"As an open-minded and mixed use venue, Trafó House of Contemporary Arts is one of the capital’s most avantgarde institutions. It showcases many genres from dance to new circus, music to visual arts in a unique and authentic manner." - Budapest Design Week
"Trafó House of Contemporary Art This funky venue for experimental art of all kinds—theater, visual art, dance, performance, music, even circus arts—began as a transformer station, then later sat empty for 40 years until a group of artists began squatting there in the early 1990s. The city of Budapest bought and officially renovated the spaces, opening Trafó in 1998. The wildly varied program has been going strong ever since with event spaces, an exhibition room, and even a basement club for discourse and literary nights. Expect cutting-edge performances and an intellectual, offbeat crowd."
Loved it!
+ realistic prices
+ nice, cozy atmosphere (great for studying or a friendly brunch)
+ delicious vegetarian and vegan options available
+ English-speaking staff, no tourists
+ great events- the place has an artistic vibe
+ dog friendly
- the only negativity was the lack of warm food during weekdays (on weekends they have amazing brunches- I checked it out previously) but they have soups, sandwiches, and cakes that make up for a lunch after all!
This lunch you see in the photos + a vegan cappuccino was around 6000huf in total

We ordered two cups of coffee. Waited for 20 minutes for that. Shortage of staff is causing hugeeee problems and delay. Everyone was annoyed this morning. people cancelled their order because they were waiting 20+ minutes for a cup of tea. The waitresses are trying their best but it’s less than satisfying. Please, owner, pay attention, this is very awkward.

I strongly recommend the coffee place, the owner is very friendly and the Bombay Chai was amazing! They use natural species to prepare it. Also, the place is cozy and full of plants! I love it!

Trafó is an absolute gem of Budapest. Not your average performances here, always something unusual and inspiring. The building itself is wonderfully designed. The prices are always very reasonable and I look forward to coming here many more times in the future. Get a ticket for a show and you won't regret it.
