On the Grid : Trilogy Library and Bookstore

"Trilogy is a heavily curated bookstore and library located inside Raghuvanshi Mills. It’s a warm and cosy place where you can spend hours immersed in some of the most highly recommended books, as well as books from small presses. The library is filled with cute little post-its with notes, recommendations, trivia, and even reviews by children in the form of drawings and doodles! Truly a great place to simply unwind and find some peace of mind amidst the hustle & bustle of Mumbai city." - Thought Over Design

Without a doubt the best book store in Bombay at this time. As a first time buyer, with no connections to the owners, we wandered in to Trilogy one afternoon with low expectations given our other experiences at book stores in Bombay (mostly mall stores, filled with pop sci, buisness books, religious books, or the same set of comics). However, we were pleasantly surprised! We left with too many books, some in Hindi (I'm working on improving my hindi, so thanks for that!), several indie comic books, and a delightful cross section of speculative fiction that I find myself returning to re-read often. We even found the perfect gift for my mom, a calendar fundraising for stray dogs and cats with the cutest pictures of indies and their doting humans in them. And yes, the owners are wonderful, and despite not knowing them before, we had a wonderful chat filled with useful recommendations curated to our tastes. Book shops are for browsing, it's odd to see reviews criticising a book store encouraging buyers to physically engage with their books. I guess the amazon age makes people buy books only based on their covers, I hope the poor souls scared of touching books get over it and experience the joy of holding a book, turning it's pages and even relishing the smell of new books!

Possibly my favourite bookstore in all of Bombay. Run by a lovely lady who is always willing to share her valuable insights and answer silly questions. A really good collection, I’m always able to leave with a book that feels exactly right. Also, it has the perfect book smell through the rooms which is arguably the best part!

Not worth the visit. The place is tucked away in a remote interior location, making it hard to find. The surrounding lane is narrow and unclean, adding to the unpleasant experience right from the start. Once inside, the management is unwelcoming and overly intrusive—constantly urging visitors to pick up a book and browse through, which feels more pushy than inviting. The collection itself is quite limited, and honestly, there’s not much to explore. As for the five-star reviews, they appear to come mostly from people who know the owner personally. First-time visitors are treated poorly, with a judgmental attitude from both the owner and staff. The overall experience was disappointing and uncomfortable. If you're expecting a warm, friendly space to enjoy books, this is not it. Avoid.

Well this bookstore has everything anyone could ask, the vibe itself is curated by owners they deeply understand the vibe of a comfortable space to only read but to expand, thrive and delve into different realms.

Don’t fall for the hype or the fake 5-star reviews, this place is a joke. Hidden in a filthy, narrow lane, it’s a nightmare to even find. By the time you reach it, you’re already questioning why you bothered. The staff, including the owner, are outright rude. Instead of letting you explore at your own pace, they keep hovering and pestering you to pick up a book, like you’re doing something wrong by just looking around. The vibe is uncomfortable and far from welcoming. As for the collection? Barely anything worth your time. The selection is tiny, and the space feels more like a pretentious personal library than a place meant for visitors. It’s obvious most of the glowing reviews are from friends or acquaintances of the owner. If you’re not part of their inner circle, expect to be treated like you don’t belong. The entire experience was off-putting and frankly, insulting. Don’t waste your time or energy here. You’ll leave annoyed, not inspired.

I always love to visit independent bookshops in the cities I travel to. The charm of such bookshops is that you are able to build a relationship with them from the moment you enter the shop. It's about personalised services that big chains cannot match. I learnt about Trilogy Bookshop through social media and made a point to visit it on my recent trip to Mumbai. The shop is located at the end of a small alley in the neighbourhood of Bandra. From outside it looks very small, but once you enter it you realise that it's quite spacious. The shop is strategically divided into different sections and they have a library where you can sit and read books on the first floor. I absolutely loved the collection of graphic novels they had and picked up a couple of books for myself. The shop is absolutely beautiful and very Instagrammable, but they have "No Photography" signs put up everywhere so I was only able to click a picture outside the store. Overall, the experience of visiting Trilogy was quite nice and I'd drop by here again when I'm in Mumbai.

One of the cutest bookshops I've ever visited. You can easily spend hours here just browsing through books. Would love to visit here on my every visit to Mumbai.
