We went to the Truss & Trestle Diner in Rosendale for an early dinner tonight. It was our first visit, and after hearing several positive comments, I was looking forward to finally trying it. I’ll say right away: I will be returning — very soon.
The interior looked just as I imagined from driving by: clean, well-done, and fully committed to the truss-and-trestle theme. It’s not a large space, but very comfortable, with booth seating up front, a few tables in the back room and a long countertop facing a full bar. I was especially pleased that the owners resisted the trend of hanging televisions on the walls. (I understand that in sports bars — but not when I’m trying to enjoy a meal)
The Pulled Pork dinner I ordered exceeded expectations. The portion was large, and the pork was perfectly seasoned — flavorful without being drowned in sauce. It was served over hand-cut cheese fries that were crisp and not oily, clearly cooked in fresh oil. The dish was topped with fresh red cabbage and a few habanero slices. Everything was cooked perfectly and served hot and promptly.
She had a chicken & bacon sandwich that came with the same hand cut fries. The meal was perfectly cooked and very hot. The taste, seasoning and size of the sandwich was very good.
Service was great, but we were the only patrons at the time we were there, it was early for dinner.
I would comment though - throughout our dinner a gentleman who appeared to be the owner using his loud “outside” voice was having a discussion with the waitress as he walked around behind the counter. The lengthy discussion was mostly about how annoying customers can be and the type of questions they ask. I wouldn’t want to hear my dentist complain about his patients as I’m in the chair, same holds for restaurant owners where I am currently dining. With the volume he was speaking at, and no other patrons in the place providing ambient noise we often had to pause our dinner conversation. I am chalking that up to a one-time thing, we were the only customers there for early dinner, maybe he wasn’t customer service focused right then. As more customers entered, he did go in the back.
All that aside, the food, service, and atmosphere were excellent — and I’m not only planning to return; I’m genuinely eager to.
