On the Grid : Dumpling House

"Entry number two of our studios dumpling battle is Mother’s Dumplings.Dumpling house is a fairly small family run asian restaurant just north of Dundas on the West side of Spadina known for their pan fried and boiled dumplings. A great stop over while you’re exploring the bottom half of Chinatown." - Tennis

Wow. Absolutely positively delicious. Top knotch Chinese food and I can't wait to go back for more. The dumplings are incredible and don't miss out on the braised beef noodle soup.... Again WOW. Really really great food without treking downtown or north of the city. Lucky to have this amazing Asian cuisine here in the Junction.

Google
Absolutely delicious authentic dumplings for a great price. They have vegetarian and gluten-free options! Great spot for a quick lunch. Definitely recommend the steamed cuttlefish dumplings.

Google
A hidden gem Chinese restaurant here! Awesome food, and I particularly recommend fried dumplings, which have a thin layer covering the dumplings, which itself tastes so crispy and good. Prices are reasonable, and service and atmosphere are good as well. The owner, likely a accomplished artist, told us that he drew some portraits during the lock-down period (from pandemic) and hanged them on the wall, which look really interesting as one can tell portraits are really livid. I will be sharing some of them shortly, from my phone.

Came here for the gluten free dumplings people raved about. Got pork and vegetarian. The dough was a little crumbly, which made them a little tough to eat, but I still loved the ability to have something gluten free that normally isn't! I was hoping there might be more options on the menu for gluten free items, but that was all I saw (and essentially what I came for). If I were not allergic to broccoli, I would have tried the beef and broccoli, which I was told could be made gluten free.

I took the time to write this review because it is important the owner know about this. I ordered fried rice with a mix of seafood. It had to be the worst I ever had. The seafood mix came from a frozen bag, I could tell by the chewysiness and almost raw texture of the pieces. There was no attempt to make the dish more palatable by adding some flavors. Unfortunately, it was a takeaway, so I couldn't return it. If it had been at the restaurant, I would have asked to take it back after the first bite. It wasn't cheap either. The overall impression I got from this place was to make profit by preparing cheap meals.

Google
Absolutely wonderful visit to Tumi Dumpling House. Among our group, we tried 7 different items, including vegan, vegetarian, and meat options. All the dishes we had were very delicious. Particularly excellent dishes were the scallion pancakes, General Tso's chicken, and the pan-fried vegan dumplings. We had lunch on a Sunday, and there was a steady stream of take-out and delivery orders going out while we dined. Very popular! Highly recommended.

We are loyal food app delivery patrons of Tumi and have actually never dined onsite. We just love the convenience of being able to bulk order delicious food and having generous leftovers for several meals. Our absolute menu favourites are xiao long bao (the best of the dumplings selection!), wonton soup, sweet and sour fish fillet, mapo tofu, fried noodles with shrimp and Yangzhou fried rice. These are our consistent order staples every single time. We just recently tried the pa-fried bao of pork filling and sautéed beef with mushrooms and it was delectable; definitely adding to our usual rotation. Our orders are always neatly packaged and we especially love the high quality of the food; it really tastes authentic and flavourful. We are so glad to have Tumi in our neighbourhood, highly recommended!

Google
Bright, clean, friendly staff (and owner who we chatted a bit after), fair priced menu with high quality dumplings. We ordered the pan fried vegan and chicken dumplings, and the pork bao, more than enough for two, more like food for 3 or 4. Great portions! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Visited Tumi for the first time recently but it certainly won't be the last! The restaurant ambience is very cozy and it feels local and family-run. Me and my husband visited on a weekday night but it was packed. We were thankfully able to snag a table though. The dumplings, the star of the show, are absolutely delicious. I ordered the xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and the pan fried chicken dumplings. You can pan fry any of the dumplings for an extra $1 which is the option we chose. Both dumplings were equally delicious. They came in great portions and were filling. I enjoyed the way they pan fried their dumplings - it made them a lot crispier. We also ordered the Chinese scallion pancakes which was just okay to me (it tasted a bit plain to me and I felt it needed more scallion filling) but the hubby adored it so it's likely a personal taste thing! I go wild with my dipping s for dumplings so I dip in soy sauce, vinegar and chili oil lol. It does feel like they cater to folks who can't handle a lot of spice because their chili oil had barely any kick to it. One thing I'd like is spicier chili oil! Otherwise, amazing dumplings, cute place, definitely recommend going!

Yelp
I live in the neighbourhood, so I walk by the restaurant all the time. Finally, my friend and I I decided to try it out. I am not a big fan of dumplings so I opted for a noodle dish with shrimp. Simple enough you would think. It arrived after a bit of wait. But, I figured all good things take time. Well, apparently not. It was soggy, the shrimps were tiny and it tasted as bad as it looked. Ok, I figured I will give them another chance. I ordered general Tsao's chicken the next time. Sadly, it did not measure up this time either. The taste was not there. Would not recommend. I will not be coming again.

Yelp
Authentic food and wonderful friendly service. I didn't expect to find such amazing gluten free dumplings! The mapo tofu was excellent. This restaurant is a keeper!

Yelp
We decided to check out Tumi Dumpling House as they're one of the first Northern Chinese spots to offer gluten free dumplings. It's a few doors down from Full Stop Coffee. We dropped in on a Thursday (around 8:15pm). Service was decent and our waitress checked on us several times. The menu is split into appetizers, dumplings, noodles, rice, main dishes and bings. There's $13.00 lunch special (12:00pm to 3:00pm). - Gluten free pork dumplings ($15.00 for 10) - we opted for pan fried ($1.00 extra). The texture was good but didn't develop much of a dumpling lace. The filling (ground pork and cabbage) fell flat. - Singapore fried vermicelli ($16.00) - good wok hei. Decent portion size. Would try the XLB's next time at TDH. 3.5 stars.

Yelp
Delightful restaurant with friendly service and yummy food. Loved the XLB and the carrot and lamb dumplings. Kids loved the beef "burrito" bing and the green onion pancake.

Yelp
Was in the neighbourhood so I popped by to get an order of the vegan dumplings. They are made fresh and are super delicious. The people working inside were very gracious and kind. I added a little touch of soy sauce to them when I got home because I am a salt addict, O L but the chilli oil that I was sent home with was also delicious! We would definitely order again.

Yelp
As a Xiao Long Bao (XLB) enthusiast, I have known this place as one of the few places that serve XLB in the west GTA. I finally had a chance to try it today. The XLB is sophisticated - thin skin is beautifully pleated, with the right amount of soup - the flavor was not too strong, not too blunt. Tasty for sure! But somehow lacking the distinct seasoning that other famous XLB places have (like Ding Tai Fung etc). Yet, this XLB is worth a try! Had Sheng Jian Bao - The wrapper was fluffy yeast dough with crispy bottom (by frying) and decent minced pork & spring onion flavor - but again, lacked the distinct seasonings I personally wanted. Yet, it is worth a try. The texture was perfect!

Yelp
So happy we found Tumi Dumpling - we really needed a dumpling house near our neighborhood. We had the cold ear mushroom, scallion pancakes, xiao long bao & the pork & chive dumplings. All tasted yummy & we wished we could have squeezed in the red bean paste pancakes for dessert. The owners are so nice & for sure, we'll be back, with friends so we can try even more stuff. It's an extensive menu.

Yelp
Really delicious and fast service! The wonton dumplings were so good I ended up ordering them delivery a few days later.

Yelp
Stumbled on this place while walking along Dundas last weekend. We already had plans for dinner so decided to order from here last night. Ordered through Door Dash so didn't interact with the staff or go into the restaurant; however, I can definitely comment on the food. Even though it's called Dumpling House, they have other items on their menu. As a starter, we ordered the Green Onion Pancake and Cucumber Salad. The pancake was good, but lacking in flavour. They could have included more green onion as well. The cucumber salad, though, was quite tasty. Marinated in their house vinaigrette, it was refreshing. I would definitely order it again. Our mains were the Bao Dumplings, House Fried Rice, and Kung Pao Chicken. The dumplings were good and juicy with a lot of filling. We thought that they would taste even better with sriracha sauce. The House Fried Rice was filled with ingredients, which went well with our meal. The Kung Pao Chicken was good too; maybe a little less onions and more meat though. Overall, I liked this place and wouldn't mind ordering from them again. Good for: Chinese Food

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of eating at Tumi's twice now within the span of a week. It's not quite close by, but having stumbled upon it once, I knew I had to come back with my partner. Everything about this restaurant is great, from the spacious interior, to the outstanding staff and service, to Chinese food which is frankly hard to beat. The woman that served me was the same both times. I didn't catch her name, but she was exceedingly friendly and helpful. I've now tried the lamb dumplings, seafood/pork dumplings, beef noodle soup, cucumber salad, and the wonton soup. Fresh is the word here. You can tell everything is made with quality ingredients, which means that nothing is over salted or masked. The cucumber salad I could eat forever - extremely garlicky and fresh, there's nothing better. The dumplings are perfect. The shell to filling ratio is ideal, offering a bit of chew without feeling too thick. The interior bursts (literally, in the case of the lamb) with juices and meaty filling. A nice touch, they also serve baiju, which I haven't seen in a lot of places! Definitely make your way to Tumi. If you love Chinese food, this is a must try.

Yelp
Did a UberEats here, the dumplings were really good, especially liked the Xiao Long Bao.

Yelp
I just ordered from this place on DoorDash and will definitely do so again. We splurged and ordered a few (a lot of) items. All of them were superb! Here's what we got: Steamed lamb and carrot dumplings: you could taste both the lamb and carrot in these little gems. They were simple and delicious. Wonton with red chilli sauce: these were fairly standard (and we enjoyed them) but I could have used a bit more spice. Fried noodle with chicken and mixed vegetables: the noodles were soft and flavourful. There was a lovely smokiness that permeated the dish from wok frying. Sautéed lamb with scallion: the scallion was actually onion but we still liked the dish. By itself it wasn't as flavourful as some of the other dishes but I still really enjoyed it especially when mixed with the peppers from our spicy chicken dish. Spicy chicken: by far our favourite dish. The chicken and peppers were both fried - crispy and spicy and wonderful. Neither of us could stop snacking on the peppers - they were just so good! Pan fried bao of pork filling: soft and chewy and crisp and juicy. This was delightful! We will have leftovers for days (not that I'm complaining)

Yelp
Visited Tumi Dumpling House and was overall very happy and satisfied. I arrived at about 9pm and realized they closed at 930pm they still took my order without any issues and I confirmed the kitchen had no issues too. I ordered the general Tso chicken, sautéed garlic broccoli, pan fried vegetable dumplings and pan fried chicken dumplings. Everything was seasoned well and extremely tasty. My only feedback is on my end and that's note the entrees do not come with rice and that's extra. I realized this after making it home and they were closed but my meal was still great. Highly recommend Tumi.

Yelp
Ok where do we start with this train wreck of a meal I got from door dash . I am giving it 2 stars only because of the packaging . The pork bun was mediocre , the spicy chicken lacked anything , I truly mean that , zero flavour . Rice bland as hospital cafeteria rice pilaf . Cucumber salad was actually ok . We will not be ordering from here again . Thank god my gf and I had champnge and her for dessert to make the evening great

Yelp
Was looking for lunch close to where I was shopping and found this little gem. Ordered a lunch special and pan-fried dumplings...everything was so tasty...portions are good. Tried but just couldn't finish it all. Service was spot on and friendly. So many great offerings on their menu...will definitely be back for more.

Yelp
Very yummy! The spicey noodles are very spicey. The vegetarian dumplings are best fried.

Yelp
A brand new dumpling house in the Junction? Yes, yes, YES! I have to hand it to these lovely people, who opened their restaurant for business in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. I first walked past a few days ago and noticed that they had a spread of carefully folded take out menus packaged in individual clear plastic sleeves on a table just outside the door. I grabbed one and took it home, then after looking at the interesting array of menu items, I called to place an order. In the space of a few days, I have ordered from them twice now. The food is absolutely delicious - truly authentic northern Chinese selections made with wholesome, quality ingredients (yay Sichuan peppercorns and doubanjiang!) The dumplings are explosive and fresh, the rice and noodle dishes are scrumptious, and the portions are huge for the price! Finally, the man that works there is SO friendly and kind. The space is spotless and well-organized for clean, touch-free take out. Please support this burgeoning restaurant! Their food is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. If you are a fan of real Chinese home cooking, it will not disappoint!

Yelp
We have always wished for an authentic Chinese restaurant to open in the Junction, and after all these years are wishes have finally been granted! We tried Tumi tonight for the first time on their street side patio. The service was amazing (reserved our table when we called ahead, disinfected our table and highchair on arrival. The owners are so friendly, and really hats off to them for surviving through the pandemic. We ordered the braised beef noodle soup, a classic northern staple, and it was one of the best I've had (better than Asian Legend IMO!), pork and shrimp dumplings (delicious and hearty), sweet and sour fish, seafood fried rice, and their beef 'burritos'. Everything came in large portions, so we brought home leftovers. The ingredients were fresh and everything was done perfectly. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
The best Tibeten dumplings in Toronto by a country mile I get the meatlovers special steamed then fried.... Handmade and soooo good! Crisco

J L.

Yelp
Great to have this new place in the Junction! To have a great day, order the Bao - it is a round dumpling filled with meat and has an awesome crispy underside. Best I have had and very addictive. Comes in orders of 6. For our crew of five we get 2 orders of Bao, Kung pao chicken, noodles with vegetables and broccoli. Everything is nicely seasoned and tastes fresh. Or we get bao and a ton of dumplings. We order online and pick up no problem. Let's support our local restaurants!

Yelp
I've only had the cabbage and pork dumplings but so delicious. The dumpling are made by hand in house. I can't wait to try more on the menu.

Yelp
I worked hard to write a long review for this place a couple months ago, but Yelp deleted it for some reason and I don't feel like writing a whole new one, but the gist is that Tumi is great.

Michael D.

Yelp
Wow! First time here and we loved it! The cucumber salad and dumplings were fresh and delicious! Our busy waiter provided great and friendly service. Clean and beautiful restaurant and patio too. Will definitely come again.

Yelp
Really awesome Sichuan place in the Junction with exceptionally good food. We had the cumin lamb, the sichuan fish in broth, the shredded taiwanes pancake, the wood ear mushroom salad and the stir fried cabbage. All were excellent and reasonably priced. We'll be going back soon!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Only open for take out for the time being, but the limited menu is an excellent variety of dumplings, soups, spicy stir frys, fried rice dishes and Chinese pancakes. NOT your average Canadian/Chinese restaurant.

Ireena V.

Yelp
Pan fried pork and cabbage dumplings were perfectly delicious! Would definitely go back for that. Kung pao chicken was also great with rice. I dropped a star because I also ordered the wonton soup appetizer - wontons were yummy but the broth was bland like water.
