Visited Town Tonic on a Saturday morning around 10 am, and unlike most Chch brunch places, the place was barely alive with only four other patrons. I was a little nervous, but we chose to stay and were seated at a tall top table by the window. I suppose the crew that visited Town Tonic into the wee hours of the morning were still sleeping off their hangovers.
Our waiter was a little quirky, but friendly and efficient. We ordered an americano and a trim flat white. They both arrived quickly. The menu is very concise which makes choosing your entree easy. There are your breakfast classics: muesli or french toast, but the rest of the menu features eclectic specialty items that are impeccably prepared: Mexican Salad, Duck Liver, French Sardines, vegetarian options or the Gourmet Croque Madame.
The croque madame was served on thick slices of bread with prosciutto "really good cheese" (their words, not mine), mustard all drowned in truffle oil with a fried egg on top. If you're not a true fan of truffle oil, this sandwhich will be a bit overwhelming by the second half, but the first half will be amazing. I ate every bite.
The large hot breakfast looked like something straight from a mexican restaurant: Mushrooms, potatoes with jalapeños, tomatoes, a fried egg. My husband licked the plate clean and said this is one of his all time favorite meals in Christchurch (he didn't even save me a bite).
We were very pleased with our breakfast option and recommend this joint to anyone in the area to check out for breakfast, lunch, dinner or drinks!
