We loved this hotel. The rooms in the lodge are large, clean, and comfy. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The food at the restaurant is excellent. We especially liked the breakfast restaurant with its big windows and homey vibe. We think they served the best breakfasts we had in Costa Rica. The location is a bit removed from the downtown area so it was quiet. We enjoyed having tea while sitting in the garden after a day of activities. The place felt like we were staying at our grandparents home, in all the right ways. We highly recommend this place.

Family and I spent two nights here. We really enjoyed our stay at the Trapp Family Hotel. The rooms were spacious, peaceful, and relaxing—perfect for unwinding after exploring the beautiful cloud forest. While the beds could be a bit more comfortable (the mattress was on the firm side and the pillows weren’t our favorite), the overall experience made up for it. The hotel has a nostalgic 70’s vibe that adds a unique and fun character to the place. Breakfast was tasty and satisfying, and the staff were absolutely wonderful—kind, helpful, and welcoming. I also really love and respect their sign at the entrance saying they don’t allow sex tourism and aim to protect minors from sexual exploitation. 🙌🏼🙏🏼❤️ It’s a great spot to feel connected to nature while still having the comforts of a hotel. We would definitely stay here again. 🌲💚

Very nice hotel close to the entrance Monteverde Cloud forest reserve. We had a mountain suite which was spacious and had a nice view over the garden and the surrounding forest. The room was clean. Very friendly staff. As the hotel is located a bit far from town, we ate almost all meals at the hotel and the food was delicious.

A great hotel for a great price. Some of the negative reviews are a little misleading, if you come here expecting a Waldorf Astoria in a rain forest you will be disappointed but that’s not what this hotel is going for. Some say there’s bugs in the room, I didn’t see a single one but it is in the middle of a cloud forest and this is an eco friendly hotel so a bug or two might be found… if that’s a huge deal for you I recommend you stay at a Hilton in San Jose. Others say the decor is dated, this is more of a boutique hotel and I believe they match the vibe they’re going for and the landscape that surrounds it, if you’re looking for modern and high tech… again, stay at a Hilton in San Jose. This is one of the few hotels I’ve stayed in where the pictures do not do it justice, the view from our mountain suite was amazing. The room was clean, spacious, secure and private, despite other reviews. The room doesn’t have A/C which threw us off at first but this is typical for the area as the cool mountain wind was more than enough for a comfortable stay with the windows cracked. The area around the hotel is surrounded by forest so it was extremely quiet and relaxing, calm enough even to see some wildlife roaming freely through the property which also means it’s a bit of a drive to town. The overall decor of the room and common areas was extremely beautiful. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, specifically the gentleman at the front desk and the gentleman that kept the bar in the evening and served us breakfast in the morning which was great for how simple it was(Typical Costa Rican breakfast). I can’t recommend this place enough. We wished we had time to stay here longer but we will definitely be back! Again, if you’re looking for high tech go elsewhere, if you’re looking for a hotel that focuses on the forest that surrounds it and allows you to enjoy what it has to offer while keeping you very comfortable, this is the place for you!

A lovely location. Right in the cloud forest, so it was good for getting to the local reserves etc. reception staff were helpful booking trips/tours. |Our room was spacious, with a lovely view. It did feel chilly/damp at times, particularly the bathroom, but you are after all in a cloud/rain forest.|Everything was very clean. I found the breakfasts to be very acceptable. A few choices served to you, so no delay at a buffet. The coffee was very good. Evening meals were also good, the portion sizes were quite big! Bar nice for a pre dinner drink, or nightcap. |The staff in all areas were very helpful, cheerful & professional. |I’d say the hotel felt it was caught in a bit of a time warp, but I mean that in a positive way!

After more than 2 weeks in CR this was not our fav place to stay: super noisy rooms ( wind and neighbors), bathroom smells and noises directly in the corridor… that was a first time! Breakfast: rather tasteless and you won’t overeat! Dinner in the restaurant was pricy and the less tasteful of our whole holidays (too bad the road is in terrible shape and pitch dark so we couldn’t drive up and down in the evening to another restaurant) In fact we fell a little trapped here! Only good for a stay if you want to be close to the national park.

We stayed three nights in the Mountain Suite at the Trapp Family Hotel in Monteverde. This the the nearest hotel to the Monteverde National Park (15 min walk). The room was spacious with very two comfortable king beds, tea/coffee facilities, large wardrobe, large shower, and a table and chairs beside the full picture window where we would relax and watch the sunset in the evenings. After our early morning trips and adventures, we were more than happy not to have to go further than the hotel restaurant each day and the food was delicious. There is a local bus that services the National Park from the nearest town Santa Elena, which will stop at the hotel. (Thank you Estefan for that tip when we asked about a taxi). We walked into Santa Elena one morning (3 miles with some great views of Lake Arenal along the way) and we took the bus back ($1.70). The gardens and whole setting were beautiful and great place to photograph the hummingbirds, wrens, thrush, tanagers and coati that frequented the grounds. The staff were excellent, welcoming and friendly and everywhere was spotless and beautifully maintained. After having stayed in a busier spa hotel in Arenal where the guest was just a number this was a refreshing change. The hotel also has plenty of facilities in place for recycling/separating waste and available taps to refill your water bottles.

The location is bad- very far out of town and nothing walkable. The restaurant is not good (even breakfast). The rooms are extremely dates (although large) and not really clean. Rooms very far from reception and straight up hill. Grounds are not well cared for and its very windy, which is fine except the roof is old and flaps and is noisy all night. Do yourself a favor and stay in town where you can walk to better food and activities. There is NOTHING to do here- no pool, no game room, no nice place to sit and watch birds. If you must stay here, make sure you have a car. I did and drove into town (was rarely there). They market it as being close to cloud forest but it doesn’t matter unless you plan to walk 3 km to the entrance. Staff not as friendly as elsewhere. Felt a bit creepy- cameras everywhere and doors do not have a good lock. Any kid with a paperclip could get in (no deadbolt). I did not like it and cannot recommend it.
