come back! A+ for date night A+ for food A+ for service

Yelp
Great service and relaxing atmosphere to celebrate our anniversary and being our toddler too. Get this: shrimp po boy (one of the best things in buffalo and huge) Biscuits (soft and delicious with some crispy bits) Sweet potatoes were a great dessert Skip: we got three different drinks: mango frozen drink tasted awful and was sweet, banana rum drink was strong but nothing else, pamona was watery Overall the food is great and the drinks are nothing special. Staff was super nice to our toddler they had a high chair and even crayons and things for her to color with. They also have cups with lids.

Yelp
Mixed review: service was excellent, altho server did check in with us too ofte, even after we told him we'd flag him down if we needed anything. We were able to have the table for the evening which was terrific. Glasses of wine were the smallest we've ever been served; cornbread and collard greens were nothing special, and the cornbread was certainly not worth $14! The jambalaya with gulf shrimp was the best, and plenty of shrimp! Never had polenta that thin or that sticky. short ribs special v. good. Overall, disappointed, won't be going back anytime soon, nor would i recommend it except for the main courses.

Yelp
Top 5 of our favorite Buffalo restaurants. Not to be missed! The atmosphere is inviting, their mixologist are second to none and their southern flare menu is delicious!

Yelp
Exceptional, bourbon prices are great, staff was friendly and inviting. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I've never had a bad experience here. A group of us went for a birthday brunch, and the staff was very pleasant and accommodating. They allowed us to bring in a cake (some places charge a fee) and provided us with candles (we forgot ours). We ordered practically everything on the menu and shared. None of us had any complaints. Everything was delicious!!
google avatar

Holly C.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, when I saw that the gravy wasn't white gravy, my little texas heart didn't know what to do. But it was delicious and I only slightly missed the white gravy. My chicken fried steak was an A+. Eggs also cooked perfectly, set white, runny yoke. Biscuit=perfection. My spouse got the. Breakfast plate but subbed collards for the meats. He loved the grits--light and airy while still indulgent he said. He also loved the bread, which is not normally something he eats. He wished the collards had more vinegar and that the papas were more seasoned. Our servers were attentive and fun! We never wanted for anything.

Yelp
Toutant was a great experience! Really nice, clean environment. Super friendly, knowledgeable and attentive staff. We came with a family member who lives in Buffalo, and this is one of his go to places. I had a delightful NA drink, and the other folks in my party enjoyed their alcoholic drinks as well. We shared the biscuits which were really good; super buttery and soft. The candied yams were good. In my opinion, the meringue to yam ratio was a little off. Too much meringue, but still super tasty. I also had the hush puppies which were pork this week. They were delightful. I thought super well priced for how many you get. The sauce that came with them I didn't care for, but that's more just a taste thing. (I hate dill but I also don't think it said anywhere what the dipping sauce was). My fiancé had the Nashville hot chicken and he said it was amazing. Giving 4 stars for value

Yelp
Was in the middle for some southern food so decided to give this place a try! I'll start by saying Biscuits were better than the cornbread but it was a big debate at the table. We really liked the pimento cheese too! All of the entrees were huge and we all had plenty leftover. The fried chicken was good but wasn't outstanding for me and the mashed potatoes were just okay. The short rib was very tasty though! The server was very kind and offered plenty of suggestions! There was only street parking so we did end up a little bit a walk but no big deal!

Yelp
We snagged the last available table for Father's Day brunch and the service and food were both wonderful! You can never go wrong with their daiquiris lol and since this is the first time we came here for the brunch we wanted to try the royale. The eggs weren't really my thing but the toast, grits, potatoes, bacon and sausage were on point! I love the jam that came with the toast and my kids enjoyed the bacon lol
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
This place is the most underwhelming "fancy" dinner places I have ever been to. I tried the Nashville Chicken Sandwich as it was the special that night and it had no flavor, it was just pure grease. I barely touched it after a few bites as it was making me sick. The only shinning star was the corn bread which is sad for how expensive everything was. We didn't order any alcoholic drinks and it was over $100 for 2 people with no dessert too.

Yelp
We went here for the first time for our anniversary. We were not disappointed! Excellent and friendly service. When they found out it was our anniversary, they gave us a complimentary champagne toast. I followed that with a hurricane that had a nicer punch to it. The food was outstanding. We had 3 delicious biscuits to start; I could have just eaten just those all night. Next was my shrimp and grits, with a huge side of collard greens. Hubby had jambalaya with smoked chicken, sausage, and shrimp. Excellent choice for our celebratory dinner.

Yelp
Absolutely love Toutant! Great, well prepared cocktails. Delicious cornbread and Nashville hot chicken. Always enjoy dining here!

Yelp
The Fried Chicken dish was fantastic but the gumbo left something to be desired. The restaurant decor is very cute and it is a great date night spot. The sauces they provide should be sold and EVERyONE should try.

Yelp
The food here rivals any cajun/creole I have enjoyed anywhere. Had a lovely experience/evening here in downtown Buffalo. We sat at the bar (not by choice) so it's not really fair to evaluate "service"-but the bartenders did a great job serving food and keeping up with the drinks. Highly professional gentlemen. The place was hopping! A little loud, but I guess that is part of the experience, and maybe I am getting a little old!
google avatar

Yelp
Went for brunch and it's a really cool spot! Solid drinks and a really nice menu, and had an absolutely delicious country fried steak and gravy. Also had the biscuit and jam and the biscuit was perfection! Service was on point and friendly. Check it out!

Yelp
We had a wonderful time at Toutant! I've been here a few times and the food and ambiance are always on point but last night was extra special. The waitress was very friendly and asked if we were celebrating anything tonight and we shared that yes in fact we were celebrating my fiance's new job. Just minutes later the Manager Adam arrived at our table with the drinks we ordered and glasses of champagne to toast to, so very kind and indeed giving us a beautiful dining experience. Our waitress was also very kind and the food came out pretty quick although it was a full house and we had one of last reservations for the night. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits with egg and my finace ordered the Gumbo and the cast iron cornbread to share. The food arrived hot, steamy, and absolutely delicious. The flavors in all the dishes married perfectly together and we had to share many bites of each as we couldn't decide who had the better entree. My cocktail was the Hurricane and it was a perfect combo of sweet and rum with that soft, chewable, popcorn ice you know and love. We finished with the Ooey Gooey Cake and the name didn't disappoint. This cake was so good and warm! This place really has my heart--and appetite for life. 5

Yelp
Ooh I love Toutant. Delicious brunch and dinner. I mostly like the jambalaya and fried chicken. They always have good brunch pastries and offer French press coffee, too! Cool vibe and unique multi-story restaurant. Great cocktails and I've regularly had accommodating. Friendly staff. They can accommodate larger parties as well but I do recommend reservations especially for busy weekend nights and brunch.
google avatar

Claire S.

Yelp
Toutant is consistently good for me, but not great. Cornbread is always incredible. Shrimp and grits was good - glad they could make it without the tomato for my preferences. I go back with friends if it's their spot of choice!
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere. Really enjoyed the jambalaya and corn bread. Everyone raved about their dishes.
google avatar

Yelp
Dined as a couple here on a weeknight after work. The service was AMAZING! Our food came out super fast and was absolutely delicious. Great southern comfort food done in an upscale way. We were seated on the third floor of the restaurant which made for a cozy space and nice view. Wasn't an issue for us but if you are planning to come with someone with mobility issues I would inquire ahead of time about options regarding the stairs.
google avatar

Keri D.

Yelp
This place is alot bigger than I thought. The food and drinks were great. The staff was very attentive and made sure the woman we were there with, who has many allergies, was taken care of. My biscuits and gravy was delicious, and we will be back again for sure.
google avatar

Amy H.

Yelp
The restaurant was a fun vibe with the employees being very attentive to you. We ordered hush puppies to start. They were good with the hot sauce mixed with the sauce that came in the basket, but they didn't have any sort of flavor alone and that was disappointing. Then, we ordered the Nashville hot chicken and mashed potatoes, the chicken was nice and spicy and the mashed potatoes tasted like instant potatoes with a little flavor sprinkled in. The half-fried buttermilk chicken was tasteless, but very well-fried and moist on the inside. the collards were overpowered with vinegar and no other seasonings. Being from the South, I was expecting lots of seasonings and flavor, which I did not get. The collards need some ham, onions, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper, and vinegar on the side. The buttermilk chicken needs flavor in the buttermilk soak and in the flour before frying.

Yelp
While Staying in Buffalo my fiancé and I decided we wanted to try out some local restaurants in the area. We came across Toutant and we're impressed by the menu and the jams they offered. We weren't very hungry so we got the biscuits with the preserves they had in season. I'm from Alabama and when I tell you, we know biscuits. We know our biscuits. With that being said, I was blown away by the quality, texture, taste, and softness of the biscuit! My fiancé loved their hot sauce so much he purchased a bottle of each to take home with us. Amazing little spot! Definitely worth visiting.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Everything is good on the menu, the service is always attentive and it's busy. Tells you something! The hush puppies and gumbo are a must! The drinks have something for everyone. The spot is in one of Buffalos older buildings tastefully decorated. When you make a reservation. They take thought into special requests. Like allergies or an anniversary. Our go to for special occasions.
google avatar

Shala W.

Yelp
Toutant atmosphere is 10/10. They change up their drink menu very frequently so it is great to try their new drinks when you dine in. I am a big fan of their shrimp and grits. It is the perfect comfort food that I wish I could eat everyday. The service is another kicker. They make you feel at home like I would want to give the chef a kiss on the forehead. The bacon is a perfect crisp, like a ripe apple on a fall day. Toutant is definitely my weekend brunch go to!
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic service, mouth watering food, and the drinks were the cherry on top. I just left and I wanna turn around and go back in!

Yelp
Toutant in Buffalo, NY, earns a solid four-star rating for its brunch offerings that showcase a delightful fusion of Southern-inspired flavors. The brunch menu at Toutant is a testament to culinary creativity, offering a diverse range of dishes that blend classic brunch staples with a Southern twist. The use of high-quality, locally sourced ingredients is evident, contributing to the freshness and authenticity of the flavors. The ambiance is vibrant and inviting, creating a comfortable space for enjoying a leisurely brunch. The service is attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience. While the brunch at Toutant doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of a five-star rating, it remains a standout choice for those seeking a unique and flavorful brunch experience in Buffalo, NY.

Yelp
This was my first time, and I went for brunch. To say it was amazing would be a true understatement! The building itself has a hip feel to it. Downstairs is a large bar with TVs and plenty of seating. We made reservations so we ate upstairs. We had a nice view overlooking the restaurant. The service was wonderful, and second only to the food itself! I got the breakfast royale, which was a sampling of many of the items (great recommendation from the waiter!). The sausage and bacon were cured in-house and out of this world! The bacon was a slightly thicker cut, which suited it well. It also had eggs with great seasoning(I am meh about eggs, but these I would eat all day!), potatoes, and grits. Oh the creamy, buttery grits. The mimosas topped off the meal. I WILL be back... and soon!
google avatar

Trevor H.

Yelp
Phenomenal time here. Excellent service from the staff and had a great time with friends. Can't forget about the food which was delicious, plus the atmospheric environment that completed the package here. Definitely give this place a visit when you can.
google avatar

Lex H.

Yelp
It was pretty good, I am not a huge dark meat person. Way overly priced for the food you are getting. You have to pay for sides! Our drinks were great. It is a prime location and it's a cute spot. We had a friendly server as well. It was fast!
google avatar

Jess K.

Yelp
Fantastic service, delicious meals. Fabulous cocktails, but it's usually super busy so beware of a possible wait! I love their dinners and brunch options too; always a great time!

Yelp
Great food great drinks it's kinda pricey but it's definitely worth it I even bought the loup gardo hot sauce

Yelp
After being here many many times after my last review, I felt the need to update it and I'm disappointed that I still cannot rate higher than 5 stars. This place is easily one of my top 3 restaurants in Buffalo. Their chicken is out of this world, it even stays crispy the next day...how do they do that?!?! My best recommendations for you would be to go for Sunday brunch and get their cinnamon roll, it is the size of your head. Then get the shrimp and grits, the smooth flavorful tomato sauce they put ontop will have you drooling every time you think of it. Then absolutely get their Nashville hot chicken. It's spicy! But that's what the pickles are for, to cool that down for you! I love that this restaurant has 3 floors to it. Sometimes the third floor can seem a bit crowded and enclosed when the blinds are closed. There are bathrooms available on floor 1 & 3. The first floor is specifically for the bar and the hightops. They have a wonderful whisky collection year round. If you prefer tequila/vodka, those are usually only carried in the summer months (according to our waitress). The food portions are huge and you will definitely be full with any meal you get!
google avatar

Kady H.

Yelp
I'm not sure what took me so long to come here (besides COVID) but wow! This was probably the best service/food I've experienced in a restaurant in a long time. The service was great and our waiter and the bussers(?) were all very friendly and attentive. I also appreciate the fact that cold water was serviced in the carafe (unlike many places where it's room temperature). The food was amazing - I would come back for the hush puppies alone. That, the corn bread, the gumbo, was all hot and super fresh. The prices aren't crazy either. The only tip I have is for a more diverse cocktail menu (more than bourbon/whiskey). Other than that, everything was great. Will be coming back.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
The food was excellent, cooked perfectly and the staff were amicable in their service.

Yelp
This past Sunday was my first brunch at Toutant and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I've been wanting to check out Toutant for awhile but it's always so tough to get a reservation but I wish I'd put in that effort sooner! We made a reservation and were seated promptly on the 3rd floor which had a nice view. We were quickly greeted and given the rundown of the menu and specials. You can tell the server was truly passionate about the food which greatly added to the vibe! He also explained the kitchen can do their best to work with any dietary restrictions which was great to hear. I ordered the coffee along with the biscuits and gravy (I requested gravy on the side). The coffee had a chicory flavor which was truly reminiscent of NoLa. The biscuits and gravy were truly out of this world. The biscuits were perfectly fluffy and the fried egg was perfectly cooked. I had some bites of the hash and the ooey gooey cake which all blew me away! Overall, everything from the menu, service and presentation was on point. The food was served promptly and warm! I have to come back to try more brunch items and dinner / cocktails! It's well worth it.

Yelp
My wife rates the Po Boy as best anywhere! Why? The bread (baked on premise) is incredible
google avatar

Rich J.

Yelp
I will start by saying you have to stop and have a meal at this restaurant. It was the best meal that had of Southern or Louisiana cuisine since being in New Orleans. Our server, Mitchell, outstanding, very attentive, very personable. Great personality. Food was outstanding I highly recommend the jambalaya, and if you get a chance to have the burnt ends, you'll enjoy those also. Their biscuits with fresh homemade jam and pimento cheese. Great appetizer. Cornbread is also very good. And the top things all off they make a great Sazerac. Put this restaurant on your list!
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
Amazing food and atmosphere! Always seated right away and servers are attentive. Brunch is my favorite been there a bunch of times for it.
google avatar

Cesar P.

Yelp
This place is such a nice and warm atmosphere. The second floor dining room was very nice, love the the brick and dark wood floors. The service was awesome, cocktails, food were all great. I had the barbecue hash and It was a perfect balance of savory and spicy (not like hot spicy but a good tingly spice) my girlfriend had the breakfast royal and she enjoyed all of it and she's a picky eater. One thing that enjoyed is the presentation of the food and the fact that I didn't feel overwhelmed with the food. It's always a nice touch when the service asks if there are any allergies, shows that they're very accommodating. I 100% recommended this place for a brunch spot. They have a very adept bar that's stocked with multiple options so there is something for everyone.

Yelp
Came on down to downtown Buffalo for my cousins birthday dinner. I haven't been here in awhile this was my second time here. A little tip if you come in a group try and carpool...parking is hard to find. I was lucky enough to find off street parking. We did make reservations ahead of time. Everything went smooth. Our waiter Tory was amazing! She was very nice. The food was good! We all had a great time.

Deleasha D.

Yelp
Clean Soul Food that is portioned well. Delicious brisket. Super tender and flavorful.
google avatar

Lynda T.

Yelp
Consistently excellent food, service, and cocktails. I highly recommend the shrimp and grits (as good or better than you will get in the south), fried chicken, and the Jambalaya. Save room for the ooey gooey cake or bread pudding for dessert.
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
This place leaving my taste buds playing the saxophone while dancing down bourbon street. Food ... the food is outstanding. We had hush puppies, buttermilk biscuits, gumbo, jambalaya, and the rib eye. Oh and beignets , ooey gooey cake, and bread pudding. We were in The Big Easy in June and the food here is just as good as it is there. There isn't a meal I've had here that I don't like. Atmosphereit's just a really cool vibe. parking is a bit rough. And it's a bit loud near the bar. But the cool light fixtures, candles, and rustic features are great compliments. Cleanliness. spotless. Friendliness. our server, Abby, was great. She was so sweet and knew the menu really well. Making reservations was simple. The ladies on the phone were very friendly. This place has to be one of the best places in Buffalo. We will be back.

Madison M.

Yelp
Nick was amazing! We came in a big group and Nick helped us with everything we needed. 5/5

Yelp
Stopped in for brunch last weekend, it was a bit busy and crowded. Finally we were seated in kind of a cramped space against the wall, the place is a little tight I kept getting bumped by serves but I'm not one to care much about the atmosphere as long as the food is good. I will say the food was excellent. First, they have outstanding coffee, chicory flavor gives it that real french Creole taste. I normally wouldn't rave about coffee but I appreciate a place that seeks out a true gourmet blend. The food it self was prepared very well. The shrimp salad although not a breakfast item was the perfect balance of greens and shrimp. The shrimp were cooked perfectly. My friends all got a skillet which they raved about. Overall I thought the food was great, very good brunch spot and I've heard great things for dinner as well. I will absolutely be stopping back in again.

Jeanne E.

Yelp
I LOVE this restaurant and Chef James! I have never had anything bad. My mouth is watering just thinking about his food and the New Orleans style yummy complex flavors he uses. His new restaurant, Compass Run, is also very good.

Yelp
Buffalo is filled with great restaurants! Whether you're looking for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, you'll find something good. Then there is great! That's where Toutant comes in. Toutant is a southern inspired restaurant located downtown. Parking could be difficult on the street, but there are pay to park lots available. As you're walking down Ellicott, you could miss it if you're not looking for it. It's very unassuming when you walk in. It's industrial, smaller restaurant look/feel could throw you off, until you realize it's three floors. The menu is refined and solid. Not too busy, with just enough to choose from. Recently, a group of us went for brunch. I would highly recommend reservations for brunch as it does fill up quickly. We started with the appetizer special of cinnamon sugar pork rinds and added the classic pimento cheese. The warmth of the crispy pork melted the creamy pimento. The thought of cinnamon sugar and spice seemed odd until you ate it. It was a great start to the meal. For entrees, the four of us decided to split four meals, just because we didn't want to have food envy of each other. I'm glad we did because I would have been jealous of everything I didn't order! We split the Biscuits & Gravy, Nashville Hot Chicken, Shrimp and Grits, and the Barbeque Hash. The biscuits were soft and flaky while the sausage gravy was smooth and delicious, topped with two eggs cooked to your liking. The Nashville Hot Chicken was thigh meat piled on top of thick Texas toast and topped with house made pickles. I am normally not a fan of dark/thigh meat, but it was so tender and the batter on the chicken held its crunch all the way through. The Shrimp and Grits were the second best I've ever had, with the best being in New Orleans. The medium sized gulf shrimp were cooked perfectly and placed on a bed of creamy grits bathed in a light tomato broth. Lastly was the Barbeque Hash. This was my least favorite of the bunch. It was a skillet loaded with tater tots, and topped with smoked pork, root vegetables and two eggs cooked to your liking. Don't be confused by the flavor and taste of the Barbeque Hash. Although it was my least favorite of the four entrees', it was still delicious! Wash it all down with one of their delicious cocktails, choosing from their wide selection of bourbon/whiskey. Or you can just roll the dice and go with their Striker Special, which is a beer and shot of their choice. No matter what you decide, make sure Toutant is on your list whether it be for a night out or Sunday Funday!

Yelp
I'm always up for a venue that has a cajun/creole flare on the menu and with all the rave reviews, I figured Toutant would be a solid choice. Why the three stars, you might ask? WAITSTAFF Polite, friendly, with the right amount of attentiveness. Definitely one of Toutant's assets! AMBIANCE The bar area is where it's at. Toutant definitely has a solid old time, southern bar look and the drink selection to match. FOOD Meh. As this was my primary reason for coming, I was disappointed. Started with some freshly shucked oysters which were tasty, despite the mignonette consisting mostly of shallots. I thought a small bowl of gumbo would be a solid next step, but I was shocked at how underwhelming the flavors were. I figure the main dish would be a winner, Nashville Hot Chicken, but I was wrong again. After reading reviews, I realize those who provided four or five stars mentioned the waitstaff, drinks, and appetizers. If that's what you're interested in and you've got a small group of friends looking for a fun place to hang out, Toutant is your destination. If you're only going for food, however, I'd keep walkin'.
