On the Grid : Trang Bakery & Cafe

"I love Trang Bakery! Located in the northern end of Smith St, this is my favourite place in all of Melbourne to score a banh mi (Vietnamese rolls). I simply love the colours and tastes that are brought together. It's fresh, delicious, and super affordable. They could not be friendlier and it's quick. Stop reading this and go there now." - Studio Fellow

The best banh mi on smith street!!! Nothing better than a vegan duck banh mi & vegie spring rolls from here. Bread is fresh and fillings are generous. The people who work here are so so so lovely as well, we are regulars and they always recognise us & give a warm welcome.

THE banh mi spot in Melbourne. Absolutely stuffed with fillings, saucy, spicy, crispy. It’s a must try

August 2024 Still super tasty pork rolls and quick service. Good value. _____________________________________ Super quick service in this very busy cafe. My crispy pork roll was very good, and this place does not hold back on spice, which is excellent. The ingredients were fresh, although the pork was cold, and the bun was dry. My partners vegan chicken roll was good, too. Overall, this was a solid experience.

Most insane banh mi; juicy, fresh, delicious. Iced coffee and spring rolls also good

2024: Great flavours, quick service, very impressive given the two person operation. Had the Trang Special, with grilled meatballs, but will need to come back for the crispy pork.

Big portion and cheap Grilled chicken is very juice and seasonings are so good. With the veges inside which balances the grilled chicken so it’s taste fresh. The bread is very crunchy outside which is very enjoyable. Overall, it’s a good choice for a meal or just dessert.

Lived off Victoria St Abbotsford for a while and I'm very impressed with my first banh mis here. Really well filled with both meat and vegetables. Crispy pork doesn't have too much fat, crisp skin, nicely salty and Trang Special (slightly smoky nem nuong and char siu) is a great combo. All are $11, which is the higher end but it's very good for that price. Will be back.

For any lover of Banh Mi you need to come to this Collingwood institution. There is a reason that Trang commands a queue of people waiting for their crispy Banh Mi delights and it's because they definitely do make one of the best, if not the best in town! From roll to home made pate / signature sauce and amazing roast pork I spot no fault in this roll and if you catch them when the bread comes out fresh and hot it's a whole other level of foodgasm for sure. Freshly baked large Banh Mi rolls all at a very affordable $10 alongside stuffed to the brim with their signature crispy crunchy and tasty roast pork is a must try. With plenty of other tasty options to try.

Yelp
I AM SO ABOUT THIS. When you are starving but don't need anything *too* fancy, maybe you're in a hurry or just want a casual lunch while bargain hunting on Smith Street, Trang is your one and only destination. It doesn't look like much from the outside (or from the inside for that matter) but their Vietnamese Rolls are AH-MAY-ZING. I always go for the crispy pork roll with extra chilli. It is enormous (quite literally the size of your head) and you will definitely have to sit down to eat it - this is not a walk-and-talk lunch sandwich. There are only two tables and they are both outside (which can be a bit rough on a summer day) so I recommend grabbing one to go and sitting in a nearby park or just scoffing it down ashamedly in your car. It's Smith Street, you'll be fine. FYI no booze available, just water and soft drinks in bottles from the fridge.

Yelp
Bánh mì, the King of sandwiches. The Alpha. The Omega. The George Clooney of bread filled delights. Once you've tried a bánh mì, you'll forsake all sangas in their favour. Trang Bakery & Cafe offers a myriad of options when it comes to filling your white or brown crusty roll. There's no tricked up trendy items here, but they do take it a notch above your traditional bánh mì shop with the likes of freshly carved pork belly and sliced chicken breast. You can still get Vietnamese"pate" and "mayonnaise" (I use quotation marks only because they hardly resemble their namesake) and loads of crunchy pickly veggies along with some not-so-usual additions like roasted red capsicum paste and fried shallots. The staff here are patient and will step you through the sandwich assembly process asking if you want this or that if you're not sure what you're after. The fact that the whole thing costs less than a fiver is extraordinary. Pro tip: On a nice day, try and score one of the few tables out front to enjoy your sandwich. Trust me, you'll want to sit down for this.

Yelp
I like their vegan lemongrass tofu banh mi and eggplant tempura. It's also quite the affordable lunch option.

Yelp
Finally tried this place out. I had read that they did good vegan/vegetarian salad roll options. I tried the eggplant tempura and it was delicious. Eggplant was slightly warm and very soft. Lots of salad and chilli. Good value at only $5.50. Will be back to try other vegan options.
