The 6 Best Hostels in Melbourne in 2025

"This no-frills hostel is one of the cheapest in the city and I like that it caters to long-term travelers with a usual minimum three-night stay and discounts for week-plus stays, which makes it easier to connect with people. I also love the huge, well-stocked kitchen (handy since eating out adds up), dorms with basic bunks and decent mattresses, plenty of outlets for charging, and lots of live music nearby — it’s ideal for solo long-term travelers and digital nomads looking for affordability and social opportunities." - Matthew Kepnes

Stayed here in and out over a few weeks whilst I was looking for a more permanent place to live and had a great time. Evan and Nick are very nice and helpful. Great people, great location and everything you'd expect in a hostel. Has been and will continue to be my go to place for whenever I need short term accomodation in Melbourne in the future!

Originally came to stay 1 month, spent 1 year in this hostel that felt more like home then anything else. Being in the centre of Fitzroy allows you to be part of a full of life neighbourhood, the owners are the sweetest and most considerate person you could hope for this kind of experience (Evan loud voice and grumpy jokes will be missed). Thanks to everyone who made this journey special. Margarita, Jon, Evan, Alex and especially Nike, souls full of love and care. Hope to be able to come visit again !

An initial 2 night booking turned into 4! Evan was most friendly and hospitable! Local eateries, coffee and small supermarket close by! Melbourne's famous Tram is metres away! I look forward to returning!

I have travelled all over the world What can I say about this place? It should be condemned and shut down as soon as possible. I repeat with capital letters. It should be shut down. The owner Evan is rude arrogant While you are sleeping, he opens your bedroom door walks in and scares you while you are sleeping. They enter your room while you are not there. I have never seen a kitchen dining or lounge room so dirty in my life you sit there watch TV and you see about 20 mouses about 30 cockroaches crawling all over the kitchen table and kitchen facilities I was watching TV and a mouse jumped over me. I totally freaked out. I do not recommend to stay there That’s my experience

Evan the owner was very helpful in accommodating me short term with little notice. I needed a place to stay for a couple nights and I was welcomed. Evan is a nice man who has stories of his own if you ever get to talking with him. The rooms were tidy and neat, nothing special but it gets the job done. Convenient location with the tram right out front and coffee around the corner. Walls were a little thin and you can hear the train coming back and forth but it wasn't an issue for me. The kitchen setup is nice for making your own meals and there is a couch space to sit back and have a chat with others or watch a movie. Overall good experience and a very welcoming space.

I arrived in the middle of the night. Joan, the owner, had put a key for me on the door, so that I could go to bed and check in the next day. That was very lovely. Was a bit skeptical when I first got in. The hostel is just not what I’m used to. It wasn’t the cleanest. I think the bathrooms got a deep cleaning once or twice a week. But there were only like 30 people staying there, so that was fine. Lot of long-timers, but I didn’t feel like an outsider. I was staying for two weeks, which felt a bit too long for me in this hostel to be honest. Because it’s in Fitzroy, so not really near the city centre. Wish I was a bit closer to the centre. But for the price I paid per night (18 euros) I really couldn’t complain!

I had a positive 3 night stay here and would recommend the hostel to others seeking cheap accommodation with one of the best locations in Melbourne- in the heart of Fitzroy and in close range of all inner Melbourne suburbs. The beds were clean and adequately comfortable. The communal area was reasonably well equipped and comfortable, although quiet during my stay over the Easter weekend. Be prepared for some minor street noise as expected in such a central location. Also of course, as in any dorm room, expect some roommate or other to wander in and switch the lights on in the middle of the night, while everyone is trying to sleep- comes with the territory. Evan who runs the hostel has an old school approach- showing some respect will go a long way when interacting with him. Have some patience, he is perfectly friendly and interesting to chat with. He also runs an effective service with his team, largely made up by family I believe. Over the phone he helped identify my dates having been booked incorrectly, then re-booked, transacted my payment and bypassed Hostelworld to save me the cost of their surcharge. He also assured me of a secure space to store my bicycle in the hostel which was helpful. Having read in previous reviews that the hostel took in misplaced people during covid hardships only further convinces me that this is a hostel worth supporting. Thanks Evan and team.

I was unsure if I should make this post. I didn’t want to upset the family that are good people and have provided me a good hostel in the past. However, potential future visitors of Melbourne should be informed of what this hostel was and what to expect now. They deserve a good experience in such a fantastic city. In the past this was a good youth hostel. I visited it biannually whenever I needed a bed in Melbourne. It had friendly young travellers, it was safe, clean and in a good location. The owner was quirky and liked to chat. He could get grumpy, but it wasn’t anything you wouldn’t expect from a family run business. You will see good reviews and nice pictures online from this time. The hostel has changed since then. The owners attitude is deteriorating and this is impacting the guests experience. He will be rude ,abrupt and treat the guests like they are a nuisance. Any interaction with him may result in a lecture. The demographic has changed as well. During covid the government paid the hostel to take in disadvantaged people. The hostel guests are now homeless men. I didn’t feel my belongings were safe in public areas. Young travellers and women may feel safer elsewhere. If you would like a nice experience go to another hostel.
