What an awesome place! The room was tidy and clean and the jacuzzi in our bathroom was a very welcome extra. Carlos, the receptionist is very hospitable. Great guy! Dinner in the restaurant on the second floor is a recommendation also. Very tasty seviche, wine and pisco sour! And perfect service :-) The interior of the hostel is very pretty and unique.

Staff is super friendly and helpful. The rooms are very dark, except a very small window in the bathroom our room had no windows at all, therefore also lacking fresh air. Neither chair nor desk in the room, a little bench beside the night tables and the bed was all the furniture in the room. Good comfortable bed. The restaurant serves excellent food and offers a nice little terrace that would need a little attention to details and a new floor since from there, on rainy days water is leaking into the otherwise nice common area and lobby. Service at the restaurant is very good, food excellent and super nicely presented. Breakfast is o.k. WiFi in the room is o.k., however since there is no desk or chair to sit on not really all that usefull. WiFi signal in the lobby area was weak and therefore Internet very slow. In your room you'll hear your neighbours TV, snoring or conversations any time. I got a feeling that this hotel is at a turning point of having had its best times, if it gets some serious attention now it might turn around and remain one of the better options to stay in Puerto Montt, if not the friendly and helpful staff will eventually strungle to make up for what is lacking facility wise. I would recommend the restaurant even if you are not staying at the hotel.

My wife Tracy and I spent over 5 days at this unique hostel. It was magnificent and wonderful. Although I am a bit disabled as my knees do not allow a lot of stairs I was still able to enjoy this great place. Also when I was concerned about feeling in a tomb because there was no window in our room--we were moved immediately by the staff to a room with windows and air circulation. The restaurant is great. food was excellent. Tracy --my wife --feels the Chupe de Jaibe is the best ever in Chile. We had meat, pasta, salads etc. all were wonderful. Carlos the waiter is one of the best people we have ever met. Ivan and Carlos at the desk were so helpful. Now a more personal experience--I had a heart event requiring ambulance service etc. I had such wonderful help as did my wife in getting to and from 2 different hospitals ..Then to get us back to Santiago--Pablo helped find a driver and we arrived home safely. This Hostal was so helpful, friendly, compassionate, and the best people ever. We were so blessed and grateful to have chosen this hostel. Thanks again to Carlos, Ivan and Pablo for all your help and friendship.

I stayed here in April and would not return to this hostel. It's strange to give a 2 rating for a place that actually looks like it should be great...but....it fails in two basic areas||||1) Hot Water - The water was cold/warm..by the time I had suffered and got out, I realised it had warmed up...SAVE water stickers are ironic if you need to run water because they can't be bothered to fix water problem, looking at previous reviews it's ongoing problem they know about, why have not fixed?||||2) Bed Bugs, My ankles were bitten by bed bugs...enough said... ||||FROM PREVIOUS REVIEWS IT SEEMS THEY KNOW OF THIS PROBLEMS AND DONT CARE TO FIX THEM.||||Other bad points: location is not good, in main road out of center. Price is way too much for the location, lack of hot water, bed bugs...staff at breakfast are poor, no interest in you...breakfast is a self service buffet and was ok. It's also noisy because rooms are along one corridor...so you will hear everyone as they leave/arrive.||||The good thing about this place is the investment inside..it looks fantastic, with the antiques, wood features, it's modern/new but traditional, room was actually very nice apart from bed bugs. ||||They have a made a place that looks and feels like the real deal.....but scratch the surface and it fails.

The hostel is a 15 minute walk for the center of town up a slight hill. It was clean and quiet. Although there is a restaurant at the hotel, it was not open but there is a panadería across the street with a nice selection of food. Note that the panadería closes early. The room was clean but stuffy. A fan would have helped. My major complaint was that I was quoted a price in $US but the hostels' conversion rate when leaving was $877 CP/$US when the market rate was about $700 CP/$US. Beware.

Hotel Tren del Sur seems like a beautiful little hotel. It just has one major problem--my room was incredibly stuffy and hot. Now I realize that not all rooms are created equal; perhaps other rooms were better (my room was 301). And I realize that sometimes things vary based on temperature outside; perhaps in another season I would have found the room lovely. ||||However, the fact is that I could barely sleep in the room because of the heat and stuffiness. And, ironically, it was wonderfully cool and refreshing outside--practically a perfect temperature. I could not reach this weather though--the one window in the bathroom that faced the outside could only be opened a tiny bit to let in air. The other window looked out on the hallway and had to be shut because of the noise (but even if it was opened, it wouldn't have made things any cooler.)||||The room was also very gloomy. The lighting was terrible with very harsh fluorescents in weird fixtures. While these lights did not interfere with my sleep--they were off--they certainly didn't make things pleasant when I was awake. ||||I will say that the staff was very friendly and helpful. When I told them of my problem, they gave me a fan which made the room just comfortable enough to finally fall asleep--but it was not ideal and I had a fitful night. The breakfast was tasty and the rest of the hotel was very aesthetically pleasing. It was just my room. ||||I realize that to install air conditioning might be too great a cost at the moment--this is not an expensive hostel/hotel and hence I'm sure the margins are slim. While air-con is the ultimate solution, in the meantime the hotel could change too things: change the ability of the window to open all the way to let in more air; and change the light fixtures in the room. Even a different color temperature bulb will help relieve the gloom. ||||With these fixes, the hotel could (and should!) be wonderful. But as it stands I cannot recommend it.

A very cool, trendy place to stay a short walk from downtown. Very helpful staff and a great restaurant upstairs. Motorcycle friendly.||Good wifi speeds. The coffee shop across the road by the yoga studio is awesome.

Stayed on our way to Chiloe. When we arrived the room was not ready. Phone was not working, towels missing, and so on. I had to go to the front desk 3 times. Last time a young man told me "if you don't like it we can help you find another place"... quite arrogant answer from "customer service"... And in simple words "go away, we don't care"... I met the owner in the parking lot and He was total opposite. Quite helpful with tips and hints everywhere. Unfortunately his staff is not at the same level.
