On the Grid : Truth Coffee

"Voted as one of the [world's top coffee shops](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/drinks/the-worlds-best-coffee-shops/), a visit to the East City is incomplete without a caffeine stop at this steampunk inspired, quirky café. While the decor alone is something out of a film, the real reason locals flock here is to get their hands on a steaming cup of hand-roasted joe, believed to be crafted from the best beans in the city." - Infestation

10 Best Coffee Shops in Cape Town

"This steampunk-inspired, 19th-century artisan coffee roastery in an old warehouse in City Centre has become a tourist destination, thanks to its coffee lab vibe, gilded, industrial-chic interiors, vintage roaster complete with copper dispensers, gauges and hissing contraptions, and nattily dressed staff in full steampunk regalia. Truth is all about single-origin coffees, handpicked by the coffee-obsessed founder of Truth, David Donde. His blends have fabulous names: choose the chocolatey, high-acidity Resurrection blend for a flat white, the DDT (Deep, Dark and Twisted) for an Americano or the rich, nutty Vengeance blend as a pour-over coffee. The food's worth mentioning, too: In-house patisseur Kamal Hamzaoui hits the sweet spot with baba au rum, chocolate éclairs, and lemon meringue pie." - Jane Broughton

True Coffee Roasting is hands down the best coffee spot in Cape Town! The coffee is exceptiona, rich, perfectly roasted, and full of flavor. The food is just as impressive, fresh and beautifully prepared, making it the ideal place for breakfast, brunch, or just a quick stop to recharge. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, with a cool local vibe that makes you want to linger. And a fun tip: don’t ask for sugar in your coffee unless you’re ready for a playful “beating.” This is a true coffee lover’s paradise and a must-visit whether you’re a local or just passing through Cape Town.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆ (2.5 stars) Visited Truth Coffee for a quick stop—ordered a coffee and hot chocolate which came to R108 (excluding tip). The vibe is definitely unique and it's cool that you can play board games while you’re there. However, the service was below average, especially considering the place wasn't busy. The coffee was just okay—at R60, it didn’t feel worth the price. It looked a lot better than it tasted. The hot chocolate was cold and watery at first, though they did replace it with a better one, but still nothing special. Would return more for the atmosphere than the drinks.

Truth Coffee in Cape Town is an experience for all the senses. The space has a striking industrial-style décor, with every corner filled with unique details that make you want to look around and take it all in. Even the menu is creative designed like a newspaper, it adds a fun twist to the experience. While waiting for my order, I couldn’t help but notice the craftsmanship that went into the design of the place. From the lighting fixtures to the furniture, everything feels intentional and part of a larger story. The staff were extremely attentive and friendly. During a casual chat with one of their coffee specialists, I learned that they also source Brazilian coffee beans to create their blends a detail that made me appreciate my cup even more!

The space had such a cool and funky vibe, with an atmosphere that felt effortlessly creative and relaxed. It was the kind of place where you immediately feel at ease, whether you are catching up with friends or enjoying a quiet solo brunch. The service was warm and attentive without ever being overbearing. The menu was full of interesting and tempting options that made it hard to choose. I ended up ordering the avo Benedict and was so glad I did. The eggs were perfectly poached with silky yolks, and the avocado was at that just-right stage of ripeness that is hard to come by. The tomatoes on the plate were bursting with flavor, so much so that I found myself wishing there had been more than just three. The topping on the Benedict was absolutely divine, adding a rich and flavorful finish to an already beautiful dish. If I had to pick one downside, it would be the bagel. It was on the chewy side and a little too flat, lacking that soft yet slightly crisp texture I had hoped for. My friend ordered the Power Oats, and with a drizzle of honey, they turned out to be a hearty and satisfying choice. The hot cocoa I had was rich but not overly sweet, which some people might love, though I personally prefer a touch more sugar. My friend's drip coffee was decent, not exceptional but still enjoyable. All in all, it was a wonderful experience in a charming spot with great food and a thoughtful menu. I would definitely come back and try more.

Steampunk room but the coffee stay serious: single-origin espressos pull dense and even, flat white carries gentle sweetness, and the cold brew runs tea-bright, no murk. Croissants shatter clean, almond is best. Baristas explain origins without lecture. Wi-Fi steady, outlets plenty. Lines look fierce at 10, but queue slides fast, staff are smiley.

This coffee shop embodies a unique atmosphere enhanced by a welcoming staff! They offer a selection of exceptional coffee beans and specialty coffees. Additionally, their pastries are delightful, and the kitchen serves remarkable dishes. I savored the avocado toast with salmon, which was truly delicious. The plain croissant was also a wonderful treat. Their beans from Rwanda are extraordinary, boasting a remarkable taste that is hard to find elsewhere. We left with over a kilogram to bring that joy home with us😍

I have been coming to Truth Coffee for many years (even before the Best Coffee in the World title), and I have to commend them for consistency. Consistency in coffee, food and most importantly, service. I had the bacon and 3 cheese sandwich which was just delicious! It was this perfect mix of savory, salty and a tad sweet. Coffee was perfectly balanced and no, you really don’t need to add sugar. My friend and I were very happy all around. I only wish the lighting was 20% brighter. I get the whole steam punk thing, but it’s a bit too dark for us 40+ spectacle wearers ;)
