I live nearby, so Trunk is my living room. In fact I'm shocked I've never reviewed it.
The main restaurant is a lovely old building. Originally a Synagogue, then a school for disadvantaged kids. Finally a restaurant. So the blue plaque on the building says anyway.
The building is surrounded by outdoor dining, that verges on beer garden, but is a bit more formal. The new-ish addition is the diner, which serves up traditional diner fare - burgers and the like.
The food is okay, but I've never had anything particularly notable. Actually I quite like the burgers, which is a credit given all the competition for the Melbourne burger coin at the moment. They are reasonably sized, can be eaten with your hands and come semi-deconstructed on a platter so you can decide exactly how you'd like your burger. Plus they have housemade tomato sauce that is particularly great.
That said, I can't say there is anything massively outstanding about Trunk. However, it's certainly versatile. You can go for sit down meal, a burger, a beer session. You could be sitting down or standing in the sun. You'll likely rub shoulders into a local, someone in a suit or a hens party.
Trunk is a well run operation. The staff are drilled. Service is quick and efficient. Given they run a big operation 18 hours ever day I guess it needs to be.
Another plus for Trunk is they are open long hours every day. So a reliable go-to if you're stuck thinking of somewhere to grab a drink or bite. That said, they occasionally do close for private functions. Particularly Weddings on Sundays.
Tip: If you're a local, they do their pizzas take-away - even if the bar staff are a bit confused, they definitely do. The pizza isn't amazing on the whole, but their margarita is worth a crack.
