I sent an email asking to check in 1 hour early a week before my reservation. I never got a response. I called the day before and asked if it was possible to check in early and was told it might be possible. I arrived 30 mins early. My room wasn't ready, which is fine, and the front desk lady politely told me check in time is after 3. So, I sat down. I'm still here waiting at 3:45 pm. I have watched no less than 8 families/couples check in before me. No one has offered an apology or even acknowledged that I am still waiting. The lobby seems ok. At this point, I might as well take a nap by the lovely fireplace. I can't comment on the room because I haven't even seen it yet, but since I started typing this review, 2 more groups have checked in. If I could cancel and book a hotel that actually wants my business, I would. I will never stay here again.
Update: we finally got checked in at 4 pm. On a positive note, the room was reasonably clean, and the location is great. Boreal is 15 mins away and has night skiing. Downtown Truckee is a 5 mins away and has plenty of decent restaurants/pubs. There is a large convenience store and a Taco Bell within walking distance if you need a snack.
After skiing, we decided to use the hot tub, which is open til 10 pm. When we got outside, the pool area was very dark, and there was a cover on the hot tub. It looked closed, so we decided to go inside to ask. Getting inside was not as easy as it should have been. The card reader for the door into the hotel would not read our key card, so we had to walk around to the front. The front desk attendant explained the hot tub is open, it is dimly lit, and it is ok to remove the cover. We appreciated the clarification. When I told him about the door not working, he said, "Actually, it does. You don't even need the key. You just have to pull on it". Confused, we returned to the pool area to use the hot tub, which was relaxing and great. After using the tub, we tried once again to use our card to get back into the hotel. I thought maybe I just didn't do it right or something. Both of us tried it. Actually, it doesn't work, so we had to walk around to the front, dripping wet, through the lobby. I was cold and the clerk was on the phone, so I didn't bother to report it a second time.
Some of the staff members are wonderful. The woman out, there was a different woman at the front desk. She was attentive and nice.
Overall, this place is just ok. Some of the staff members would benefit from some customer service training. I understand that our room wasn't ready, but they could have acknowledged that we were still waiting while 10 other groups checked in. It would have gone a long way.
