Tree City Coffee & Pastry

I drove 2 hours for this and wanted it to be amazing.. The atmosphere and service were incredible.. I could hang out here forever.. the coffee was on par.. not incredible.. the pastries.. not good.. like had to force myself to finish the cinnamon roll and muffin

What happened to this place?? It's been years since I visited but I remember it having delicious coffee so I took my mum in last weekend. The coffee was disgusting. It tasted like dirty water. She had an Americano, black, and I had a gingerbread latte. Both were awful. We threw them away. Hoping this is just a blip but will not be back. Service was friendly and polite, and the inside is cheerful if a bit dirty (tables needed wiping, floor was grimy). Also, you have to ask for sugar; they don't keep anything out. They have gluten free options, which is part of why we went. Muffins are made by a small baker, and GF toast was mentioned on the menu. I hate leaving a bad review but want to save people the trouble (and money).

I love all of their unique coffee and drink combinations! Huge space to hang out or study as well. They have some vegan food options, but I wish they expanded their vegan bakery goods. I got a cappuccino with violet syrup- heavenly. Exactly what I wanted. I also got their vegan breakfast sandwich on the sun dried tomato bagel. The cheese could have been melted better, but that’s always tough with vegan options.

This place could use a good cleaning. The bathrooms were disgusting. The coffee, matcha and avocado toast saved the review.

Stopped at this lovely, quaint, and festive coffee shop for a morning coffee. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was wonderful with all the holiday decorations and fun flavors to match. I enjoyed my coffee in the cafe.

Tree City is a super cute place for breakfast and coffee! We tried their lemon scone and coffee cake, and they were admittedly just okay. The scone was a little dry and the lemon flavor was a lot subtler than I expected. BUT their toasted bagels and the bagel sandwiches are excellent! I got their Jalapeno Popper Bagel sandwich, which was their jalapeno cheddar bagel with cream cheese (instead of American), bacon, and eggs. They originally made it with the American cheese instead of cream cheese, but kindly remade it when I asked.

Coffee was really good, food was pretty good, our table was a little dirty and the chairs were sparse. A little pricey for a college student no doubt. All in all, neat little joint. I love downtown Kent.

After today, I don’t think I will be going back to tree city. On multiple occasions, the staff was never on the same page about the menu. I was up charged for something I added to my drink and then was told after ordering and paying that they didn’t have that item. Was the upcharge small? Sure, but the ALL the staff should be aware of changes. Also don’t have things on your menu if you don’t have them. It makes the customer feel stupid because no one on staff told them. Also if you are gonna tell me I can’t have the thing I order give me a better reason than “we don’t use them in drink”

Someone, can't make any assumptions on who... ‍ got my review hidden on google, so I'll leave my review here where it CANT get removed. One of the worst business owners I have ever encountered in my life. The reviews about the owner yelling at employees or being rude to them behind the bar are very true and it's even worse behind the scenes. I could go on for hours but I'll name just a few major things. Don't go here unless you want to support a business owner who calls every single one of her employees lazy because of one training inconsistency. Training is her job as the owner of a small business but she deflects her incompetence on her employees. This happened on multiple occasions. Cutting hours to "save" on labor, leading to short staffing if there's any sort of rush (aka more $$$ in the owners pocket), lack of transparency about how tips are split (talks in circles until you're tired of listening to her), pays less than minimum wage and expects maximum effort, yet somehow doesn't recognize her employees for their efforts, etc etc etc-- it's sad. She uses the cheapest possible avenue for her offerings. Costco pastries (not the majority, but some things that could easily be sourced by the other businesses she buys from), Costco milks (not even the barista blend that's standard almost everywhere else), the cheapest matcha, 2% milk being the standard for lattes instead of whole... the cheapest everything. She doesn't care about the quality of product she's pushing out, which is extremely obvious when you realize 90% of her staff doesn't know how to dial in the espresso machine, let alone how that reflects in the shots. If you've ever encountered an employee here who seems confused about the menu, training inconsistencies, or price inconsistencies-- just know it started at the top. Trying to get a straightforward, consistent answer out of her, about her own policies and procedures that she created, is like pulling teeth. This is just one person revealing the realities of everyone who's worked here since the new owner took over. People deserve to know what kind of business owner they're supporting.

I'm consistently disappointed in this place! Many of the reviews on here are from when Tree City had previous management and was run exceptionally well. Now it seems that everything has gone downhill. The cafe atmosphere itself does not have any cohesiveness and is not someplace that feels warm and cozy, especially in the second half of the building. There is no cohesiveness in the interior and you get a sense that they just don't have the money to do things the right way. You can see this from hand written signs on printer paper to mismatched furniture. Additionally the ingredients have all been substituted for more economical low quality products and it is evident in their offerings. Their pastries are nothing noteworthy and could be simply resold pastries from the grocery store. I get a sense that the employees are trying their best but management clearly has no idea how to run a business and is absent. The best thing that they could do is sell the business to someone with the skills and funds to do things the right way.

Waited 20 minutes at the window for my order after they told me they were out of overnight oats again (I came here last week and same story). It took 10 minutes for me to be spoken to at the window. Love running late for work because they only staff one person. I ordered a coffee and toast :( wish they were better organized. But I'm disappointed a lot when I come here. Had to come back to update this because went to eat my toast and it was in toasted bread so that's awesome

The place was quite busy when I walked in. There was a bit of a wait to order. They have a lot of pastry options. I saw they had a vegan bagel sandwich so was intrigued by it. They refused to use my reusable cup for the coffee which I get because of how busy they were. But the cost of a small iced latte with no added syrups and a vegan sandwich was $12! All that was in the vegan sandwich was cheese and a sausage patty. These costs are kinda ridiculous. But the place was nice and bussin.

Stopped in around 12:30pm with my pops for a bite and coffee. Ordered a couple bagel and egg sandwiches and drip coffee and an Americano. What went right: the Americano. What went wrong: everything else. The most disappointing thing about today's visit was the absolute disdain and annoyance I felt from the worker who took our order. No smile, abrasive tone, defensive. Acted annoyed that she had to list the bagels they had. I asked what came on the sandwiches and literal deadpan face she just says "nothing. we microwave the egg and cheese and just put it on the bread". Cool cool cool... I order anyhow despite my doubt and bc I was hungry. After taking a first sip of the drip coffee, I asked if it would be possible if I could just get an Americano like my dad bc it was apparent it had not been made recently and was quite bitter. (I know this bc it was not very hot and another employee took the canisters back bc they were empty shortly after pouring my drink.) The employee I asked to change my drink was defensive and said it had been made very recently (wrong) and that maybe I just don't like their coffee and it wasn't for me...such a strange interaction and so unnecessary. She did make me a nice Americano, though, so thanks...? Sandwiches were exactly what I thought they'd be. Dry. No flavor. Microwaved. lol Dad also got a cannoli. It was fine. Moral of the story: I can overlook a lot if service is great...even average! But today missed the mark. Still tipped 20% though bc I'm not a monster. K byeeee I won't be back.

Amazing Service!!! First time ever in this shop: They were short staff this mor and was training a new employee... but still took the time to open up and grab me a White Mocha and a Cinnamon Roll. It's the little things in life that make a difference; and these guys under that. Thank You! - I will be back!

The place was promising, location is great, the building is nice.....then we walked in. Walking in, you can tell the lack of details, from the confusing menu boards to the empty shelves. We've never been here, I can see the place it's trying to be or what it once was, but it isn't anymore or never was. The bathroom was dusty....seems like the place can use a little de-cluttering. Maybe as an employee, walk in the customer shoes. Everything you allow your customers to see is your brand-standard. The drinks weren't horrible but they weren't great either. As I look back now, I believe we ordered a caramel macchiato but got a salty Caramel instead. Not sure anymore as we ended up not finishing the drink. The staff was friendly tho, Alexis and the guy that took our order. With all the other coffee options around Kent, this place would need to step up.

Stopped in this morning for the first time ever. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese bagel on an Asiago cheese bagel. The service was good. Atmosphere is average. The sandwich was really disappointing. The bagel was tasty, but the amount of egg threw off the entire balance of the sandwich, as all I could taste was the egg way out front, followed by the bagel, and some salty crunch bacon. I have no idea what type of cheese it was -- it tasted like it wasn't there. Overall, a very average breakfast sandwich. Given the competition in the area, I won't be back. I wish I would have gotten a bagel sandwich from McDonald's instead.

Our visit purchases consisted of a drip coffee and latte. Both items were good, solid drinks. Service was also good even though they were quite busy. Food items looked wonderful (we didn't purchase any). Lots of seating inside and out. Christmas decorations were great. We will definitely go back. Like to visit during warmer weather and enjoy street side ambiance of downtown Kent.

I stumbled upon Tree City years ago when they first opened and it's a hidden gem! The great atmosphere makes this coffee shop the perfect study or work spot. Visit this spot and you'll see why it's called Tree City! I have to say I'm picky about my coffee and ESPECIALLY my oat milk. Tree City has the most consistently good iced oat milk latte that I've tried from the coffee shops in Kent. Now, let's talk treats. Their unique cheesecake options are a must-try if you have a sweet tooth like me. As pictured, they also have other options to satisfy that craving! The staff has always been a friendly bunch and accommodated any of my questions or requests. I can't for the next time I visit home and can try more of their quirky, seasonal options!

The lady there was nice and helpful alon with the other employees, the food looks very delicious and it smells wonderful. A tad bit loud but fine.

Easy parking, Large space, delicious food, tasty coffee (but order it extra hot as it comes out tepid), dog friendly. The young man that was serving us at the cashier may have been having a bad day, but he could've been a little more friendly.

If ur looking for great coffee and a small snack to munch on this is the place! Decent prices and delicious treats. This place use to offer military discount but sadly they stopped offering it.

I normally love this place but either the egg portion shrunk or the bagel grew. I was able to have plain bagel leftovers

Directions could be better followed. Rude employees and the customer service is lacking which makes us not want to return. Nicer ambience and quality of coffee at other cafe's in the area. Try other coffee shops for a better experience before coming to this one.

There hours are never consistent it feels like, I went today at 3:10 and they were closed. They Usually close at five and that's what there hours say. I don't have this problem with Bent Tree or Scribbles.

Is the style modern, uncomfortable, and harsh lighting? NO! That's what adds to the charm of this place. I love it, feels like home because of how cozy and "not-perfect" it is. I get cold brew with almond milk, pretty good. I've come every morning before I went to work this week. (Here for the week only for work).

me and my friends came here for a coffee date, coffee was great and food too but my friend accidentally spilled her coffee and one of the workers that was working the drive thru (skinny, high pony tails brown hair) was being really rude to us and we asked her for a mop and said sorry and she continues to say "as long as u clean it up i don't care". she was being so rude about it to us and it was just a bad experience.

Ok. Microwaved eggs. Espresso with no crema. But the third visit getting a red eye with a cup full of grounds made me write this.

The coffee was great, the customer service was meh..I prefer a smaller friendlier atmosphere but if you like to have a lot of space and no interaction with staff you'll like this place.

Drinks were fine. Service: yikes. They seemed super annoyed to have a customer. Their specialty drink menu is a cute idea, but had better things to do than describe what's in them.

THIS PLACE HAS CHARACTER!!! Shawty and I went at 10:30 on a Saturday morning; and it was very busy. We waited quite some time for our coffee; but I understand. It was slightly above average coffee with creative names and flavors. Overall, fun experience to take ya boo out for.

Oh have the mighty have fallen. A once beloved coffee shop by my roommate and I, now is an over priced gamble. Will you get a coffee flavored milk or a chai flavored milk, either way you are over paying for a glass of milk. Over the past 3 years we just continue to get more and more disappointed. Its almost as if the quality of their cups have gone down, so has their quality of foods and coffee. Ambiance and service is still nice but unless you want overcooked and overpriced anything its not worth your time or money.

VERY FUNKY. Great Saturday morning coffee. Greeted by very productive environment and all over good vibes. They are creative with names, flavors, and even the decorations. The girl at the front asked me how my day was and I was sold. Overall, great little date spot for you and your boo.

The best part of Tree City are the bagel breakfast sandwiches--so good! The coffee is fine, and they do offer a lot of variety but it is nothing spectacular and there are better coffee options in the town if you are just looking for coffee. There is a great amount of seating inside, and it offers a great work environment if you are someone who doesn't mind noise and a bit of bustle. If you get distracted easily or noise bothers you, not the homework place for you! Also, most of the seating is tables and chairs, not a lot of comfy or lounge type seating for hangouts. Although this is a bit of a downtown Kent staple due to location and hype, in person it leaves more to be desired.

I go here about twice a year since moving to Kent and I let myself forget why I'm not a huge fan, and quickly get reminded. The lattes just don't taste like good espresso, they taste like Circle K quick coffee. And this is after I ask for half sweet, knowing I want the coffee flavor, and still not getting it. Also I asked the girl at the register for half sweet and she asked me what I meant, and after explaining that I wanted the sweetness not to be as sweet, I was told that wasn't happening for my first drink choice. The only thing that I enjoy about tree city is their bagel sandwiches.

Dried out, lackluster pastries. Good coffee. Pathetically bad customer service. If they install a self-service/self-checkout for coffee, check it out.

Had the vanilla latte with almond milk. Enjoyable afternoon drink. Weather is moving me to ice coffee soon. They had a grand selection of pastries but I just had the latte. Although they did look good.

A little more pricey but they are my favorite coffee place around. They have great food options and everyone is super friendly. The set up is a perfect place to get some school work done or visit with friends.

I visited this business a while back and was very disappointed with the sanitation practices of the staff that I observed but I thought I would give it another try today. I stopped in to get a hot refreshing beverage and a pastry but turned around and walked out when I saw the pastry case full of little black flies buzzing all around the pastries. It really was gross to think about these flies buzzing around garbage cans floor drains and toilets and then inhabiting the pastry case. Two chances and I'm now done with this business.

This place is the best! Saw a Tik tok and happened to be in the area. Stopped by and the owner is very friendly and so kind. The coffee is great! The store is cozy and I would come back to Ohio just for this coffee shop( I'm from California) Please if you're in the area stop by ! You won't regret it !

This was a great coffee stop before dinner with some friends. The store itself is very nice and rustic feeling. Wide selection of coffee, tea, speciality drinks, desserts, and even wine! I got a black cold brew and absolutely loved it. Very bold and refreshing and had a great taste! Also super cool that they don't use plastic straws!

This place has gone down hill. Used to be a regular here and hadn't been in a while. Ordered 4 coffees with cream and was handed 4 creamers. Asked for more and was only given 4 more. When asked if they have a container of half and half to add, they told us that it was stolen by homeless people. I am confused why they have not replaced it. The old decorations and atmosphere are all gone and replaced with a mix of random decorations. The bathrooms are also in desperate need of a deep cleaning.

First time here. Met up with my mom here as a halfway point between Warren and Akron. Cute shop with a nice open ambiance. I ordered a plain bagel with spinach, egg and feta, and Mom got a raspberry chocolate scone. Everything was served in/on paper, which, for an eat-in order, should've been served in/on regular dishes. I ordered a cafe au lait, which I thought would be served in a large mug, but it was a paper cup. I'd come back again.

Cutest coffee shop around! It's in the heart of downtown Kent and within walking distance of lots of parking! The atmosphere of the shop is very welcoming and homey, especially with the fireplace in the middle of the room. The to go cups are a perfect reflection of what the shop is like. Any drink you get there is good! I love the plain ole coffee but they also have some unique lattes, like maple latte. Haven't had a pastry there that wasn't good either, but my favorite is the chocolate croissant (pictured here). It's flaky, fluffy and chocolatey. The peanut butter and jelly is also rich in flavor and toasted to perfection. Price is about $4 for a latte and $2 ish for a cup of coffee. Pastries tend to be a couple bucks, but it's worth it! For a small town, this is one of my favorite coffee shops of all time!

Nice and cute place to share a coffee. We didn't try any food, but the coffee and atmosphere was really nice and pleasant. The staff was nice and all following the precautions. Would like to come back to try either some of the food or other drinks they have.

So cute! My go-to study spot. Their coffee is always amazing and the breakfast sandwiches are like no other. The staff is all super sweet and takes the time to greet you and ask you about your day. They also have a free photo booth that sends the photos to your email which is a super cute touch.

Nice place to get a unique coffee when you're in the area. My wife had the pumpkin roll latte, daughter had the PB&J latte, and I had the maple pecan latte. Maple pecan latte is one of the best coffee drinks I've ever had. Not too sweet or overpowering. A perfect fall beverage. The place was decorated beautifully for Halloween and all the employees there were hard working and friendly. Enjoyed my visit there.

Very disappointing. Waited in the line in the drive thru for ten minutes, food & drinks passed back and forth between the car and the windows. I understand mistakes happen, but I don't understand why this customer wasn't directed inside so that order costumers in the drive thru could be serviced in a timely fashion. I had plans for obtaining my breakfast before work from TC and to not have it was disheartening.

Fabulous local favorite gathering spot. Students, families, townies... everybody stops in here for a crafted hot beverage and an artisan pb&j. They have butterbeer on the menu year round - perfect for the local Potterheads and Wizardly World of Kent fans!! Order one up and grab a set in front of the fireplace- sooooo relaxing. They also have a large selection of bottled wines for purchase that may be consumed on the premises.

My mother and I had breakfast at this adorable little coffee shop in downtown Kent. We both had sausage, egg, and cheese bagels and were very happy. The coffee was delicious as well and it seemed as though there was a lot to choose from. The challenge is parking because they don't have a dedicated lot. This being said, be sure to bring change for the meters.

Very disappointed to see that they are no longer serving bagels from The Cleveland Bagel Company. Their bagels were so good and Tree City is no longer carrying the rosemary sea salt bagel. The bagel my husband got this morning appeared to be similar to those you can buy in the grocery store. While the coffee here is still good, the food, menu, and aesthetic just isn't as good as it was previously. UPDATE: Hopefully they didn't stop carrying The Cleveland Bagel Company's bagels because they supported a rally to defund the police. Kent isn't exactly the best place to express this view. Read the room, Tree City.

I hate leaving negative reviews but I must warn my fellow coffee shop lovers... don't get your hopes up for this one. I had been looking forward to trying Tree City for quite some time now, and I was beyond DISAPPOINTED. Today I made the 40 minute drive only to find out that their WiFi was down (I had planned to work remotely) and they were not giving out the password to their secured network. Also, a dirty chai with oat milk cost me $7 !!! and my cup was NOT filled and was merely lukewarm. I think someone burnt a bagel 1/2 way through my visit & it smelled awful. Again, I absolutely hate to leave negative reviews because I am all for supporting small local businesses... but between my excitement & long drive building up to this bad experience just about ruined my day. If anything, I'll give it a while before I return. I'm so sorry to be leaving this negative comment, I sincerely hope they can turn their service & quality around soon! Worth a shot, give em a try, but don't get too excited (like me). Support local!

This is one of my favorite places in Kent. I love their unique drinks and they have the best bagel options. Love going there whenever I can and highly recommend you give it a try!

Tree City has excellent coffee and other drinks. Their service is great! It was our first time visiting and staff explained the different options and made recommendations. We will definitely go back. I am eager to try their peanut butter sandwiches.
