Tsumugi Café – A Peaceful and Delicious Escape in the Heart of Tsukiji, Tokyo 🇯🇵☕ Tsumugi Café in the Tsukiji area is one of those places that immediately makes you feel at ease. It blends traditional Japanese charm with a modern, minimalist atmosphere, creating the perfect setting for a relaxing break in one of Tokyo’s most energetic districts. The moment you walk in, the warm lighting, calm music, and attentive staff set the tone for a truly enjoyable experience. What makes Tsumugi Café stand out is the exceptional quality of its food and drinks. The coffee is smooth and fragrant, prepared with great care, and easily comparable to the best specialty cafés in Tokyo. Their selection of Japanese-style desserts and small dishes feels both authentic and refined, beautifully presented and full of delicate flavours that highlight the essence of Japanese culinary tradition. Whether you choose a matcha-based treat, a seasonal cake, or one of their signature sets, everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully crafted. The café is also an ideal stop for travellers exploring the Tsukiji area. Despite being close to the lively market streets, Tsumugi offers a peaceful atmosphere where you can sit back, recharge, and enjoy high-quality food away from the crowds. The attention to detail, from the plating to the service, reflects the Japanese dedication to hospitality. A visit to Tsumugi Café is a moment of calm, flavour, and genuine Tokyo charm. If you’re in Tsukiji and want a place where tradition meets comfort, this café is absolutely worth a stop — a memorable experience you’ll be happy to return to on your next trip to Tokyo.

Quaint small cafe with proper Japanese breakfast. Only 2 choices when we were there. Congee (savoury porridge) with 16 types of topping, or a piece of salmon with mixed grain rice (it looks like Korean mixed rice - purple coloured). We had the salmon and it was sublime. Be careful of the cut of the salmon as it may have a few bones.

Located on the temple grounds with the information center lies this restaurant that does an amazing 18 item breakfast that has daily queues. While each individual item is small, it's overall a filling breakfast once you get through it all. Every dish has its own flavour, though we felt some items were a bit too salty. Each set was 2000 yen which seemed fair for what we got and where it was.

Got table 18 for the 18 breakfast! We made a tourist mistake a rocked up at 10:30am with no reservation and guess what, it was sold out 🥲 But luckily they allow (at least when we were there) to make a reservation for the next day! It was amazing to see it within the temple grounds. Returned the next day and heaps of people were just waiting but with a reservation we just strolled in, sat and ordered our 18 set meal. Definitely an experience to have a range of Japanese breakfast items to taste in a cafe style but to me its a once and done as while well cooked and presented, wasn’t a fan of everyone of the 18 meals. More of a photo op experience with a focus on food variety.

We came here during lunch time and had to wait for around 20 mins. They used a self-service machine to get the queue numbers. The foods were great and were beautifully plated. The ambience was nice and peaceful. This place was very close to the Tsukiji Market.

We came here on a Thursday morning and there was no line, we were able to get a table quickly without a reservation. The 18 course breakfast was good, it was nice sampling a variety of dishes, although I was not a fan of some of them. The standout dishes were: - yuba with salmon roe - sweet kombu tsukudani - matcha jelly - fried eggplant with seasonal ground soy meat - spicy cod roe & seaweed - roasted duck with sansho pepper - deep fried fish cake Overall, Tsumugi was a great option for breakfast and we had a good time trying the variety of dishes. I would recommend them if you're interested in trying the 18 course breakfast. follow @food.vince on instagram and tiktok for more travel eats!

Important to know: If u dont have a reservation, then you’ll have to wait quite long of a que (around 1hour). And if you make it, as i did, high chance the 18-course breakfast set is sold out. If i knew it could sell out, i would not wait for 1 hour… That made it such a bad experience, especially because it was my last day in tokyo. Update: After renouncing on that, ate something else and 20’ later many of those 18-dish breakfast started being served for the new customers… I asked why, and they told me because they have cancelled and that’s why they had availability. Although they didn’t cancel one, there were at least 20 served… they told me i had bad timing. Disappointing :(

We got a brunch menu. Food was great and reasonably priced for what they offer. Cute place with aesthetic, relaxing atmosphere. One thing to note is make a reservation beforehand or go early. Otherwise you might have to wait for a long time because even with a bunch of empty tables, they take guests with reservations first.

Yelp
They have a practical ticketing system if you don't have a reservation. We came here for dessert after lunch at a place in the Tsujiki outer market. The shaved ice was perfect for dessert. We had grape and the matcha. The grape is quite sweet a bit like grape Hi-Chew. The matcha with adzuki bean shaved ice was perfect.

Yelp
This cafe is a great place to grab lunch or breakfast instead of Tsukiji market, which is now a lot more crowded and busy. There is often a line, so you take a ticket and wait for your number to be called. If you don't have a reservation (I don't know how to make one btw) I recommend coming at about 9:30am because the breakfast items look more unique and breakfast ends at 11am. We ended up getting lunch because we came a little too late but the food was good. I got the ochazuke set for about 1500 yen. The mackerel set cost about 1400 yen. You order through QR code which has a Japanese menu that can be translated into English and pay at the cashier. So convenient, delicious, and affordable!

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place when we were on our way to Tsukiji Outer Market. Tsumugi is next to Tsukiji Hongan-Ji Temple and Tsukiji Station. This place looks very modern next to the temple and has a sign name on the building for "Cafe." Their hours are from 8:00am to 6:00pm where last seating is at 5:00pm. There is an English menu with pictures on the table. You can order by the QR code provided, but since everything was in Japanese, we have difficulty ordering through it. Our waitress took our orders instead. (I am not sure the actual names of these dishes, I did not take a picture of the menu since it was like a book and there were a lot of pages.) Fried chicken set: Amazing must-have dish. There are 4 pieces of fried chicken with basil mayo tartar sauce on top. This set also include side dishes, miso soup, and a rice bowl where you can choose multigrain rice or white rice with furikake. The chicken was so thick and juicy. It was the best fried chicken ever and the basil mayo sauce just enhance its flavor more. Super delicious. Hamburger steak set: Another amazing dish. The hamburger was so tender, thick, and juicy. It was unbelievably good. Best hamburger steak ever. Their demi-glaze sauce was subtle but still made the hamburger super flavorful. This set also include side dishes, miso soup, and a rice bowl. Basil pasta with shrimp and avocado: This dish was a miss. The pasta sauce is mainly basil and olive oil combined. It was very flavorless even when we added the yuzu sauce on the side. The shrimp was tiny and there were only 3 pieces. This was more like a healthy and light dish. I wouldn't recommend this dish especially when there are so much others to try. Mini parfait: We tried this mini parfait (pretty sure this is not the actual name) which includes a scoop of green tea ice cream, red bean, mochi balls, clear jelly, and whipped cream. The green tea ice cream is fantastic. The red bean was fresh. The whole dessert was so good mixed together. Sweet potato dessert: We also tried this sweet potato dessert that was featured first page on their menu. This dessert includes a scoop of what I believe is vanilla ice cream with some cookie dough in it. One whole baked sweet potato, mochi, red bean, crispy thin corn flakes, and a side of sour plum strips and hot soy milk. Pour the soy milk into the bowl and it absolute heaven. It tasted like cereal with the corn flakes but sweet with the ice cream. It was just overall a warming and good dessert. Iced green tea: Fresh green tea flavor. It's not sweetened but this drink is very refreshing. You can choose this drink as an add-on each set. Iced coffee: You need to request for the cream and sugar. This was a good ice coffee. Overall, definitely one of our favorites places to dine-in in Tokyo. We tried this place twice in the past couple of days since my family liked it so much. The service was great and friendly. The employees don't speak English well, but the menu with pictures helps a lot. There is a bit of a wait during peak lunch hour.

Yelp
Got here at 7:50 am on a Tuesday in mid-May 2023 and got in the first round at when they opened at 8 am. 10 minutes later and that might not have been the case. Got the 18 dish meal, and it came with a choice of either hot or cold. We got the hot tea, but we think if we had got the cold tea that they might have offered refills like they did for the table next to us. All the dishes were great except the pickled plum. It looked light, but to my surprise, I was actually perfectly filled up after eating (after eating half of my companion's porridge after I devoured mine), and it somewhat spoiled my appetite/plans for follow-on eating at Tsukiji outer market. Totally worth it. Would go again to bring friends/family if I could.

Yelp
Saw this place on social media and I'm glad we came. We made a 8AM reservation for breakfast on a Sundya so we could enjoy the 18 course traditional set. I'm glad we made the reservation because we were able to walk in and get seated immediately, whereas if you didn't have a reservation you had to wait in line. This was during peak sakura season in 2023. The 18 course breakfast was a cool way to try everything. It comes with hot or iced tea, a bowl of miso soup, a bowl of congee, and 18 small dishes. We made the mistake of trying to guess what each dish was, but then after we were finished we learned that you can lift the small plate and it tells you what it was. If you don't want to try the 18 course, there are 2 other options of grilled fish and egg I believe. I would recommend this place if you're planning to go to the fish market since it's really close by. The cafe also serves desserts later in the day and the ambiance is very bright and clean so it would be a great place to rest for a bit.

Yelp
I got there a little too late for the 18 dish Japanese breakfast but I loved everything we ended up getting. The mackerel set and grilled salmon bowl were both yummy. I can't wait to go back to try the special breakfast. The online ordering system at your table with your mobile device is a little confusing but we were able to grab a waitress to take our order the old fashion way.

Yelp
We woke up early to try the famous 18-dish breakfast. You can make reservations by phone, but possibly because it was over the weekend, it was already full. You can still walk in, though, so we went around 8:30am and put our names down. You can check your place in line online, so we went to see the Tsukiji Honganji while we waited. We were told it'd be an hour wait, but it ended up only being 30 minutes. The cafe is inside their information center, which has floor-to-ceiling windows, so you have a nice view of the Tsukiji Honganji. The 18-dish breakfast was so ascetically pleasing and just as delicious. I love that you can try so many little dishes. On the tray underneath each dish, they indicate what each dish is in Japanese. Everything was flavorful and we had seconds of the porridge, which is complimentary. The set also comes with miso soup and green tea. For 1,800 yen, this breakfast is definitely worth trying if you enjoy trying different dishes and flavors. They have a limited number of this breakfast and it was sold out by the time we were leaving last 10:00am. They also had a wider menu for lunch and dessert, which I hope to try next time :)

Yelp
Short wait for us without a reservation at 830am on a Tuesday. Not too filling 18 item congee and grilled salmon breakfast keeps you energized and not sluggish for the day's adventures.

Yelp
This review is so late!! I thought I had reviewed this restaurant soon after eating there, but, apparently, I hadn't. Luckily, I still have the notes I took regarding my trip to Japan in 2019. I had the 18-course breakfast and loved it! There were so many items to try and everything was tasty. It gave me a sampling of so many dishes; there was tamago, fish, pickled items such as takuan and ume, beans, miso soup, fruit, tofu, and a great bowl of plain congee to go with everything. What a fantastic way to try a bit of everything! My husband opted to just order grilled fish and egg for breakfast and he enjoyed his breakfast, too, even though it wasn't nearly as picturesque! Tsumugi is on the temple grounds of the Hongwanji Temple and they have a limited number of the 18-course breakfast each day, so if you're really interested, you should get there earlier rather than later!

Yelp
We came upon this cafe in april of 2018 while wandering around the tsukiji hongan temple. It was a cute cafe that had an interesting mix of traditional and modern menu items. We ordered the matcha latte and also the intimidating looking 18 hinmoku no asagohan. The latter order was 18 small dishes! Unfortunately I don't remember what was in each dish but I remember enjoying it overall. If anything, it makes for an interesting food pic I would recommend checking this place out if you're around the tsukiji area. It's worth a look!
