Ōhaupō TreeChurch in New Zealand May Be the Coolest Thing You'll See Today

"The Ōhaupō TreeChurch is a unique outdoor venue in New Zealand, created by dairy farmer Barry Cox. It features a church grown from trees, providing a picturesque setting for weddings and events. The church is crafted from Alnus Imperialis trees for the roof canopy, Purple Dodonaea for the walls, and includes a marble altar from Barry's past church. The venue can host up to 120 guests, offering a magical experience amidst nature." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. We got married here on the 1st of February 2025! It was the most beautiful day and everything we could have ever imagined! Bev made the organisation process extremely smooth and even saved the day when I accidentally ripped my dress in our first dance - stitching it up in record time! Apart from the obviously beautiful gardens and tree church, the accomodation was perfect for getting ready in the morning and the venue provides freedom to choose your caterers, decorations and flowers. Thank you very much to Bev and Chris for giving us the perfect day!

The tree church was the first and only venue we looked at. We struggled to find a venue that we liked both the ceremony and reception vibe but as soon as we saw the tree church we were sold! This venue has an instant sense of calm when you drive in and the tree church its self is the most beautiful peaceful place, we will definitely be going back in years to come. Everyone at the wedding couldn’t stop talking about how amazing it was! So many beautiful photo spots your photographer will love it! Bev and Chris are such beautiful people! They are very professional and have the grounds looking absolutely perfect for the day, they were so easy and quick to deal with, which when planning a wedding is a huge bonus. They have lots of vendor suggestions to make the planning process smoother aswell. The accommodation was so lovely, and so well maintained. We can’t recommend them enough they were so genuine and no other venue could compare

We got married here in November and cannot recommend it highly enough! The venue is absolutely breathtaking with so many lovely locations for photos that there is no need to go anywhere else. Bev was so lovely and supportive both in the lead up and on the wedding day. We also used the two rooms on site which were great. Thank you both so much for being a part of our day, We so appreciate it!

Hauntingly beautiful place. One of the most stunning and simple Churches we've ever seen. A must visit if you're around Hamilton! Make sure to have cash on you if you don't own a New Zealand Debit card though. Creditcard and international Debits won't work unfortunately. The entrance fee for Adults is 20 Dollars each but well worth it!

Apologies for the belated review… we had the most wonderful wedding day at the Tree Church and Gardens in December 2023. The church, gardens, gantry and accommodation were perfect for our day and owners Bev and Chris made our dreams come true here. We couldn’t have had a better day. Highly recommend this venue for your wedding!

We only found out about this place from a local. A very well kept secret. I understand they do have weddings, garden groups and functions in the summer. Apparently it is better known internationally than locally. You probably need to phone if you plan to visit in case it is booked. We went on an advertised open day. I thought $20 was quite a lot per person but if you knew to take a picnic it would be better value for money. More casual visitors would probably result in more bookings. The tree church itself is an amazing idea and the formal type garden would be perfect for film sets or weddings. There are lots of different parts to the garden and it is beautifully maintained.

The Tree Church is one of the most gorgeous venues I have ever been to. I was looking for an outdoor wedding, beautiful gardens ✔️ friendly owners who go above and beyond ✔️✔️ ability to have photos on site in various locations ✔️✔️✔️ reception venue on site with ability to self cater ✔️✔️. The tree church also has the most stunning accomodation. Bev and Chris made sure absolutely everything for our wedding was perfect. I could not fault 1 single thing (despite it having rained before hand for days on end). They have back up plans for everything and go out of their way to ensure you are happy. The church itself is absolutely stunning. Covered in greenery and roses. The part we loved it we didn’t have to have religious elements but if a coup chose to they could. Bev and Chris you truly are the most amazing hosts. We can wait to go back in January to celebrate our first anniversary with a picnic in the gardens.

Been wanting to come here for a long time and this place only opens on Sunday. The inside is maintained well and experiencing the nature is very peaceful. The tree church itself is very tidy and I like the little red roses on the side. I wish this place has a cheaper entrance fee though, since the time spent here is probably for only 1 hour or so and at the current price, doesn't offer much of a revisiting chance.

Yelp
There is a $15NZ entrance fee here and I feel that is a bit steep for what it is...that being said, I paid it because it was a beautiful day and grounds are gorgeous as is the Tree Church itself. It is in fact a quasi-enclosed space completely covered by tree growth. It is absolutely beautiful and kind of surreal to stand in. There is a gorgeous garden area where little yellow and white butterflies were flitting around everywhere making it seem as if you were caught in some sort of impressionist painting. There is also this little foot maze that you walk around and there were some beautifully situated benches under some gorgeous trees. It was a treat to sit down under one of the trees, close my eyes and let the cacophony of buzzing and hummin insects, chirping birds, soft wind, and distant chatter mixed with the whirling scents of freshly mowed grass, soft fragrant flowers, and the waft of soft earth assault my senses in the most invigorating way. That alone might have been worth the price of admission...
