"The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, which changed names over the years and was known as the Weston State Hospital later in life—operated from 1864 to 1994.  Today it stands as a testimony to the inhumane practices once used in mental health. Sitting on 26.5 acres, this spooky area is home to numerous buildings, including a museum, a gift shop where a few of the remaining employees still work, and an abandoned cemetery. Famous for its looming structure, it was built using the Kirkbride design, a design common to asylums of the early 19th century. Much of the asylum remains closed off to the general public as the main building and out-buildings are in bad repair and are structurally unsound. A wide choice of tours are available, and specialty supernatural/ghost hunts, even overnighters are available for those searching for tortured spirits who have yet to escape." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

We came here for a mid afternoon tour. It was all 4 flights and the medical center and I couldn't recommend it more. There's spots where it doesn't seem as bad as it's normally portrayed. Our tour guide, John, was fantastic during the 90 minute tour. He grew up in the area and had a vast amount of knowledge about the place. Not necessarily what you would read from a book. If you happen to get John you will be very lucky. The middle parts have slowly been restored but the wings have been left unchanged largely . Very interested in coming back for a evening or overnight tour

This place is amazing! We did the 90 minute daytime paranormal tour and it was great. Our tour guide was fun and informative. She did an amazing job. Although we didn’t get to experience anything paranormal we’re still going back for the overnight tour sometime. Definitely recommend this

We were looking for an interesting October activity. We decided to come to the lunatic asylum as a pre-halloween destination. It was well worth the drive. There were several different tours we could have selected from. They even have night time flashlight paranormal tours. The tours are all very reasonably priced and very informative. We selected the 45-minute history tour. The tour included the first floor and was a general history tour of the asylum. We did consider going and doing the criminally insane tour. Although we did not take the 90 minute tour, I am sure it was even better than the 45-minute tour. If you are looking for a fun October activity, this is definitely your destination. Bree was awesome for our overnight tour that we took the first weekend of November 2024! She is very knowledgable about the history of the building and the patients. She also did good by giving us just enough information for each floor we reached to leave us intrigued but not to overwhelmed with so many details we get bored. The building itself is beautiful in so many ways! It’s impossible to see everything in one stay. It’s definitely worth the money for an overnight stay! And like I said, if you get Bree as your guide you won’t be disappointed. Also make sure you bring something to drink (nonalcoholic as alcohol and drugs are prohibited) and a flash light with extra batteries if you’re staying the night. The fact that there is zero lighting in about 90% of the building makes it way better.

We stumbled upon this place while visiting another venue. On the way back we were able to grab a tour and it was great. It was awesome seeing inside and hearing about the facilities history. Lindsay did a great job giving the tour. It’s nice that the money raised goes back into fixing up the buildings.

We did the 90 min VIP tour that took us to all the floors. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and informative. This tour is only offered on Wed and it has a great mix of history, architecture and paranormal. I liked the old parts of the asylum much more than the newer renovated parts, as they had an eerie feel to them. I do recommend taking the early tour (12:30pm) if you can. Our was 3:30-5:00pm and by then this little town is pretty much closed.

This gives the vibe of Urbanx without the dangers! Also they allow dogs on the tour which is a bonus! Very cool and a must see for any lover of dark history!

This place is amazing just for the history and architecture. They do several different types of tours that you can sign up for onsite although I’d recommend looking into them before you get there to ensure what you want to see is being offered at the time you’re there. Best part - it’s pet friendly! Bring some treats and poop bags and your best furry friend(s) can tour with you! You will have to sign a waiver but they have an easy way to do that if you don’t get it done before you arrive. Plan to go back and tour more of the site when I have more time!!
