OK stop for fresh lobster, very close to Acadia National Park.
Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound appeared on one of the top 10 lobster pound lists (pound meaning like a 'dog pound', except for lobster...the lobsters kept in a 'pound' are alive). Since it opens at 8 am, and we needed to be at Bar Harbor by 10am, this was a perfect location to try another lobster pound during our quick visit to Maine. We got there early (around 7), so took a quick nap while waiting. There is gravel parking, nearby. The owners were walking around and setting up shop, and sure enough, they opened their doors at 8 am sharp.
You order and pay at the register, first. We wanted to try whole lobster this time, so ordered two 1.6 lb lobsters (3.2 lbs total) which cost $47.84 (they charge $14.95 per pound cooked, $11.95 if to-go). The lobsters are stored in a cooler and I had no idea when they were caught (didn't ask how old they were to the owner...he was giving off the vibe that he didn't want to answer any dumb questions from a tourist). He chose two for us, and both were so lethargic. It is then cooked outside in sea water kettles, and given to you in about 20 minutes. Everything here is a la carte, so paid a little more for melted butter and an ear of corn. The melted butter (with lemon juice) really added to the flavor of the lobster, and the corn was sweet and perfectly steamed. The lobster meat was mixed: the claw and knuckle was very good, tender and so sweet. Both lobsters were femaies, so were full of roe...which I like. But the tail was tough and very chewy...it had been overcooked which quite frankly surprised me...my wife didn't want to finish her's, so I did and it ended up being a bit of a chore.
Everything about this was just OK: it was self-service for everything (they make that very clear in the signage around), the interaction with the owners was from grumpy to cheerful, prices were on the high side if compared to other pounds in the area, there is no outside view overlooking the river, and the food was not great to good. The environment adds a lot to the experience, and I'm sure there are other places where you can get the lobster more fresh.
We were the only customers throughout the 1 hour we spent here, and the various workers were setting up the area in preparation for the lunch rush, so it kinda felt like we were in their way. We really appreciated that they were open at 8 am, and gave us the opportunity to have fresh Maine lobster for breakfast...a good experience, which is why this is 3 stars, and not 2.
