In an inconspicous building, off the beaten track in an alley near Milan's canal district, lies the most wonderful trattoria you will ever visit.
We were three friends staying in Milan for a week, dining well at Michelin-restaurants and the like. However the best food and experience bar none, was Trattoria della Gloria.
Upon entering the premises you are immediately heartily greeted by the owner/waiter. The atmosphere is so stereotypically Italian, with the warm light, red checkered table cloths and trinkets on the wall, you almost suspect it to be a tourist trap. However we seemed to be the only foreigners there, and the waitress also seemed kind of surprised to see tourists there, when she immediately asked: "How did you find this place?".
She was prompt with the menus, talkative and spoke perfect english. The menu was not divided into antipasti, primi or secondi, but all dishes were put on one page. As an appetiser, everyone were served fresh warm foccacias, and they were sublime. Perhaps the best foccaccia I've ever tasted. As a main I ordered the beef tartar. Plain rustique presentation, and tasted excellent.
When we asked for the dessert chart, she just replied: "What do you want?". Obviously there's no need for a menu at a classic Trattoria, and I of course knew what I wanted. The Tiramisu was just perfect, absolute wonderful balance between the sweet and the liquor.
After spending three hours there, we almost didn't want to leave. If you're in Milan, you simply HAVE to go to Trattoria della Gloria.
