"Dreaming of chasing fresh, untrammeled powder? Then Tsaina Lodge, widely regarded as the birthplace of the Alaskan freeskiing scene, is for you. Its location on Thompson Pass, a gap in the Chugach Mountains known for its record-setting snowfalls (averaging over 700 inches a year), and dramatic slopes combine for epic heli-ski exploits on runs that average a steep 3,500 feet. Come summer, the repertoire of helicopter-assisted adventure excursions widens: Fly out to fish, hike, or glacier trek the seemingly limitless surroundings. Après-activity luxuries await back at the lodge, which is situated on the grounds of what had once been an avalanche-safe roadhouse, built in 1949. The dilapidated building was bulldozed and rebuilt in 2012, and the result is a boutique hotel that stands out for its modern, contemporary design. Floor-to-ceiling windows look out onto either glacier or forest from each of the 24 rooms, and there’s a gym, yoga space, and spa—along witha fine-dining restaurant with a focus on local seafood, meat, and game, and the reopened Tsaina Bar, legendary among early freeskiiers."

This Ski Lodge in Backcountry Alaska Wants to Teach You to Heli-Ski

"Tsaina Lodge, the birthplace of the Alaskan free-skiing scene, is the legendary heli-skiing base on Thompson Pass in the Chugach Mountains—the snowiest place in Alaska. In 2011, it was purchased and restored by Jeff Fraser, a former tech exec and longtime VHSG client. The once-decrepit inn, a former oil-trucker roadhouse, now has 24 comfortable rooms with a fantastic lounge and bar, appealing to a new generation of skiers."

BIZARRE EXPERIENCE. A group of friends and I went to tsaina lodge for dinner after skiing all day on the pass. After we pulled up I hung back at the car to get out of my snowboard boots while everyone walked in and was seated. I ran up the stairs and headed in to meet my group and was stopped and told I couldn't come in! I told the door man my friends just walked in and I can see them sitting down. He said sorry we can't help you. I asked him why and he said "you understand" patted me on the back and walked me out. Still confused I was trying to get my friends attention. They had drinks now. At -17 degrees I ended up hitch hiking to valdez. I guess if your not a heli skiing client, super wealthy or wearing a neon colored one piece norrona ski suit they are not interested in serving you. Just be prepared to be turned away for literally no reason. It was really hurtful and I'll never return. Response to owner reply: This did happen a few years ago. It was your first season. I don't typically write reviews but I woke up from a dead sleep having a nightmare about it and that's when I decided to write it down and then review. The doorman was a short small framed man with a Britsh accent. This absolutely did happen. It has caused me to avoid going out to eat in general at any unfamiliar restaurants.

I stayed here in fall 2018. Guests should accept that it is in a remote location and the hotel does an excellent job of overcoming the hurdles. I had a gorgeous room that met the family requirements. Great services available and they had a power generation issue at the time and accommodated all guests at arguably the best lodging in Valdez. I wasn't a Heli skier and the business is focuses on those patrons. I don't think they're catering to other adventure communities, regardless my stay was excellent.

My husband and I stayed at the lodge for 3 nights and had a gorgeous view of Worthington glacier out our window. We sprung for a room with 2 beds after reading other reviews and are glad we did. We wished we’d asked for the top floor as sound carried throughout the lodge at all hours, especially the footsteps of the person staying above us. Staff at the front desk and bar were friendly and responsive to one problem we had with the room, which we mentioned in the morning and was addressed before we returned that afternoon. We made use of the laundry facilities, which were nice to have in the middle of our trip.

My family and I found this spot after making a last minute decision to take a three-day trip down to Valdez while visiting family in Fairbanks in th summer. Firstly, the lodge could not be in a more beautiful location. Views of the Worthington Glacier from your balcony? Fine by me. Secondly, for only being their second summer open, they nailed it. Beds were comfortable and bathrooms were nice. Really convenient having soaps and shampoos at the ready (and they didn’t suck). Staff were excellent, especially the servers in the restaurant. And the food was not bad at all. The breakfast was delicious and drinks were relatively inexpensive. Great beer list and such a comfortable lodge-like feel in the lobby/restaurant area. Highly recommend this spot if you’re taking a trip down to Valdez! Gorgeous drive from Tsaina by the Worthington Glacier, through Thompson Pass then through Keystone Canyon. Spectacular!

My wife and I stayed in Tsaina Lodge during our Valdez visit. It is set at the end of a mountain valley along the Richardson highway, about 35 miles from Valdez. The view of the area is gorgeous. A direct view of Worthington Glacier, just 8 miles away, is seen from the lobby, no better setting in the area, and in fact this hotel is the only building around for miles!||||Rooms are small but beds are comfortable, and the Internet worked fine. No TVs in the room. The lounge area had one. You honestly won’t need TV while outside so much, exploring the area. ||||The hotel had some nice add-ons. A free laundry room with modern washers and dryers to use as needed, plus laundry detergent is provided. Unfortunately this room was next door to our room. This added some occasional noise, as did the fact we were on the first floor of a two story building, which causes some footsteps to be heard. I always try to get on top floors of this type hotel for this reason, but no rooms were available.||||Coffee is also gratis in the bar area. The restaurant has good food and the people working at the hotel are friendly and helpful.||||Can’t think there is a better place to stay in the Valdez area than Tsaina Lodge. Unless, of course, you need to stay in the town itself. We didn’t miss that since the drive down to Valdez, via Thompson Pass and Keystone canyon, may be the most spectacular drive in Alaska, if not the world! This made staying at Tsaina Lodge all the more worth it, IMO.

A jewel on the middle of nowhere! We came in very late after kitchen was closed but they reopened for us! Very cozy restaurant. And our room was awesome: mattresses were very comfortable, bathroom equipped with modern fixtures, plus unbelievable view from the balcony really made our stay great. We are definitely coming back. ❤❤❤

I must take time to describe our impressions of this most unique Lodge located 35 mi North of Valdez in The Alaska Range of mountains in what is called the Thompson Pass on the Richardson Hwy. Thompson Pass is a 2,805 foot-high gap in the Chugach Mountains northeast of Valdez, Alaska. It is the snowiest place in Alaska in winter. ||Contemporary styled rooms with queen size Tempur-pedic mattress beds, private bath, luxury linens and luxury turkish towels, deluxe duvet, shower amenities, panoramic forest view and high speed wifi.||The Lodge features not only stunning views from our rooms, but offers a full service bar and excellent restaurant, and large rustic fireplace with comfy oversized soft leather sofas and colorful throws to use. Food and service top notch!||ROOMS: Although well appointed, Our room was small with queen size bed filling most of space, mounted on a platform that extends past the mattress. This was a hazard to human shins if not careful when rounding the corner of the bed! The mattress is a Tempur-pedic, very comfortable – good sleeping! Very European in design, with half-glass shower stall, elegant sink & faucets, small glass shelf under mirror. No closets, but small niche with shelf and hangers next to bathroom sink. No chair. Small bedside table with drawers. We used the window sill for our devices. Thankfully we brought a plug extention to use, there were not enough outlets for our chargers. (There may be larger rooms available with seating in them, so you should ask when booking. No mic or fridge, which was expected with a restaurant on site. The staff is young, friendly and helpful at all times, and have small cabins in woods nearby for their use when not on duty.|| In spite of these small inconveniences, we really enjoyed our stay. We were there to visit Valdez and go on Stan Stephens Columbia Glacier cruise (I will review it also) - we had a wonderful time in this area!

This place overall to me looks like they were forced to open and still was unfinished. Let me explain. The location is in the middle of nowhere but the view is very pleasant. You get free laundry with library and a fitness room that is equipped with 2 bikes but no treadmills... Rooms are very smalls and you can see tv plugs.. but no tvs... The common area is a beautiful mountain lodge and you can tell that the renovation was done beautifully. For the price you pay (250$+/night) you have to pay for breakfast and nothing else is included (except free parking). Reception is open up to 10. No elevators. Dinner is good even if selection is limited.
