The Best Hotels in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada - AFAR

"Trout Pond Lodge enjoys a loyal following for its secluded, woodsy location in the Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve. Self-described as a luxury wilderness resort, the retreat features a main timber lodge that could have been airdropped from a U.S. national park, complete with eight suites done up in handmade log-and-twig furniture, original artworks, and Italian tile or stone bathrooms. Nearby on the property Beaver Hall offers three rooms and a grand lounge with a stone fireplace, while two-bedroom Black Bear Cottage has a full kitchen. Two acclaimed restaurants showcase local fare like scallops served with herbs fresh from the on-site garden; the cellar holds more than 170 wines. Expect to unplug here—there’s no cell service." - Barbara Peck

My wife and I had such an incredible honeymoon at Trout Point Lodge! Staff were beyond accommodating and made us feel so comfortable at all times. We took part in so many activities while we were there including stargazing, forest bathing, hiking, kayaking, hot tub and sauna, cold river plunge, massages, and yoga. Our room was immaculate and luxurious but still rustic which we loved. The food is to die for, every meal was such a fun experience! We enjoyed all the hot beverages available as well as going to the lodge for tea time snacks. The cocktails were delicious and I enjoyed some bottles of local Rummed Cider. The staff were really a highlight for us, such a fantastic team! We can't wait to come back

We spent 2 nights at the Inn, staying the main lodge. I can’t recommend it enough - our room was quiet and comfortable, we had two amazing, gourmet dinners, and we enjoyed a paddle board meditation experience and mushroom identifying walk with the naturalist. The outdoor hot tub is fantastic. It was too cloudy to star gaze, but I have no doubt that it’s magical. It really feels like you’re away from it all and the staff went out of their way to make us happy. We hope to return!

A relaxing, first-class, intimate scale nature retreat with top-notch warm and attentive service, wonderful dining and a gorgeous lodge-in-the-woods-by-the-river setting. Enjoyed cocktails by the fire, nicely imagined and executed fine dining and miles (or kilometers) of secluded hiking and a renewed appreciation for nature. Plus a relaxing hot tub and spa above the river. A perfect weekend escape.

Trout Point Lodge was the highlight of our honeymoon. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating the entire trip, beginning with our late arrival off of the ferry into Yarmouth- they kept the kitchen open late so we could have an exquisite dinner upon arriving, while our bags were taken to our room. In our time there, we enjoyed the Tobeatic Wilderness through numerous guided activities. The lodge is truly enmeshed in its natural surroundings, right down to foraging local plants for a number of dishes and beverages. And in all my backpacking and camping in the United States- as deep in the wilderness as you can get in the contiguous 48- I have never seen as many stars as I did from Trout Point.

This was booked by our excellent travel agent. As she's so good I only skim read about this relying on her judgement. Consequently the whole experience here was almost a total and wonderful surprise. Amazing room, superb location and wonderful food. We did three of the activities. These were all led by Daina. She was so knowledgeable about the area, the plant life and astronomy. Having said that all the staff were excellent. I must also give Gerard their musician a mention. He was very good and kind enough to let me join him on my accordion. Our stay will live long in our memory.

We ended our exploration of Nova Scotia and a week long bike ride on the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton with a two night stay here and it couldn't have been a better ending to celebrating our 49th wedding anniversary. Overall the hospitality was fabulous and the room we stayed in beautifully decorated and timeless. The food was exquisite with the chefs lamb shanks melting in our mouths and the daily pastries by Wendy having us suggest a cook book should be forthcoming! We would rush to purchase! The wait staff were also so engaging and we loved having an opportunity to talk with them a bit in-between courses. We took a 7 mile hike up to Billy's cabin in the Tobeatic Wilderness area, on a trail that was sometimes delightfully overgrown, learning about the history of the area and its flora and fauna . Our personable and informative guide, Nicola made this part of our stay extra special! We couldn't have done this hike without her! The outdoor hot tub and sauna by the river was a magical night time experience. After breakfast our last morning, we took out a canoe and explored the upper part of the river for about an hour, wishing we had more time. It was so quiet and we noticed that both on the hike and on the river we heard very few birds. Maybe concrete evidence that world wide, birds are disappearing at a rate that is beginning to be noticeable. Finally, thank you for accommodating a change in our reservations at the last minute due to a flight snafu. If we weren't so far away ( Washington State) we would return!

My wife and I stayed at the lodge for our tenth anniversary. We had a wonderful time! The room (we were in the Wildflower Room) was large, comfortable and very clean. The lodge common areas and outdoor facilities were great. Staff and owners were super friendly and helpful. We ate two dinners, a lunch, and two breakfasts there and all were delicious. We had the five course meal with wine pairings for our anniversary dinner and it was just plain wonderful! Ocean, the sommeliere, was very good both in the wines she chose for us and in explaining why she chose each wine to go with each dish. Highly recommended.

Yelp
There are 2 different ways to arrive at the lodge. We took the more desolate route. It is about 30 - 45 minutes from the town of Shelburne along this route in which we came across two bear cubs on the road. We arrived late in the evening around 9 PM. The lodge is in the middle of the forest so you have to travel down a dirt road to reach it. We were greeted promptly with a glass of wine. The lodge is decorated nicely. We sat outside by the fire pit. It was a little buggy and it would have been nice if the citronella candle torches were lit. We wanted to use the jacuzzi but it was not available because they had cleaned it and the water was not warm enough. We went to bed around 11:30 and to our surprise our room was filled with bugs. At first, we thought they would not bother us but they flew into our mouths and landed on our body while sleeping so I kept the light on in the bathroom. This helped the problem somewhat but it was difficult to sleep with the light. In addition, there were several cobwebs in the room with spiders. Spiders build nests where there are bugs so this seems to be an issue in this room. In addition, it was hot in the room so we kept the fan on but this caused another issue - the fan kept making constant noises; keeping us awake all night. Due to the bugs and the noisy fan, it was not a tranquil night and we slept very little. In the morning, I noticed that the screens on the windows had gaps between them and the window pane, and I believe this is why there were so many bugs in the room as evident in the picture. The management told me that they are aware of these gaps. It is due to the expansion and contraction of the wood. Okay, so why isn't there a solution since we are paying so much money to stay there? A simple solution is to seal the gaps with the following: Scotch 1.88 in. x 54.6 yds. Heavy Duty Shipping Packaging Tape (3-Pack). Thus, I recommend visiting Home Depot and buy the tape if you plan to stay there so you will avoid a sleepless night. In addition, check the fan when visiting your room for the first time and request a new room if it makes noise. We never got to enjoy any of the amenities since we were so tired.
