"Reportedly Scotland’s oldest inhabited house, dating back to 1107 and visited by 27 Scottish kings and queens (including Mary Queen of Scots), this is a B&B with a difference. Here, peacocks parade across manicured lawns and fabulous maze gardens, there are martinis and croquet, and log fires crackle in panelled drawing rooms. Beautiful antiques grace the four stately bedrooms, complete with canopied beds. Best of all is the Blue Bedroom, which has views onto Cupid’s Garden, making it the perfect romantic retreat."

My partner and I chose to get married at Traquair House for our intimate wedding of about 20 guests, and it was truly the best choice we could have made. We stayed there the night before, enjoyed drinks in the beautiful drawing room, and had a delicious breakfast, a perfect start to the celebrations. Everything on the wedding day looked absolutely fantastic, and the food and drinks were wonderful. The service throughout our stay and the wedding itself was flawless. They offered vegan options for the wedding menu, which was very important to us as we are both vegan, and they were incredibly mindful of guests with allergies. A very special thank you to the wonderful event coordinator Gillian and the lovely housekeeper Lucy for being so kind, helpful, caring, patient, and flexible throughout the whole process and on the days of our stay. They made everything feel effortless. All of our guests were amazed by our wedding, and we felt like the entire day was absolutely perfect. Getting married in such a beautiful historic home made the experience even more special and unforgettable. We can’t recommend the Traquair House highly enough!

We visited Traquair House as part of our search for an initimate venue for our elopement wedding and knew right away we had found our perfect location. For our wedding stay, our room (White Room) was huge but cozy, comfortable and well stocked and felt very romantic, with lovely views of the peaceful gardens. Breakfast and our romantic wedding dinner were served in the Still Room the food was absolutely delicious and we were treated like royalty. It was also great to be able to sit in the Drawing Room in the evening and soak in all that history. We were married in the chapel - such a wonderful and magical place which just mesmerised us when we first visited. And of course - special mention to all the staff, including Lucy and Rose - and especially to Gillian the wedding coordinator at Traquair who gave us our tour when we first visited and looked after us during our special day. She is an absolute star! A wonderful place which I'm sure we'll visit regularly in years to come.

We had the absolute pleasure of visiting Traquair again for our 25th wedding anniversary. We were married in the Rose Garden on 26th August 2000, and come back for a two-night stay 29th August. We weren't disappointed!! It's as magical as ever, we stayed in the Pink Room again, and had the most wonderful time exploring the house, grounds and nearby area. Breakfasts in the Still Room were amazing, and it was wonderful to meet Catherine again (and Delphi the doggie!) at breakfast on Saturday morning. Everyone was so very friendly!! We've vowed not to leave it so long again before we return. Thank you so much for making our Silver Anniversary so special|All best wishes Jacks and Jono Guinness xx

Traquair House — Scotland’s oldest inhabited house — takes on a whole new kind of magic during its Light Trail. As night falls, the historic grounds are transformed by glowing installations, twinkling pathways, and creative light displays that bring the gardens and ancient trees to life. We wandered through illuminated tree tunnels, watched colours dance across the stone walls of the house, and followed spooky cackles through the forest as the lights shifted and sparkled around us. It’s a perfect blend of history and imagination — every corner reveals something new, from glowing glowing spiders to a dancing disco ball. The event is beautifully organised, family-friendly, and has a truly enchanting atmosphere. The car park is pitch black - and for me whi relies on light for spacial awareness this because an issue when I slammed the car boot down on my head. Be careful walking down the road to the initial gazebo area - my kids fell multiple times because it was too dark to notice the speed bumps and other changes in the road surface level. Whether you come for the history, the artistry, or just a dose of Halloween magic, the Traquair House Light Trail is one of the most memorable seasonal events in the Borders — cosy, creative, and completely spellbinding.

Experienced a wonderful stay at Traquair in the White Room, which was spacious, charming with a very comfortable four posted bed and a great bathroom with a hot shower.||The use of the small blue drawing room was also a delight to spend a quiet evening reading the literature on offer. Breakfast in the still room was lovely and we must make special mention to the warm and welcoming staff. One and all were friendly.||Lovely Lucy, the housekeeper and young Emma, who both took care of us, must get special recognition in this review. ||We will be back.||Tony and Lizzie Gilks|Sussex

Enjoyed a night here, and it was a lovely experience! A real treat to stay in such a historic building. Loved the view from our room out over the maze - worth climbing the spiral staircase to the room! Also lovely to relax in the Drawing Room which is next to the other two guest rooms on the ground floor. Breakfast was very relaxed, and made with quality produce - so very tasty. Lucy, the housekeeper, looked after us really well, and the team of guides were lovely and knowledgeable as we looked around the house. The grounds are full of wildlife and good for walks.

Lovely place and full of history. We really enjoyed the visit, from the indoor rooms and collections, to the maze, gardens, coffee, and brewery. The staff is kind and passionate, always happy to help. Every room is provided with leaflets plenty of information.

Yelp
A medieval event at Traquair House! This weekend we visited a medieval fayre with a Jousting tournament, Falconry Display (of which the falcon flew away and did not return - for what I know), various minstrels singing medieval aged songs, performers informing us about various crafts and an enthusiastic executioner giving me an earful of stories about various torture instruments. What can I say: "Am I glad, I live today"! We also tried our expertise in Long Bow Archery and my arm can still feel some pain. Well, it was worth it! The house is the center point of the area and dates back to 1107 when it was used as a hunting lodge for the Kings and Queens of Scotland. In 1491 it was given to James Stuart, who became the first Laird of Traquair, and remained since then in the same family. It was renovated in the late 90's and its outer walls are painted white. You would not think that this place is so old, except if you look at the occasional dodgy windows. The inside is well maintained. There is a dressing room, library, priest room (which was a secret room during the catholic unrest), kings and queens room, main drawing room, dolls room with a fantastic doll house on display, as well as some scary looking porcelain dolls from various countries. You can also find some of the Jacobite and other relics in the museum, which were used by Mary Queen of Scots and her son James, like the baby cradle. At the entrance you will find locked gates, which won't be unlocked until a Stuart will be back on the throne once more! And not to forget the maze - best one I have ever conquered. The place has its own brewery and sells Ale's. Its open all year: Daily from 29th March - 14th April 2013; 1st May - 31st October 2013 The next fayre takes place end of July and projects the hippy 60's. Why not have some outdoor fun!
