The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I found this to be a cozy, chill hostel that lets you socialize yet still sleep — its smaller size makes it easy to meet people in the many common spaces. There’s a swimming pool, outdoor shower, and a large deck/terrace with a BBQ and hammocks, plus an indoor lounge with a smart TV and tons of movies. They offer private rooms and dorms (maximum six beds per dorm) with comfy non‑bunk beds, everything is always kept super clean, and there are plenty of shared bathrooms so you rarely have to wait." - Matthew Kepnes

We loved our stay in Travellers Oasis! Upon arrival, the staff were super helpful, and even helped us to book a great barrier reef tour. They leant us towels to use on our excursions too. We stayed in a private room, and it was so quiet and comfortable to sleep in. The bathrooms are clean and the showers are lovely and hot. I even experienced using the outdoor shower, which was great. The location is brilliant as it takes about 20 minutes to walk to the restaurants and markets. It is just a great vibe here and would definitely recommend staying. Love the hammocks too!

We stayed at this welcoming hostel during our visit to Cairns. Everyone who works there was very friendly and helpful. Kathy's service with booking activities is fantastic. It's a wonderful oasis of tranquility where you have just the right amount of interaction with the other residents. We stayed in the deluxe room and therefore had breakfast every morning on our own balcony overlooking all sorts of tropical plants and trees. There are plenty of places to retreat to or enjoy a meal together. All the common areas were thoroughly cleaned daily. I would definitely stay here again if I ever travel to Cairns again!

A peaceful, tranquil and relaxing stay. Super clean, well equipped, spacious. Most importantly it was a calming place to stay. This hostel has an appropriate amount of beds per room so it’s not cramped! The layout is pleasant and inviting. I stayed for 4 nights and never once was it loud. I think a lot of the guests are longer stays but plenty of solo travellers came during my stay. Good location near cairns central which is very convenient.

Best hostel I’ve stayed in while travelling the east coast. Each block has a kitchen, chill space and bathrooms and they never get busy. The bathrooms were so nice - like a hotel bathroom. Beds were really comfy but the room was a bit hot, and that’s in winter. Defo wouldn’t hesitate to book again!

We booked a private room and we got the room right next to the street and the common area. Would not recommend. We had cigarette smoke wafting into our room during the night and buses and ambulances going in the night. Construction workers started on the extension they are doing just before 7:00am on Saturday Morning @ Add photos and videos

I don't even know where to begin. This isn't a backpackers' hostel as you might imagine — it's a truly special, unique, and atypical place. A place of dreams and wonders, a place of beauty. You come here and suddenly you want to stay forever instead of going out sightseeing 😄 The couple who owns the place is absolutely lovely. And everyone here is SO quiet and respectful — I heard nothing but silence and whispers, even at 9 pm, even at 9 am... In my room, there was a young guy, around 18, who told me he came here after six horrendous nights in another hostel that was only $5 cheaper per night — a place where he'd lived in constant, noisy hell. He was so moved to finally have a peaceful night’s sleep, in such an exceptional setting, that he was on the verge of tears. People, come here if you're traveling solo, as a couple, or as two friends looking for peace, quiet joy, beauty, happiness… and sleep! If you're a loud, rowdy group of party-goers with booze in hand — please, kindly stay somewhere else :'D

Stayed here for just the one night, wish we had come across it sooner! The hosts were absolutely lovely with a really warm welcoming! Kitchen was clean as were the bed rooms, didn’t get round to using the outdoor shower however heard good things! A very relaxed and calming hostel if you are looking for that sort of vibe. Extra points for a very cute doggo

One of our favourite hostels we have stayed in on our trip, and probably our favourite hostel in Australia. Super funky cool decoration, nice pool and communal areas, room was cute too. Gabriel was really welcoming and made sure we felt at home from the get go, showing us around the hostel and giving us Cairns travel tips. Mamacita the dog was gorgeous.

Yelp
A gem beside the Great Barrier Reef. I love the character of this place, the extremely friendly staff, and how willing they are to help book things in the surrounding area. It loses points on the facilities. The showers can have the handles pop off, air conditioning is a dollar an hour when needed, but towels are included. What makes up for it is unlimited Internet. No, it's not the fastest, but it gets the job done. I'd stay there again when diving the reef, especially with the location.

Yelp
During a month-long trip to Australia, my Brother and I stayed in three different Hostels. This was by-far our favorite. We still regularly talk about how much we enjoyed staying here. We stayed in a 3-bed room that was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom facilities were also clean and well maintained. One of our favorite things about this hostel were the abundance of tropical plants and relaxing areas to sit outside. This place truly is an "oasis". Everyone staying here was very friendly and the staff were also friendly and most helpful, especially when planning a day trip. We let the friendly staff take care of all our reservations and itineraries for snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and exploring the nearby tropical rainforests. They also provided us with free Wi-Fi daily in exchange for booking our reservations through them-a very nice perk! If I ever return to Cairns, Travelers Oasis would be my first choice for accommodations.

Yelp
By far my favorite hostel I've ever stayed in. The staff are amazing. They remembered my name from the time I checked in until the day I checked out. I did all my bookings through the front desk as they provided free transportation to the docs. BBQ on Monday nights is well worth the $12... you get all you can eat Kangaroo, Crocodile, and Emu... so good! I stayed in a 4 person room, very nice and spacious. They provided the linen, bath towel and beach towel. All rooms have a fan, it cost $1 for 3 hours of AC (defi recommend at night) Vending machine and snack machine on site, nice size pool, laundry facilities, game room area, outdoor seating, ample and very clean bathrooms and showers. 5 stars

Yelp
I would highly recommended anyone staying in Cairns to book into Travellers Oasis, this is one of the best hostels I've stayed in anywhere in the world. The staff are amazing, offering recommendations, suggestions and ideas for all the great things to do in the area. Linen, bedding and towels are all provided, as is free wifi and sunscreen. I would stay again without a doubt.

Yelp
I would happily return to Travellers Oasis! The front desk staff were amazing (thanks Mikey and Helen!) They spent a lot of time answering our questions and giving us recommendations on various tours. The hostel has a nice atmosphere - hammocks, floral designs, and a pool all contribute to it's tropical vibe. There are 2 equipped kitchens (that come with communal spices and free coffee & tea). The shared bathrooms and kitchens were maintained & clean. Additionally, there are extra little things that make the stay more comfortable in the affordable hostel - towels and linens are provided, plus you can pick-up an extra towel in the morning for trips that involve swimming. There's free wi-fi and sunscreen too. And free transport to the marina for reef tours in the morning and a shuttle between Tropic Days, their sister hostel, for its Monday night Aussie BBQ - which is also recommended! One draw back was that our 3-bed dorm room felt like it had been a double then an extra bed was crammed in. There was no place to hang wet clothes in the room, other than on a small bar over one of the beds. But I didn't come to a hostel in Cairns to spend time hanging out in the room. Over all Travellers Oasis was a great value and helped make my trip to Cairns more enjoyable.

Yelp
Awesome hostel in Cairns. I was new to traveling backpack style and unsure if I would be comfortable in a dorm. This hostel had options for single rooms which I reserved. The air conditioner was by coin only so the room got hot, and their were birds or bats outside that scream like a woman being murdered so I didn't get much sleep. It was my first night in Cairns before a live aboard diving excursion to the Great Barrier Reef so it was good for one night. I was so excited and nervous so that didn't help me sleep either. The grounds are nice with a pool, hammocks, and common area. They do bbqs on certain days and it seems like a really great place to meet fellow world travelers. If I could do it again, I would stay again but give the dorms a try and meet more fun people! Oh, definitely book this place WAY in advance... it's popular.

Yelp
Best place to stay if you're visiting Cairns. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They're available to offer you suggestions on things to do and places to eat. They also have a good relationship with a sister hostel down the road, which they often collaborate with on events (such as cook outs). This place fosters a very communal and friendly vibe. We met a few friends that we still keep in contact with today! The rooms are clean and cozy enough for short term stays. If you want to lock away your valuables, you can trust the front desk to lock them up for you. The office is only opened during the day and there's always someone there. At night, both the front gate and office are locked. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this to anyone!

Yelp
Possibly my favorite hostel to date. The place is exceptionally clean, the staff unbelievably helpful and friendly (although you may be able to get a cheaper rate if you book on your own). They planned out my three days here (I didn't book anything ahead of time). Location is good enough given the accommodations. Also has free Wi-Fi

Yelp
Would be a shame if i ignore writing a review for this amazing place i stayed in for a memorable trip i made for a lifetime. I found this place through tripadvisor and feel good for making the right choice to stay here when i was in Cairns. Super friendly staff and a well stocked kitchen(i mean pots and pans) and a swimming pool are its highlights. They definitely set a bar for me in terms of hostels. You guys definitely need a pat on the back guys! I met some really interesting travellers here. Walking distance to the Ocean and economical transportation to the airport just makes this even better.

Yelp
A nice cozy hostel and walking distance to the main drag. Facilities were clean, staff was very nice and helpful, and the were different room options available. A very nice pool hang out area as well.

Yelp
I worked for accommodation at this gem for a couple weeks while backpacking in Australia. I liked that Travellers is close enough to the Cairns Esplanade that you can easily enjoy the city and all of the fun things to do there, while also quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the typical backpacker scene in the city. With two kitchens, a TV/living room, free wifi, pool, and outdoor patio, the hostel offers a lot. Having spent a few weeks working there, I can attest to the cleanliness of the rooms and shared spaces. Everything is kept clean, tidy, and fresh.

Yelp
Great place to stay. The staff is friendly, location is great, and it is quiet at night. The shopping mall is right across the street and the lagoon is a short walk. The bars and bottle shop are a short walk too. Some other hostels are too big and noisy at night. Travelers oasis is wonderful for going out for fun but being able to come back and get some rest. Met many wonderful new friends here too.
