The 7 Best Hostels in Australia (Updated 2025)

"I found this to be a cozy, chill hostel that lets you socialize yet still sleep — its smaller size makes it easy to meet people in the many common spaces. There’s a swimming pool, outdoor shower, and a large deck/terrace with a BBQ and hammocks, plus an indoor lounge with a smart TV and tons of movies. They offer private rooms and dorms (maximum six beds per dorm) with comfy non‑bunk beds, everything is always kept super clean, and there are plenty of shared bathrooms so you rarely have to wait." - Matthew Kepnes

Charming hostel, very well kept. Rooms are comfortable, the hostel is tastefully decorated. Life at the hostel revolves around the pool and outdoor eating areas. All buildings, 3 kitchens, and outdoor showers surround those convivial areas. The atmosphere is chill and it’s easy to connect with other guests. It’s quiet and approx. 15 min walk to the esplanade, and 100 meters from cairns central mall and train/bus station.Management and staff are very helpful. I definitely recommend staying there.

We had a couple of amazing stays at Travellers Oasis whilst we were in Cairns. Everything about our stay was perfect!! We had the standard double room which offered plenty of space, a safe, a full under-counter size fridge and a very comfy and clean bed. It has an amazing location of being central but very quiet in the evenings and all the guests really respected the noise curfew which made every night a delight. The shared bathrooms and kitchens were spotless every single day/time we used them which is a testament to the hard work of the team and the community feel from all the other guests to keep everything clean and tidy. We were very kindly lent extra towels for a diving trip and free luggage storage as we were returning there after a couple of days and given so many good recommendations for things to do both in Cairns, the Daintree and in the Tablelands. 10/10

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ An absolute gem in Cairns! Travellers Oasis truly lives up to its name. Kathy and Gabriel are absolutely fantastic hosts who made us feel welcome from the very first moment. Their hospitality is outstanding and genuinely caring. Kathy went above and beyond by organizing amazing trips for us, which made our stay even more special and completely stress-free. The accommodation itself is incredibly clean – spotless in every corner – and perfectly equipped with everything you could possibly need. One of the biggest highlights is how peaceful and quiet it is. After busy days exploring Cairns and the surrounding nature, it was the perfect place to relax and unwind although there is a mall very close to the hostel. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay and would absolutely return. Highly recommended. Thank you for everything 🙏❤️ Jan and Nathalie

My favourite hostel ever. Friendly staff (that helped us check in even outside of office hours!), really responsive on email - they’ll contact you before you arrive to confirm check in details which is so helpful. The pool is lovely and the entire complex is decorated so nicely, a really quirky welcoming vibe. Other facilities like laundry great. We had a private room with shared bathroom. Loved it so much, we even had a balcony looking out onto the street where we could eat breakfast etc. The bathrooms are great nice and modern, there are also outdoor showers - though didn’t get the chance to use them, I’ve heard good things. Kitchen really well equipped with everything you could need. The location was perfect for us too, really close to greyhound bus stop, further away from noisy areas of the city, but still easily walkable anywhere you need. I have nothing bad to say about this place, it was wonderful. Would recommend and love to return.

Google
Highly recommend this place. Quiet place to rest. Very chill music in the pool area. Very clean rooms and bathrooms. Its 20 min walk from the wharf for the reef and island trips. I really liked the natural shower close to the pool. Definitely is a great place for low budget accommodation.

A charming and magical place! Everything is exactly as described, good service, generous and available even outside office hours, quick response to any question before booking and while staying there. I booked a single room and it is exactly what a person needs. Although the bathroom and toilet were shared, there was never a problem of waiting, everything was clean, sometimes it felt like it was only at my disposal. Several kitchens in the hostel area, many utensils and even basic necessities such as spices and oil for preparing food. There are very convenient laundry services , several machines and a large hanging space as well as dryers that are enough for everyone. There is a small and charming pool to relax in after a busy day. Absolutely a small, beautiful and charming oasis - I couldn't stop taking pictures, I loved the design so much, you can feel that everything was made and decorated with love. I highly recommend it and I will definitely go back there. Another important detail is that the place is close to the central station,a train station and a large shopping mall, but that doesn't mean it is noisy there, not at all. Very close to the center, but not in the heart of things, for me this was the advantage, because there was no noise from the city center.

Google
One of my favourite hostels that i’ve ever stayed in. The private room has beds that are incredibly comfortable and the entire place feels like a home away from home. I’ve never seen a hostel where you can cook your own food in a kitchen. The pool area and the hammocks are a nice touch on top of all this. Highly recommend!

Google
Really lovely hostel with lots of charm and personality. Loved the chill out spaces and found it very clean and quiet. Easy walking distance to CBD. Bed was comfortable and out of hours check in and check out was straightforward. It would've been nice to be able to prop the window open at night as I prefer to sleep with fan only rather than using aircon, but overall this is one of the nicest hostels I've stayed at.

Yelp
A gem beside the Great Barrier Reef. I love the character of this place, the extremely friendly staff, and how willing they are to help book things in the surrounding area. It loses points on the facilities. The showers can have the handles pop off, air conditioning is a dollar an hour when needed, but towels are included. What makes up for it is unlimited Internet. No, it's not the fastest, but it gets the job done. I'd stay there again when diving the reef, especially with the location.

Yelp
During a month-long trip to Australia, my Brother and I stayed in three different Hostels. This was by-far our favorite. We still regularly talk about how much we enjoyed staying here. We stayed in a 3-bed room that was clean and very comfortable. The bathroom facilities were also clean and well maintained. One of our favorite things about this hostel were the abundance of tropical plants and relaxing areas to sit outside. This place truly is an "oasis". Everyone staying here was very friendly and the staff were also friendly and most helpful, especially when planning a day trip. We let the friendly staff take care of all our reservations and itineraries for snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef and exploring the nearby tropical rainforests. They also provided us with free Wi-Fi daily in exchange for booking our reservations through them-a very nice perk! If I ever return to Cairns, Travelers Oasis would be my first choice for accommodations.

Yelp
By far my favorite hostel I've ever stayed in. The staff are amazing. They remembered my name from the time I checked in until the day I checked out. I did all my bookings through the front desk as they provided free transportation to the docs. BBQ on Monday nights is well worth the $12... you get all you can eat Kangaroo, Crocodile, and Emu... so good! I stayed in a 4 person room, very nice and spacious. They provided the linen, bath towel and beach towel. All rooms have a fan, it cost $1 for 3 hours of AC (defi recommend at night) Vending machine and snack machine on site, nice size pool, laundry facilities, game room area, outdoor seating, ample and very clean bathrooms and showers. 5 stars

Yelp
I would highly recommended anyone staying in Cairns to book into Travellers Oasis, this is one of the best hostels I've stayed in anywhere in the world. The staff are amazing, offering recommendations, suggestions and ideas for all the great things to do in the area. Linen, bedding and towels are all provided, as is free wifi and sunscreen. I would stay again without a doubt.

Yelp
I would happily return to Travellers Oasis! The front desk staff were amazing (thanks Mikey and Helen!) They spent a lot of time answering our questions and giving us recommendations on various tours. The hostel has a nice atmosphere - hammocks, floral designs, and a pool all contribute to it's tropical vibe. There are 2 equipped kitchens (that come with communal spices and free coffee & tea). The shared bathrooms and kitchens were maintained & clean. Additionally, there are extra little things that make the stay more comfortable in the affordable hostel - towels and linens are provided, plus you can pick-up an extra towel in the morning for trips that involve swimming. There's free wi-fi and sunscreen too. And free transport to the marina for reef tours in the morning and a shuttle between Tropic Days, their sister hostel, for its Monday night Aussie BBQ - which is also recommended! One draw back was that our 3-bed dorm room felt like it had been a double then an extra bed was crammed in. There was no place to hang wet clothes in the room, other than on a small bar over one of the beds. But I didn't come to a hostel in Cairns to spend time hanging out in the room. Over all Travellers Oasis was a great value and helped make my trip to Cairns more enjoyable.

Yelp
Awesome hostel in Cairns. I was new to traveling backpack style and unsure if I would be comfortable in a dorm. This hostel had options for single rooms which I reserved. The air conditioner was by coin only so the room got hot, and their were birds or bats outside that scream like a woman being murdered so I didn't get much sleep. It was my first night in Cairns before a live aboard diving excursion to the Great Barrier Reef so it was good for one night. I was so excited and nervous so that didn't help me sleep either. The grounds are nice with a pool, hammocks, and common area. They do bbqs on certain days and it seems like a really great place to meet fellow world travelers. If I could do it again, I would stay again but give the dorms a try and meet more fun people! Oh, definitely book this place WAY in advance... it's popular.

Yelp
Best place to stay if you're visiting Cairns. The staff is super friendly and helpful. They're available to offer you suggestions on things to do and places to eat. They also have a good relationship with a sister hostel down the road, which they often collaborate with on events (such as cook outs). This place fosters a very communal and friendly vibe. We met a few friends that we still keep in contact with today! The rooms are clean and cozy enough for short term stays. If you want to lock away your valuables, you can trust the front desk to lock them up for you. The office is only opened during the day and there's always someone there. At night, both the front gate and office are locked. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend this to anyone!

Yelp
Possibly my favorite hostel to date. The place is exceptionally clean, the staff unbelievably helpful and friendly (although you may be able to get a cheaper rate if you book on your own). They planned out my three days here (I didn't book anything ahead of time). Location is good enough given the accommodations. Also has free Wi-Fi

Yelp
Would be a shame if i ignore writing a review for this amazing place i stayed in for a memorable trip i made for a lifetime. I found this place through tripadvisor and feel good for making the right choice to stay here when i was in Cairns. Super friendly staff and a well stocked kitchen(i mean pots and pans) and a swimming pool are its highlights. They definitely set a bar for me in terms of hostels. You guys definitely need a pat on the back guys! I met some really interesting travellers here. Walking distance to the Ocean and economical transportation to the airport just makes this even better.

Yelp
A nice cozy hostel and walking distance to the main drag. Facilities were clean, staff was very nice and helpful, and the were different room options available. A very nice pool hang out area as well.

Yelp
I worked for accommodation at this gem for a couple weeks while backpacking in Australia. I liked that Travellers is close enough to the Cairns Esplanade that you can easily enjoy the city and all of the fun things to do there, while also quietly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the typical backpacker scene in the city. With two kitchens, a TV/living room, free wifi, pool, and outdoor patio, the hostel offers a lot. Having spent a few weeks working there, I can attest to the cleanliness of the rooms and shared spaces. Everything is kept clean, tidy, and fresh.

Yelp
Great place to stay. The staff is friendly, location is great, and it is quiet at night. The shopping mall is right across the street and the lagoon is a short walk. The bars and bottle shop are a short walk too. Some other hostels are too big and noisy at night. Travelers oasis is wonderful for going out for fun but being able to come back and get some rest. Met many wonderful new friends here too.
