It tickles me that drive-ins still exist at all, such a throw-back pastime. But they are still around. Drive-ins somehow have the power to detach us from our handheld-screen-lords, and all look up at a collective experience, for a change. And the fact that we have such a great one in the 716-area is a blessing. We moved back to WNY about 8 years ago, and have been back at the Transit Drive-In for at least a couple movies a season ever since.
This year during pandemic times, we've been twice for a couple family-friendly double features: Jurassic Park / Jaws (mostly family-friendly), and Despicable Me / Minions. Even during non-pandemic times, Transit Drive-In regularly has retro nights, which we love. We've seen Gremlins and Field of Dreams on the big screens here in years past; such a treat to see those classics live large again. We've been for many new releases too, and they all are presented well on the screens here, listening from your vehicle radio.
There are five screens, all with decent capacity for parking many cars. Even if it is a sell-out, there are pole markers that keep cars spaced well, which is important for the current social-distancing situation. We have a big ole' rockin' vintage party van, and park towards the back row so we can face our rear doors to the screen, roll down our back bed, and snuggle up for a comfy movie experience. Vehicles that prefer to watch from the trunk always line up in the back, and regular cars that face-forward can park anywhere. If you're new to the drive-in experience, no worries, there are lots of attendants around to help you find your screen and get set up.
Ticket prices seem a bit high to me, but I'm a cheap'o, so maybe my perspective is skewed. It's currently $10 per adult and $6 per kid under 12. You can pre-pay online for easy, contact'less arrival. I miss the days of the car-load sale, when everyone could pile in for one price. But one of the perks of the drive-in is you can bring your own snacks to save dough on concessions, so that saves you a chunk right there. We have tried a few things from the concession, and they are better-priced here than a movie theater. The $3 cheeseburger isn't a bad deal.
To sum it up, LOVE the Transit Drive-In. We'll continue to come here as long as they are around. We'll DEFINITELY be there in September this year when the new Bill & Ted's movie releases. I am a longtime Keanu fan, (since Rush Rush, yup, pretty fitting for this review, wink, wink, a'hem, a'hem), and am soooooooooo looking forward to that most excellent night. So we'll see you there, dudes!
