On the Grid : Tropicaleo

"When Maria Isabel Marrero and husband Gabriel moved to Birmingham, they were thrilled to find a thriving, diverse food scene. But when they found themselves pining for the dishes of their native Puerto Rico, there was nowhere to go to scratch that itch. They would do it themselves! Beginning at pop-ups and festivals, Tropicaleo quickly gained an enthusiastic following. This lead to an awarded stint at Pizitz Food Hall's REVeal Kitchen, and culminated in their recently opened brick-and-mortar location. Using local ingredients whenever possible, Tropicaleo’s menu boasts Puerto Rican staples like tostones (crispy, twice-fried green plantain slices), canoitas, and the hearty mofongo. There’s also classic cubano sandwiches and jibaritos (sandwiches that use tostones in place of bread), savory empandas, and arroz con gandules. On the sweeter side, there’s vanilla flan and tembleque, best enjoyed with a Moka pot espresso. Or raise a glass with a mojito or ice cold coquito made with white Puerto Rican rum from Tropicaleo’s full bar. With plenty of vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and paleo options, Tropicaleo’s menu is every bit as welcoming as its friendly, laid-back setting." - Lewis Communications

I came in today excited for my oxtails ask for oxtails and extra gravy and rice and peas and broccoli and cheese w/ a side of yams I get my plate and it’s a plate of goat with extra gravy apparently they gave me the same plate just too the goat off. I got my plate back and ask for extra gravy look at the size of gravy they gave 😒 Yams was the most disgusting thing I’ve tried from here it wasn’t sweet at all nor did it have any flavor the broccoli isn’t steamed enough it’s hard. The only thing I should’ve got was rice and peas and oxtails that’s the only thing they get right. I hate my experience this was my third time coming and I just hate it had to be like this

Google
I ordered the brown stewed chicken lunch combo. This meal was absolutely DISGUSTING ! This is NOT Jamaican food at all ! The gravy is thick and textured like apple sauce, and it taste like gravy used to smother pork chops instead of STEW GRAVY $ My food is extremely cold, and the food is extremely BLAND ! There is NO SEASONING on this dood. Also, I bought coco bread and did not receive it. I am extremely disappointed because I am currently pregnant and had this craving on my mind for weeks ! I don’t know what is going on, but this food was disgusting. I should’ve trusted my gut and never ordered.

We had a taste for oxtails and they didn’t disappoint. Very tender and flavorful. Really good mom & pop, family-owned restaurant.

I find Jerk Chicken everywhere I travel. Tropical Grill was not the best Jerk I have ever had. But it had a little kick. Which made it delicious. I would have liked more peas in my rice :^) The corn bread was better than I expected.

Google
The worst service I’ve ever experienced. I ordered online and went to pick up my food, but I forgot the phone I used for the order. The employee refused to give me my food, claiming I needed to confirm the order on my phone or DoorDash wouldn’t pay him. I went all the way back to my office to get my phone, only to find out there was NOTHING for me to confirm—it was something he had to do on his end. Instead of apologizing, he laughed. Then came the food… completely inedible. The small piece of bread was soaked in gravy, and the entire meal was overpriced for what I received. This place is clearly a hobby for the owner, not a serious business. Avoid at all costs.

Yelp
Oxtails, jerk, and ting... oh my! Well-run, clean, hole-in-the-wall spot in Bessemer. Order at the front and they'll bring out beautiful, fall off the bone chicken with the most fragrant spices. I tried the jerk chicken and pineapple chicken. The jerk chicken was definitely my favorite. Rice and peas were standard and delicious. Mac and cheese was Southern-style and good. I recommend also ordering a fun soda, they have lots of unique options you can't find just anywhere. I tried the grapefruit and grape. All in all, Tropical Grill is worth trying, especially if you like spice and interesting flavors. Any sort of meat with sauce over rice is a winner in my book. Parking is in the back!

Yelp
Food only good for a turd! The taste the look everything was not Jamaican I was tricked!! My husband had jerk and it taste like vinegar. I had stewed chicken that was cooked like a pot roast and the macaroni was cut throat dry. The cabbage had absolutely no love put into it at all and the peas and rice were tasteless and overcooked . I spent good money on bad product. Sorry for the bad review but they knew better and the folks that love this place have NEVER HAD REAL CARIBBEAN FOOD! I wanted to like it for no other reason than to spend with a black business but they bending folks over.

Yelp
Authentic Jamaican food in West Birmingham: We tried multiple dishes, including the jerk chicken, pineapple chicken, yams and meat pie. Ambiance and service were lacking but the jerk chicken was worth the drive.

Yelp
Had a taste for a beef patty and some spicy jerk chicken. Man it was really good and fresh. Service was also good.

Yelp
Wow, I feel absolutely bamboozled! They were advertising Rasta Pasta on their menu so I ordered it. Couldn't order it as a side, so I had to purchase a whole entree. I opened the box to pure disappointment. I think the person back there cooking is cosplaying as Jamaican because there's no way, they thought to serve this! Also, it tastes just as bad as it looks. I'm so sad, this was a great waste of money.

Yelp
My food was finished in about 10 min which is good considering how much I got. I got the jerk chicken platter (came with cornbread & a plantain), rice & peas, mac and cheese, and coco bread. The jerk chicken was good. They actually give you FOUR pieces which is really good for the price. It wasn't spicy so if you don't like spicy jerk chicken, this is a good spot for you. Do NOT get the mac and cheese. It wasn't very flavorful. Also, if you're new to jamaican restaurants, they tend to make their mac and cheese differently from how soulfood spots do so don't expect the same mac and cheese. I usually like both, but this one was just kind of bland tasting to me. The rice and peas were good. I really liked the cornbread. It was soft, not hard. The service was standard. Not service with a smile, but also not rude at all. The ambiance was really nice. You can tell they put a lot of effort into decorating their restaurant in a jamaican theme.

Yelp
First time trying tropical grill, and it was great, and it represents Jamaican cuisine to its fullest. I purchased the goat with rice and peas with cabbage and could not complain. The order even comes with sweet bread. It all mixed well together. I will return; thank you, tropical grill.

Yelp
Had the jerk chicken wasn't crazy about it should have stuck with oxtails but they didn't have any

Yelp
I've been searching for good Jamaican food for a while. I was told about Topical Grill through word of mouth. I been planing on trying this place for a while and I'm glad I did. When you enter the restaurant, it's what you think a typical Jamaican restaurant would look like. The service was good. I liked the ambiance. I ordered jerk chicken, rice and peas, macaroni and plantain. Everything was good. The macaroni was okay, it's nothing I would order again. My over all experience was good, I can't wait to go back and try more items. I'm excited to try a beef patty.

Yelp
I loce jamaican food so I've been on the hunt for it here in birmingham for a while now. I discovered this place here on yelp and decided to give it a try. Due to COVID-19 you must wear a mask to come in, dine in is not available. Their prices are fair, and I really like that they offer S, M and L size options. All entrees come with 2 sides (plantains are not considered a side, have to order separate). I decided to go with the large jerk chicken, double rice and peas, and a large side of fried plantains. My total came out to be $17 and some change. Overall the service was very quick, the lady that took my order was very nice and polite. The food was great, the chicken was seasoned great and was spicy (i like spicy). I asked for extra sauce with my chicken and was very pleased when I opened my plate.

Yelp
I ordered the jerk chicken with cabbage and broccoli. The jerk chicken was really good - sweet and spicy. The chicken was also very tender. I stayed away from the carbs this go around, but I would definitely recommend one of your sides be rice to soak up the juice of whatever main entree you order, in this case, jerk chicken marinade. The vegetables were not as good as some other Jamaican places I've eaten at, and there was no hot bar with multiple dishes ready to be plated and eaten. But Jamaican food in Birmingham is definitely a plus nonetheless.

Yelp
Wah Gwan! Not fluent in Patois but I know good food when I taste it and this is one of those spots that you'll have to try if you're nearby. AUTHENTIC Jamaican cuisine is what you'll encounter! I had the Brown Stewed Chicken with Cabbage and Rice & Beans. The chicken was juicy, hot, and seasoned to perfection accompanied by my semi crunchy not to soft Cabbage and the rice and beans just took up to another level. I like to eat so I even got me a Jamaican Beef patty while I waited for my food! It was perfect pillowy (is that a word?, lol) crust filled succulent spicy beef inside. All I got left to say is go get you some! Bless up!

Yelp
I was craving oxtails, so I decided to come here for my fixing. I ordered oxtails with rice and peas and cabbage. I also ordered a chicken patty. I also ordered curry chicken with the same sides for my friend. The food was good, but it takes about 10-15 minutes to get your food. You get about 5 or 6 large oxtails. Not what I was expecting for the price, but nonetheless, it's good. The parking is located behind the building and if people don't park correctly, it can be hard to get in and out of the lot. One bonus of this restaurant is that it appears to be a family owned restaurant.

Yelp
This is the best Caribbean food I've tasted from a restaurant . Try the jerk Chicken , it's delicious. Great Service. And asked about desserts. Recommend Banana Pudding. I rate this place 99 in my book

Yelp
It's rare I get to eat some of my heritage food nowadays. This meal was definitely a heart tugger (in a good way). The location is a little odd as it's on the main Bessemer super highway but it's easy to access. The actual restaurant is quite quaint but it gets the job done. The keep was young but respectful, and his father the owner was nice as well . I ordered the Pineapple Chicken, Broccoli w/ Plantains, Baked Mac & Cheese, and muffin. I also got a fresh Chicken Patty. The Patty was definitely tasty and full of flavor; the sauce and chicken was great and chunky, the pasty flaky, and it was right amount of heat kick. The broccoli was a little under seasoned but nothing that would put anyone off. The plantains were tender and great. The baked mac & cheese was definitely melty and cheesy. It tasted more southern than Jamaican but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The pineapple chicken was so dang good. So hot, so juicy. The chicken, pineapples, and potatoes were on point! So much goodness in this meal! I'll definitely be back here if I'm on this side of town!

Yelp
The food is always beyond delicious. I enjoy the Curried Goat and the Ox tails with rice, beans and cabbage.

Yelp
I got the curry chicken and it was delicious! So savory. And I got the chicken patty and it's so so good! I almost finished it in the car.

Yelp
This is one of the few authentic Jamaican restaurants in Bham and the food is amazing! The Oxtails is my favorite ( a little pricey, but totally worth it!). The meat is sooo tender and succulent, and you can just slurp it off the bone!!! The brown gravy sauce that Oxtail come marinated in is delicious! It goes great with the rest of the meal! Definitely would recommend!

Yelp
I ordered oxtails fro this restaurant today. They were the worst tasting priciest oxtails I have ever had! They were tasteless and almost made me throw up. They had "0" seasoning. Never again!!!
google avatar

Yelp
The food is good. My boyfriend enjoys their oxtails and I enjoy their curry, however the service is so bad. The last time I went we decided that was more than likely the last time we will ever go again. The girl behind the counter had a headache and made sure everyone knew she was feeling unwell, discussed her prescriptions and medications she wanted in front of the guests and had a bad attitude. I understand not feeling well, but that was unacceptable. Someone should have filled in for her and gave her a break during this time. The older lady also forgot to serve us our food as well-- and it's like they forgot about us many times. We also called and asked if they had oxtails before hand and they said yes to come get some. So we drove the twenty minutes there and they were out after we already ordered them. They also need to get their hours right. Said they opened at said time one day, we went right at opening and the guy said he wasn't going to open for a few more hours since he just arrived and nobody prepped. Over all it was just a bit unprofessional. Good food, but the lack of curtesy really has turned me away.

Eyanna B.

Yelp
If I could them a 0, I would. But worst of all was the customer service !!!!!!! I drove almost 30minutes for this food to leave with the worst case of food poisoning! I noticed that the chicken was raw when I got home and I called them immediately asking if I could get my meal remade (mistake #1)... long story short I couldn't make it up there to claim my new free meal until 2 days later. Before even leaving my house, I called and confirmed, the man who answered the phone argued that it wasn't raw, I told him that I had pictures and that I would come up there and show him. Turns out when I get there the chef is in the front and again tries to argue that it wasn't raw until I pulled out my phone and showed her these pictures attached. Her response to the pictures was "my bad, I was rushing". At this point, I didn't come to argue, I just wanted my Jamaican food..... she tells me that they won't remake me a plate bc the food isn't ready so they would just give me a refund. She pulled up my receipt and refunded me the price of the food but not my tip ($2.50 extra) I said ma'am I need my full money... she said that if she gave me my tip then it would mess up her budget books, I told her that I sent a tip for a service, I was not provided that service therefore I need it back. She gave me $11 dollars (my meal price) back in cash & $2.50 (the tip) back in cash as well. 20 minutes later I receive a call from a lady (im assuming the chef) at the Tropical Grill and she said that originally my tip never went through.... I said yes it did, I even have my bank statement to prove it (one of the photos down below) but without my authorization she took another $2.51 out of my account!!! I did claim fraud on this restaurant and it ruled as fraudulent activity. During this pandemic I made it a priority to support black business... but this one put a disgrace on it for me! Customer service is key and she went about compensating me the WRONG way. And not to mention cared nothing about my health. Don't eat here. I repeat do not eat here.

Yelp
I've been looking for a Jamaican restaurant nearby since I moved back home from Mobile. Tropical grill will be my go to now. The customer service was great! The lady that took my order was very friendly and helpful. The customer behind me had several questions and she answered all of them. I'm very indecisive; so I ordered the brown stew chicken with rice & peas and cabbage. I also ordered a beef patty with coco bread. I usually order ox tails or jerk chicken when I go to a Jamaican restaurant. I plan on going back again this week to try the oxtail, which are my favorite. It's a 30 minute drive for me but so worth it.

Yelp
When it comes to authentic Jamaican food this is your go to spot, Jamaican owned and ran. Great prices and great food overall, it's really a great whole in the wall type spots in Birmingham that not many people know about, which kind of makes sense given its location. Now let's talk about how lazing the jerk chicken is and rice and beans, cabbage and Mac&cheese, flavor and taste unmatched and untouched I really don't see a place beating them. As far as Covid goes and precautions and regulations at this establishment didn't really care much for it but people coming and going had on masks. I got my food to go and was fresh and ready for me overall food wise 10/10. They could do more as far as precautions for Covid goes.

Yelp
This place is great! My wife and I shared brown stew chicken with cabbage and plantains, and it was a generous portion for a good price. It was quite busy when we came by, but it came out pretty quickly, and you could tell it was made fresh.

Antonice L.

Yelp
I am always on the hunt for a GOOD Jamaican/Caribbean restaurant. I'm from The Bahamas so, it's in the blood. I found this by a google search. I got the curry chicken and a beef pattie(can't leave without a pattie!) I loved the curry. It was seasoned and tasty! I drove almost 30 minutes there to get some food and I was NOT disappointed. I'll be back again!
google avatar

Noc I.

Yelp
This place and Jake's Soul Food are neck and for best oxtails in the city. I think I give them the nod due to it being more spicy and I loved it. I also had the cabbage and it was probably the best in the city. It's not your typical southern cabbage. I will definitely be back and try the jerk chicken next time.
google avatar

NikNik P.

Yelp
This was my first time here. I ordered the pineapple chicken, plantains and rice. I cost about $10.00. Overrall it was good. I will probably come back.

Zaria W.

Yelp
Soooo yummy! So glad I saw this gem and stopped by. The food was amazing and so were the prices! I'll definitely be back soon. I had the lunch special with jerk chicken, Mac and cheese, and rice and peas and cocoa bread! SO good!!
google avatar

Gloria H.

Yelp
I pick this place upon reviews, so the service was great, but the food wasn't, I order curry chicken med..only 3 round bones, thick curry gravy not cooked all the way and cabbage was over cook..I wasted $10.Maybe they are the BEST! If you never had real curry before!! I'm just saying..to each is own!! Just my opinion.
google avatar

Shea B.

Yelp
Wish I had the chance to try the food. However the young lady taking orders waited on 3 gentlemen and decided she wanted to go next door to the store. Oh well fish and fries from American Deli it is. Alabama has been great up to this point. I'll try for dinner with Hope's for a different staff member
google avatar

Sarena W.

Yelp
This place is an authentic little piece of the Caribbean stuck in Birmingham (I might be stretching it as I haven't been to the Caribbean much - heading there now!). But, this was a great stop for goat curry on our way through Alabama. The spinach was tasty with the rice and savory goat - a little spice MMM. The eating area is smaller - mostly takeout orders. The staff and other customers were extremely friendly and fun to talk to. The two of us who didn't order drinks received free sodas on the house. I would stop again - so satisfied!
google avatar

T. C.

Yelp
I was directed to this location by a local. The menu is typical Jamacian fare with lunch specials. I was not impressed with it the flavor was a bit bland. I had curry chicken, mac & cheese, mixed veg and cabbage. The mixed veg looked like it was canned so I left it alone.
google avatar

Kenya B.

Yelp
I've been going here for about 3 years now, the food is great and the staff is very friendly. My biggest problem with this place is that it's not closer to where I live.
