We stayed here 3 nights because of the snow while walking around Japan and it was absolutely wonderful! Kindness of the owner Ichi-san, the best location right in the center of the town of Unzen (1min to Jigoku) and a cozy friendly atmosphere with the lowest price in town made our stay unforgettable❤️♪

What a special spot! Ichi and Hannah make you feel like a part of the family and help to break the ice between travellers. Very accommodating, Ichi had great recommendations and on a stormy windy day brought out games to entertain us and even showed us how to do a little calligraphy! If you are thinking of visiting the area you have found the spot! Staying comes with free onsen vouchers as well.

We had an amazing time!!! The atmosphere is so lovely here because the host is very welcoming, relaxed and fun to hang out with! We also hiked to Mount Fugen and to the volcano. If we're ever in Unzen again, we will definitely come back to Tsudoi guesthouse! :)

We had a very interesting experience getting to this hotel. Our original plan was to travel on the ferry from Kumamoto to Shimabara, then take a bus from Shimabara to Unzen. There was a typhoon, and both ferries were cancelled. We then had to take the JR trains around the coast of the Ariake Sea to Isahaya. The last bus to Shimabara was at 6:16pm, and we just missed it, so we took the train on the private Shimabara Railway to Shimabara Station. The last bus from Shimabara to Unzen was at 7:15pm, and we ended up just missing this one also. We ended up taking a taxi for 6,000 yen to Tsudoi Guest House, which was easily found as it is located in the main square opposite the main tori gate and next to the bus station.||||The hotel was clean and comfortable. Accommodation was in bunk beds, which is probably more suited to a backpacker. There was a shared bathroom, toilet and shower which were impeccably clean. The beds were small but comfortable. The property had wifi and had a f&b area in the lobby which provided a good breakfast of ham sandwiches and orange juice for 500 yen.||||We planned to hike to Mounr Unzen, and the hotel assisted in making a reservation on a shared taxi, and also provided the bus shedule for return to Shimabara. The property is ideally located within walking distance of all the main attractions in Unzen. A hot spring pass is also provided once checked in,and a walking map of the area. The rooms were reasonably priced, and we though good value for money.

A fantastic location in the sleepy town of Unzen. Situated 500 metres from Unzen Hells which everyone wants to see. This is a very cozy guesthouse, almost like it was someone's house and during my stay, all the guests were very friendly. I was in need to buy cigarettes and the owner actually came out with me and guided me to a store that sold them! Fantastic customer service. 🙂 The rooms are bunk bed capsule style. Since everyone is next to each other, you can hear people snoring or packing their bags next to you. You also need to make the bed yourself which can be annoying. Pro tip: Bring your own towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other washroom amenities because they don't have any! You may also receive a free voucher to the nearby onsen, but also bring your own washroom amenities for that as well as it is just a sentou style bathhouse with onsen water flowing into it.

The place was newly openend at the end of 2016 and is therefore in a perfect condition. The dorm is clean, spacious and well equipped. The restaurant in the first floor is small and cozy and serves delicious food, also many western dishes like spaghetti carbonnara. The staff is super friendly and helps with providing information on nearby activities (Mount Kinugasa, Mount Unzen, Unzen Hell, Onsen). In the price included you will get three tickets for public onsen. Overall a fantastic place to enjoy unzen.

This is new and so they are so enthusiastic to please the guests. It is quite small and a dormitory style with 2 toilets and shower but they have tickets to allow you to use other large hot springs in other places in Unzen township. It is the closest place to the bus stop so right in the centre and by the entrance to the Hellish sulphur cliffs and also the other sites and also eating establishments. They are a bar and cafe also so everything is at your doorstep so to speak. Just a note: they do not provide towels, toothbrush and shavers like Ryokans do so be prepared to bring your own.
