Where to Stay in Melbourne During Your Visit (Updated 2025)

"If you want to feel like you're temporarily living in Melbourne, I recommend the heritage-listed Treasury on Collins for a luxury stay; its elegant, apartment-style rooms are large and multiroom with kitchens, sofas, desks, king-sized beds, and washing machines." - Matthew Kepnes

The 6 Best Hotels in Melbourne

"This four-star aparthotel in the city’s CBD feels like a 19th-century landmark that’s been thoughtfully updated: I like the high ceilings and gilded crown molding in the public spaces and the way the hotel balances historic character with modern comforts. Amenities include a fitness center, a complimentary evening happy hour, and a daily complimentary breakfast buffet with hot dishes, pastries, cereals, and fresh fruit. Rooms are spacious with large windows, neutral, sophisticated design, and quality furnishings; suites have a kitchenette with mini-fridge, microwave, and Nespresso, while full apartments add a cooktop and dishwasher. All rooms include a washer/dryer, a large TV with Netflix, a good work desk, and modern bathrooms with walk-in showers, premium toiletries, and soft towels—overall a great choice for travelers who want a centrally located upscale hotel with kitchen facilities." - Matthew Kepnes

Google
Service is great, breakfast is superb, and the suite is so clean, cozy and comfy. Above all it's a bank building, carefully conserved, pretty remarkable. I chose this place over other 5 star places for its spacious apartment styled room. The bathroom could do with some glam, sink dresser could more spacious, but alls good. Location is central, can walk to all places or hop on the free CBD tram 35. No view from the room though.

Large apartment style rooms are perfect for self caterers and families. Equipped with microwave, small fridge (no mini bar), crockery, Nespresso machine, washing machine, large flat screen TV, sitting area and comfy bed etc. ||Check in is at one desk on the mezzanine level, a lift is accessed from the discreet Queen Street entrance. ||Breakfast is a buffet in the lovely mezzanine of what is called, The Lounge. |(Not to be confused with main stream hotels Executive lounges.). Cereals, hot food, toast, coffee machines, fruit etc are of good quality. ||Small snacks of chips, mini packs of Haribos, skittles, apples, soft drinks etc are marketed as, ‘Complimentary mini bar inclusions’ which can confuse mini bar expectation’s. ||The calming mezzanine level is also where your one complimentary glass of wine per person, per day is provided. ||A separately operated restaurant / bar on the ground floor makes up for lack of room service and restaurants within the hotel itself. ||The staff go out of their way to be accommodating, special mention of Amanda, Front of House manager.||The hotel is surrounded by other buildings so not all rooms have panoramic outlooks. Room 404 is huge with plenty of natural light despite an office block being in close proximity. Sheer curtains soften the outlook. ||All in all, this apartment style hotel is immaculately clean with nice decor, friendly staff snd a convenient location for sight seeing, shopping snd business.

This was probably the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The room was so spacious, had great amenities, the breakfast was nice, and the complimentary snacks saved us many times from being hangry after long days of sightseeing. I really appreciated the in-unit laundry and the jacuzzi tub. The bed was very comfortable too. All of the staff were outstanding and super helpful when I needed assistance. I would recommend this hotel to everyone and will definitely stay here again if we return to Melbourne.

Excellent service, great central location and great rooms! My mum and I recently stayed for an impromptu girls weekend away and have nothing but good things to say about our stay. The room had everything we needed - comfy beds, mini lounge room and kitchenette. Buffet breakfast daily plus tea/coffee making facilities on the mezzanine floor was delightful. They also had complimentary wine and bubbles from 4-6pm each day. We’ll be back and have already recommended to several people!

What a stunning hotel in the heart of the city! Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and residents are quite clearly at the centre of everything. Love the idea of wine down - a glass of wine for residents is so thoughtful and makes you feel special. Little touches are so important and make you want to return. Great breakfast too! "

Google
Treasury provides for a very convenient stay. Location is wonderful - 10 -15 min walk / tram ride to most of the sites. Our room was a suite with plenty of space and amenities. It could use a little updating, and more shower pressure, but these are minor nitpicks Included breakfast is adequate and you can gorge on the non-perishables till 10pm. Room cleaning and front desk were extremely helpful. |Parking garage is conveniently around the corner, and is best for smaller vehicles.

Very luxurious! I like their luxurious furniture. This hotel is a perfect blend of historic grandeur and modern apartment luxury in the CBD. The exceptional staff and complimentary Wine Down made our stay truly unforgettable.

Quite an oasis in the centre of the CBD of a big city. Everything is right up there, price, location, service and accomodation quality. Breafast is very nice - the fried eggs and particularly the apricot yoyurt are lovely. Staff are kind and attentive. My stay of a week went by fast.

Yelp
Me as a Traveler: Single, well travelled, stay at least 2 hotels a month on average, well paid employee, must stay at a high rated Expedia hotel as they are valid reviews (TripAdvisor I think is filled with inflated reviews & of course this hotel is ranked "#1" for Melbourne on that sham site), must stay at a highly recommended, centrally located, 4 star hotel and up that isn't going to break the bank but will also pay more if its good bang for buck. Hotel: stairs to the main entrance (terrible if you have bags... NO bellhop or hotel staff to greet you when you walk in). Must walk thru a restaurant with your bags unless you are smart enough to guess there is a side entrance where your taxi can drop you off and even then (no bellhop or trolly) if you are traveling with family or with more than one luggage this is super tiresome...this hotel is centrally located, but there are many others that are also centrally located that are just as good as this one (I moved to a different hotel after one night at this one). Very outdated rooms in a very old building. Hotel rooms have no views (my room faced another building's wall). I booked directly with the hotel to get the "happy hour" perk but I don't think it's worth it if the trade off is staying at this hotel. My room: queens suite... the picture of the room exploited on the site and other sites are deceiving, they make it look like the living room and kitchenette is divided by a wall. Not true. In fact it's divided by a Big TV on an early 90s tv stand (ikea has better furniture than this place) and on the photos the bathroom is focused on the shower bc they don't want to show you that there's a big washer machine below the sink and your bathroom is pretty much a laundry room. The size of room is like a small cabin on a cruise ship and it's def decorated like an early 90s cruise ship cabin. Have you ever stayed at a travelodge where they put the "this seat has been sanitized" paper around the toilet lid? Well, this one def came with that. Only perk is: Molton brown products. Other perk: the service and staff was good Major con: Feng Shui super off, didn't know what kind of hotel this was (family, couple?) just didn't fit any brand... Also... is this place haunted? I swear as I was coming Down the elevator I heard a woman's scream but it sounded more paranormal. Maybe the place is super freaky and the hallways have The Shining feel that it just got to my head? Anyway glad I got the hell out of there. Real Pictures of the place attached.

Yelp
I think it would be worthwhile noting that this hotel really is supposed to be like an apartment experience living in Melbourne than a luxury boutique that you thought you were getting when you originally booked the room. If you check in after midnight you have to check yourself in and the instructions are okay at best because the hotel navigation itself is confusing (maybe no fault of the staff). You face out into an alley way or the next business building with lights in the hallways that directly go into your window and its too late to ask for a different room because its past midnight. These are things you'd never get at a hotel or even a real boutique hotel, so sort of a negative experience on that. On top of that, the rooms were very poorly setup, strangely oriented, and the bed was so soft I had a backache because there was no support whatsoever. There was insufficient lighting at night in the room, and the bathroom definitely needed some upgrades. there were leftover (I won't say where) hairs on the counter and floors. The shower was okay, but it feels like no one actually lived in these apartments before they decided this was the design they picked, because water easily gets everywhere, and things are in awkward places for anyone over 5'4" (I imagine, I'm a bit taller than that, but honestly just very cramped). The only thing that was good about this place was location. There was no real lobby, no real place you can hang out, I think there's some kind of half weird second floor thing and if you book this hotel on any other site but their own, you don't get breakfast and a host of features you didn't even know about that they try to upsell you to after. Basically the only thing that was nice was we asked for an umbrella, and we got one, and it was some what broken actually but it sufficed us for the duration of the trip. I think if you're looking for a luxury experience you're better off at a hotel, as the Hyatt and several other places nearby are just as well located if not better, and definitely open 24/7 instead of having 'after hours' codes and check ins. They weren't priced much more or less than Treasury on Collins so save yourself the hassle!

Yelp
Wonderful staff, apartments are comfortable and exceptionally clean. We stayed here for 5 nights in August 2022, Also have stayed here pre-Covid. My minor complaint is that the breakfast on the mezzanine has limited variety, more fresh fruit would be nice.

Yelp
Great location! Very central and close to everything. Walking distance to Yarra river. Inside the free CBD tram! Huge rooms. Spacious. Comfortable beds. Great breakfast that's included in your stay. Lots of options and has snacks later in the day. We would stay here again and liked it over our other hotel.

Yelp
Outstanding! Book direct from hotel's website. Highly recommended especially in terms of cleanliness, service at front desk, location, and breakfast buffet. Gorgeous rooms, large and comfortable. Beautiful cotton linens. First trip to Melbourne and we are so happy we stayed with this accommodation.

Yelp
We had a wonderful stay here. The rooms were clean, very spacious and well appointed. The in-room washing machine came in very handy mid-trip. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast buffet, delicious and very reasonably priced. I'll definitely stay here again.

Yelp
The Treasury on Collins was a lucky find! We stayed here for 5 nights on our month-long trip to Australia. These are serviced apartments with maid service every three days. We had a spacious queen suite with a comfy bed, kitchenette, sitting area and best of all, a washer/dryer. The hotel is conveniently located in the CBD within walking distance of good cafes, major attractions and the tram (free within the CBD). If you book directly there a free nightly wine tasting.
